Blencathra – Cumbria
- Shepherd's hut for 4
The Blencathra camp at Scales Plantation is made up of a beautiful handcrafted Shepherd's hut, a wooden kitchen and bathroom shelter and a compost loo, all in a clearing on the edge of the woods with views over the North Lake fells. Simple wooden furniture gives the hut a traditional
rustic feel, yet it's extremely comfortable. The double bed and bunks have feather down duvets and blankets to sink into and sheepskin rugs line the floor. There is a wood-burner for heating, but the interior of the hut is kept uncluttered thanks to the kitchen and bathroom just outside. This well designed shelter can be opened up to give the chef or bather a unique feeling of being in the woods, or tightly closed if the weather turns. There are hobs, a fridge and a bath with a shower attached, all gas powered, plus a fire pit for more traditional campfire cookery. Groceries can be supplied by your hosts. Simply order before you get there from the list provided and get a delivery of local, seasonal produce to your camp.

"We had a fantastic time. The shepherd's hut was cosy and beautifully done out. We loved cooking on the wood burning stoves and using the bath with the view of the woods. Fresh eggs from our lovely host who couldn't have done more for us. A very relaxing break in gorgeous surroundings. We saw deer every day of our stay. We'd love to go back and will recommend to everyone."

"LOVED our stay :) We arrived (& left!) mid storm, but it didn't matter, it was such a beautiful place and we had lovely local food to eat, a wood burning stove in every room and Scrabble! It was romantic and cosy, and I can't wait to book our next stay somewhere with your guys."

"The camp was superb! The toilet took a lot of getting used to, but I loved how everything was so eco-friendly. Tabitha was an excellent host and made us feel welcome. The location was fantastic, close enough for ease of access to the local villages and pubs, but not so close as to impose on the secluded nature of the camps. The bed was luxurious and the fire kept us nice and warm when the weather outside was wet and windy. I cannot praise this place enough, best holiday I've ever had!"

"Absolutely loved it, fantastic place to stay - this was our second visit and we will definitely go back. The location is great - so peaceful, accommodation is perfect and the owners are very friendly. The only bad thing was the weather! "

"The best thing was the location - surrounded by trees and fields just beyond, with mountains in view and a fire pit all to ourselves. Very tranquil and good fun to cook over a fire. All the facilities provided were high quality, well serviced and worked perfectly - which is just what you need when in a more isolated location. Even with some poor June weather we were comfortable and warm - spending most evenings 'braving' it outdoors - with a good fire going. The welcome was very warm, friendly and informative and we appreciated the eco standards and food basket. It is evident not only hard work goes into running the accommodation but also thought and care."

"Had the best weekend ever, kept it surprise from my husband who works away in London and who do sent do camping!!! But he is totally converted to glamping now and wants to go again but for a week!! Very impressed with the whole set up, took 2 boys aged 13 and 14 who had a ball making fires, everything there that we needed, very clean and comfy (especially the beds) and lovely and private with great views, lovely welcome from Tabitha, couldn't have asked for more and good value too."

"What an absolutely fabulous long weekend we had at Scales. Blencathra was perfect in every way - secluded, romantic, comfortable (the mattress was wonderful) and frankly, the best equipped self catering we have ever stayed in ... tea towels, washing up liquid, plenty of night lights, a decent corkscrew and lovely crockery.

"The mountain biking with Adrian on Monday was equally brilliant - exhausting and exhilarating - he took us on the old mining railway track out of Keswick then up above Threlkeld. Nothing was too much trouble ... We couldn't recommend him enough."

"We had the most wonderful time! The camp was just perfect and really well designed. Fabulous facilities, amazing location & views, lots of little touches that made it really special. Tabatha was the most welcoming and friendly host. Absolute heaven on earth."
