Scales Plantation - Penrith, Cumbria

High in the wilds of the North Lakes, in the woods around Scales Farm, Tabatha and Rob Wilson have created a series of fabulous luxury camping boltholes. Three shepherd's hut camps each with a cosy hut and a timber kitchen set in private semicircular clearings on the edge of the forest plus a family canvas cabin and a double bell tent site. The sites are sheltered and peaceful, with views out towards Bowscale Fell and Mount Skiddaw and the Lake District.

As part of the regeneration of the woodland, the once thick canopy has been thinned to allow wildlife such as the resident red squirrels to flourish. In time the camps will come to feel like a natural extension of the Lake District and in some ways, with beautiful walks across the fells on your doorstep, they already are. You can get trail advice or hire bikes just down the road and head into the hills, then come back to the rustic comfort of the hut for a toasting by the wood-burner.

Pets and kids are both most welcome at Scales Plantation but please keep dogs under control as it is a working farm

North Lake District views

The concept behind Scales Plantation was born through Tab and Rob’s desire to share the sensational beauty of their home with the rest of the world. The working sheep and cattle farm sits roughly 1000 feet above sea level where life on an upland farm is not always easy. Nevertheless, the breathtaking views over the North Lake Fells easily make up for all the hard work and long hours.

Environmental Policy

Tab and Rob are working hard to safeguard their little slice of Cumbria for future generations. With solar powered electricity, self composting loos and enthusiastic recycling, the green ethos at Scales Plantation is clearly visible. The family is involved in numerous environmental schemes. They have cleared acres of woodland to preserve and encourage wildlife breeding grounds and laid over 1km of hedgerow, planted over 2500 upland hardwoods and created seven ponds and wetland environments. They have also set aside 100 acres of moorland for heather regeneration to provide habitat for grouse.

Wildlife

Cumbrian red squirrel

Scales Plantation is home to a variety of wildlife. The woodlands of the Lake District remain one of the few areas of the country where the red squirrel can still be found in the wild. Cumbria is rich in birdlife and over 200 bird species are recorded in Cumbria in any one year. Many visitors to the Lake District in recent years have shared in the excitement of seeing ospreys breeding in craggy woodland near Bassenthwaite Lake.
