A huge, multi-level treehouse within the branches of a 250 year old oak tree

Treetops Treehouse is quite literally a whole house in a tree. Designed around the massive 250 year old oak tree in the grounds of the Fox & Hounds Country Hotel, owners Nick and Tara realised there was enough space within the canopy to create a seriously spacious apartment, and they really made the most of it – the whole interior is a warren of interconnected rooms, designed in and around the branches. There's a bedroom with kingsize bed upstairs, a living room and kitchen downstairs, and a contemporary wood burner keeping you cosy at all times. There’s even a bathroom with a copper bathtub for total bubbly bliss! While the treehouse is perfect for a romantic getaway, just down a few steps down from the main bedroom is a real dream room for children, with criss-crossed bunks and a ladder of branches leading up to the top. The whole structure is designed with subtle luxury and nature in mind, and the furniture is finished with oak hardwood saved from the tree itself.

After taking in the interior, open up the big French doors and step onto the deck. Find the secret sheltered cubby hole and settle down into the bean bags, where you can look over the fishing lake and the Douglas Fir treetops of Heywood Forest. Once you’ve climbed up the wooden steps, the height gives the advantage of feeling completely private, with the branches to yourself, while the hotel with its spa and bar is just below. You can even watch the local train chug past beneath you!

Treetops Treehouse is set in the North Devon Biosphere reserve, with the River Taw just below. As well as fishing on the lake and river, there are a whole range of rural activities to enjoy. If you want to leave the car behind, Eggesford train station is just a 5 minute walk away, and the Tarka line runs to Barnstaple in one direction and Exeter in the other.

Our guests say...

Our stay was all too short. We were amazed at the design of the treehouse and felt immediately relaxed and a world away from everyday pressures. Little details like cowshed organic toiletries, soft white towels, tea, coffee, jams, eggs, bread and butter, were all appreciated. The setting was magical and in the evening we opened the doors wide, lit the wood burner and felt as if we were part of the tree and its natural visitors. We slept in clean white bedding on comfortable beds carved into the treehouse. It was just heavenly!

We had the most amazing stay in the trees. The treehouse was awe inspiring and being able to eat, sit and live amongst the trees was a real one off experience. The food hamper from the hotel was amazing and the food was local, fresh and flavoursome.

Treehouse was perfect, a beautiful getaway nestled into a quaint area of Devon. Fully catered, with more than one would expect for a treehouse! Great for a romantic break but also would be an ideal location for a family holiday! The only downside, it is a little bit closed off, with neither myself or partner driving there was little to explore in the surrounding area but we still had a great time

We booked the treehouse as a big surprise for our two daughters aged 6 and 7. They were so excited when they saw the magical place in the big old oak tree. We had a memorable stay over halloween night.

Perfect from start to finish. A magical place, nicely hidden so the kids got a big surprise. Every last detail of the design was stunning, and the thoughtful extras like the jams, milk, water and Cowshed toiletry were delightful.

I have just had a long weekend from 4th June-7th with my partner at the treehouse. I'm a travel counsellor so always looking at new places to go. What an amazing place such detail and good quality and finish. The weather was beautiful sitting looking over the lake at breakfast lunch and dinner was awesome . Everything we needed was in the house for us. The BBQ pack was super meat was amazing. We had long walks after lunch each day such beautiful surroundings. The river was beautiful also to take a small walk my partner even paddled in it. Been surrounded by all this nature was incredible. I will be recommending my clients and friends and family to have a stay here. The robes were a great touch the fire was so warming whilst we sat with the doors open listening to the birds of an evening. The staff at the hotel were brilliant and helpful.

Fantastic stay in the treehouse , our second trip there. Weather was really nice, it is so peaceful and relaxing there and the bathtub is amazing - but best of all is waking up to see the tree branches directly outside of the window with clear blue sky, amazing !

We had the most amazing time. I proposed to my girlfriend on the balcony after we'd explored the rooms and were about to open out champagne. She said yes and we had the most idilic few days relaxing in the treehouse and beautiful grounds.

We stayed here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It's a fantastic treehouse, beautifully made with everything you could possibly need. We ate in the hotel on one night, and the food was exceptional. The hospitality of all the staff was absolutely lovely. There were special touches in the treehouse, such as bread, jams, and cider

An awesome experience for the whole family (2 adults, 2 children). The attention to detail was perfect - it was like staying at a 5* hotel at the top of the tree.! We didnt want to leave! Facilities amazing - wood burner in a treehouse?! And a sunday roast in the hotel after the hotels nature walk. Perfect weekend! I have recommended to everyone I know. (Be good to go back without the kids but Im not sure they would let us!)

"Treetops treehouse is absolutely brilliant. We stayed as a birthday treat for my boyfriend and he was amazed!  The style and finish is gorgeous and so cosy and romantic!  We couldn't decide whether to sleep in the kids bunks or the double bed as both were fun!  Recommend as either a luxury romantic getaway or fun family stay.  The food from the restaurant in the fox and hounds country hotel was outstanding with very friendly and efficient service"
