Eden Hall - Penrith, Cumbria

Sat right beside the river with a private stretch of fishing and even some very nice fly and spinning pools there to borrow, this could be the perfect place to fish away to your heart's content. With the woods behind hiding the lodge you will feel like the only people for miles. There is also access to some of the finest salmon and brown trout beats around. And why not make an early start to head out with the local gamekeeper to source your own lunch or dinner?

It's fair to say the owners, the Holden-Hindleys, have gone all out to make this the complete wooden lodge experience. The lodge itself was meticulously constructed using traditional methods from timber cut from the estate. There is luxury at this wild frontier too. Inside, it's a bright open space, with comfy furniture arranged around the long burner and the kitchen is fully fitted with modern appliances for cooking up what you've caught. Then sit on the covered terrace to enjoy eating outside whatever the weather. The master bedroom is tucked away at the top of a cast iron stair spiral case, with splendid views from the elevated position of the salmon run in spring. A true immersion in nature.

Old Edenhall

The original Edenhall

“Whene'er this cup shall break or fall, farewell the luck of Eden Hall.”

These are the ominous words uttered to the first butler of Edenhall as he stole the celebrated drinking glass called The Luck of Eden Hall from a company of fairies and refused to return it. The original hall is gone, demolished in 1934, but the impressive gate house remains. The cup, on the other hand, is still preserved to this day in The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, lest disaster befalls those that stay at Edenhall to this day.

Wildlife & environment

It's no surprise that The Lodge blends into its surroundings so well, given that the timber it's made from was taken from the Edenhall estate itself. Truly local sourcing! Good insulation and the wood-burner, fuelled with the same local material, keep the impact on the environment to a minimum.

As well as the Lake District being nearby, the estate itself is home to deer as well as plenty of other wildlife and salmon and brown trout abound in the rivers and pools all around.
