Cooking

Cooking facilities include a giant (five foot) cast iron kadai firepit with conservation-grade charcoal from Butterfly Conservation and local Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserves. Cooking can be done directly on the kadai or on the oversized firestone, with griddle or flat surface. A range of high quality cooking utensils, Japanese steels, artisan cutlery, bespoke glasses and tableware is provided with fine linen.

There is a top range Tornado Boiler Company kettle, supplied with hand-tied kindling bundles for hot chocolate, herbal drinks, tea and filter coffee (all supplied).

Inside the roundhouse is a massive wooden tableround, with hidden drawer for a welcome hamper and sitting cushions.

Outside the roundhouse is a granite trough with close-fitting wooden lid, filled with fresh ice in the summer and stream-water in the winter, to act as a green fridge. Alongside is a larder style cabinet with crockery, wineglasses and cutlery alongside space for bread and other provisions to be kept safe from foxes, badgers and inquisitive insects. The larder is sited on the cooler north side of the Roundhouse and designed using modern science combined with ancient technology to create a flow of cooling air.

In the stream just outside lays a drinks fridge and wine basket, stocked with drinks kept chilled by the pure waters of this cool upland stream and winched up by rope and pulley by the guests as needed.

Washing

The bathroom is a bespoke copper-roofed Shepherd’s Hut, made specifically as a wet room for Love-in-the-Round by Nic and Lucy from the base of a 100 year old Roma Gypsy wagon base, given to us by modern Roma Travelers and designed for us by one of the set crew on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

This well-insulated wetroom is fitted with a locally sourced porcelain tile floor, covered in recycled galvanized sheet and beech cladded; whilst for ease of use a top-line gas powered shower fitted with PV powered pump pours hot water through a huge ‘rainstorm’ shower-head – big enough for two to shower together.

They have two mountain bikes for loan to join the close-by award-winning Camel Trail and its beautiful (flat and leisurely) meanderings through some of the most stunning countryside in the UK; to Wadebridge and the arts it has to offer or to Padstow and the best pasties in Cornwall -apparently. Camel Cycle Hire even run a service to collect cyclists and their charge so you need not get worn out. The village beach is only a 15 minute drive away along the tree-lined and flower-draped sunken country lanes. Access is secret (shhh) and well hidden, but we will be handing over a top of the range Garmin to guide you to the best place to park and directions of which bush to duck under for the secret valley path to acres of talcum powder white sand and turquoise water. The north coast, with its stunning steep cliffs of thrift, rare Rock Sea-lavenders and maritime grasses, has countless hidden coves and sheltered bays to picnic in, explore or bathe together. The gentler south coast has a myriad of pretty villages and mile upon mile of coastal footpaths to journey along, with stops to share cream teas of course.

Kayaking flooded woodland valleys - 13 miles away - Your luxurious bolt-hole is at the source of the River Camel, flowing to the rugged north coast, and of the River Fowey, flowing to the gentle south coast. Spend a few hours or the whole day drifting downstream with the tide along the majestic River Fowey to explore the deep, hidden folds of this steep-sided valley all the way to the sea. Ancient oak woodlands cloaked in mosses and ferns spread from the very heights to dip their lowest branches tantalisingly into the water as you glide by... Kayak Hire for couples and even guided tours as Fowey River Expeditions can be easily arranged, with the Love-in-the-Round sat-nav loaded with all you will need

Learn to surf - 12 miles - Offering the highest level of instruction through the most experienced coaching team in the UK, the nearby surf school on stunning Polzeath beach is an internationally renowned  surfer’s paradise. Sealife Safaris - Perhaps head out for an exhilarating ride with your mermaid or merman to explore the spectacular north Cornwall cliffs and hidden bays by speedboat rib on a Wildlife Seafari? This is by far the best way to see megafauna such as gentle giant Basking Sharks, pods of inquisitive Bottle-nosed Dolphins, fluffy white Grey Seal pups and the leviathan majestic whales that share these turquoise clear waters with the two of you.

Meet your hosts

Meet Nic & Lucy

Nic & Lucy fell deeply in love, but when they could steal time together, never seemed to find the space befitting their romance anywhere in the UK. Love-in-the-Round was created out of their desire to find time together. Having worked for the World Wide Fund for Nature, Nic is a career professional naturalist at the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Lucy is a horticulturalist and artist. The romantic couple manage the whole farm using traditional farming techniques, specifically for its nature conservation and landscape interest

Wildlife & Environment

You'll have exclusive access to 11 acres of stunning wildlife rich habitat. The land is shaped as a heart, with the Love-in-the-Round roundhouse near the centre, beside a huge circular prehistoric enclosed field, now ancient woodland. The whole site is extremely private and secluded, with a feeling of sanctuary and gentle wilderness. Spiritually, the site feels welcoming and safe, exciting and natural – magical is the most commonly used phrase we hear.

The view from the roundhouse looks north through unspoilt ancient woodlands cloaked with rare ferns and dripping with a host of rare mosses across their own crystal-clear steam with Dippers nesting and Kingfishers reeling past, and south across a rare species-rich MG5 Cynosurus cristatus - Centaurea nigra wildflower meadow filled with clouds of butterflies and spangled with Glow-worms to an ancient Badger sett on the hillside high above. On the hill above Trehudreth, the Colvannick Stone stands as a sacred pagan fertility stone and marks the start of stunning Bodmin Moor’s open access moorland and world class walking, cycling and riding.

The species-rich grasslands, humid-rush pasture, wetlands, wet heathland, mire communities, ancient and restored Cornish hedges, field margins, oak high forest, wet woodland carr, Hazel coppice and everything on site is managed specifically for their nature conservation interests by a professional naturalist alongside his professional horticulturalist/ artist partner / love of his life.

Trehudreth provides a vital wildlife corridor linking the European Protected site of the Camel Valley Special Area of Conservation and the nationally important Bodmin Moor, North Site of Species Scientific Interest. The land at is managed and monitored by a biological taxonomist and ecologist for the nationally and globally rare species and habitats is supports. Love-in-the-Round sits sympathetically within this landscape and helps pay for some of this work to be done to enhance the wildlife and landscape interest of the whole site using traditional and sustainable low-impact methods.

The whole site and the surrounding land is managed on strict organic principles. A fully registered fold of rare black Highland Cattle known as the ancient wild cattle ‘Kyles’ graze the wildflower meadows of Love-in-the-Round. Fully registered rare-breed Kune-Kune grass eating pigs graze one of the meadows to encourage tall-herb fen vegetation and woodland ride communities. A few rare breed happy chickens peck in amongst a small woodland plantation and lay treats for the pigs.

All materials used to grow/make the Roundhouse have come from our the land itself at Love-in-the-Round or from friends acting as suppliers.

  • Oat and barley straw came from farms downstream.
  • The render came from Cornish Lime Company.
  • The dyes used are from natural earth and plant pigments.
  • Raw copper was brought from an overspend on a building project, with an extremely low carbon footprint. With the copper panels beaten together to fused into one sheet, it will last forever.

Not one living native tree was cut to make the Roundhouse. All Pedunculate and Sessile Oak has been hand chosen from already fallen trees. The veteran Spindle (used by ancient and modern pagans, druids and gorsedd in the UK as their most sacred tree) fell on the ground at the start of the project, ready to be used. Larch was already being clear-felled from a local plantation in preparation for Phytopthera control.

The Roundhouse and Shepherd’s Hut are powered by the Sun. Energy is captured by a sophisticated bespoke photovoltaic system, converted to mains 230V pure sinewave.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise

Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
