Treetops Treehouse is quite literally a whole house in a tree. Designed around the massive 250 year old oak tree in the grounds of the Fox & Hounds Country Hotel, owners Nick and Tara realised there was enough space within the canopy to create a seriously spacious apartment, and they really made the most of it – the whole interior is a warren of interconnected rooms, designed in and around the branches. There's a bedroom with kingsize bed upstairs, a living room and kitchen downstairs, and a contemporary wood burner keeping you cosy at all times. There’s even a bathroom with a copper bathtub for total bubbly bliss! While the treehouse is perfect for a romantic getaway, just down a few steps down from the main bedroom is a real dream room for children, with criss-crossed bunks and a ladder of branches leading up to the top. The whole structure is designed with subtle luxury and nature in mind, and the furniture is finished with oak hardwood saved from the tree itself.
After taking in the interior, open up the big French doors and step onto the deck. Find the secret sheltered cubby hole and settle down into the bean bags, where you can look over the fishing lake and the Douglas Fir treetops of Heywood Forest. Once you’ve climbed up the wooden steps, the height gives the advantage of feeling completely private, with the branches to yourself, while the hotel with its spa and bar is just below. You can even watch the local train chug past beneath you!
Treetops Treehouse is set in the North Devon Biosphere reserve, with the River Taw just below. As well as fishing on the lake and river, there are a whole range of rural activities to enjoy. If you want to leave the car behind, Eggesford train station is just a 5 minute walk away, and the Tarka line runs to Barnstaple in one direction and Exeter in the other.
