A 1971 Airstream Sovereign and a cabin in the woods with a natural swimming pool, 2CV and all your provisions included

A vintage Airstream, a hand-built thinking space in the woods, a natural pool for splashing about and a 2CV: with no other guests around, it's all yours to enjoy. Your cupboards, fridge and wine rack come fully stocked with fabulous local produce to see you through your stay, not to mention kitchen essentials like good olive oil and balsamic, and - an indulgent touch - the Nespresso machine. You shouldn't need to pick up supplies (fresh bread is delivered daily), but if you want to see the sights, potter about the pretty nearby villages and zip past vineyards in 'Lemon,' your vintage Citroen 2CV. There are also bikes and fishing rods, and a vegetable patch where you might pick chillies, courgettes, aubergines, peppers, or salad for a light lunch, though in autumn, ceps grow in the woods, a good few kilos of which Sara takes to her delighted local restaurant.

The restored 1971 Airstream Sovereign under the shady oak trees was rescued by Sara all the way from Jacksonville, and serves as bedroom, kitchen and living space, while the bathroom has a proper hot shower. Thirty seconds through the trees hides your wooden cabin, simply furnished inside; outside on the deck there's a sun lounger dating from the golden age of ocean liners, ready for an evening apéritif. For scribblers, paper, ink, a printer and internet access are provided: one of Sara & Stéphane's happy guests, a professional writer, says "if you can't write here, you can't write anywhere." For the rest of us, there's the 50-acre estate with its wonderful wildlife - watch wild boar and Golden Oriels go by - plus a library of books and DVDs to explore from the comfort of the 1940s club chairs. Out and about, visit the historic villages of Castelmoron D'Albret and St Emilion to pick up a bottle of good Bordeaux - this is sunny wine country!

Our guests say...

"The stay was beyond good. In fact everything was fantastic! The owners, their dogs, the 60' Airstream itself, the homemade food and the wine, the writer's shed, the bbq and driving around small French country lanes next to vineyards in the beloved 'Lemon" Citroen 2CV. It would be illegal not to go! Best: the entire stay, worst: leaving. Hint three days is a bit short."

"We loved the concept provided so thoughtfully by Sara and Stephane. It surpassed our expectations and was a real holiday.  The Airsteam and its furnishings are very stylish and surprisingly comfortable. Even the on-board shower and WC is adequate for a large man. The ambiance of the setting is amazing and the swimming hole is a real pleasure especially with the orchestral frogs. We even saw a Golden Oriel. What a fabulous spot. We will go again.

"We had the most magical time at the French retreat. Sara is very keen that you leave your worries behind during your stay and we found we had no worries in the world, just full tummies and big grins.    Sara, Stephane and Grace are the most welcoming hosts you could imagine – they invited us to their home for a fabulous dinner and plenty of wine and Sara was quite happy for us to sneak into her wine store which provided quite the goldmine. They were only too happy to help with Sara lending me her walking shoes so my shoes wouldn't get ruined in the woods and Grace's yummy cookies which gave Martha Stewart a run for her money.  The airstream was in a magical setting of woods and meadows, surrounded by vineyards. We spent four days there but came away feeling there was still plenty more to do, explore and soak up some more sun by the natural pool. It’s the perfect gem of a getaway – we have never felt so sad to say goodbye to such a beautiful place but we will be back."

"The French Retreat was exactly as I had envisaged and hoped for - tranquil, rural, relaxed. The welcome from Sara, Stephane and Grace (and Gilbert, Poppy and Molly) was as friendly as you could wish for and they bent over backwards to ensure our stay was what we had wanted it to be. The Airstream was fabulous and really comfortable, Sara had thoughtfully stocked the fridge, the shower was hot and the coffee machine was a wonderful touch. The natural pool was beautifully cooling on the baking hot days and just to listen to the water trickling and the various sounds from the woods and surrounding meadows was incredibly calming. It was such a tranquil environment that I couldn't bear to shatter the tranquility by playing my music. I have been describing it as "a complete detox, but without giving up the alcohol"! It's not just for writers but for anyone who needs a bit of solitude and to remove themselves from their everyday 'bubble'. If we could have stayed longer (like forever) we would have done."
