Keswick is situated between Skiddaw and Derwentwater and has become the major centre for tourism in the north lakes. Many visitors to Keswick come for the town's string of events including festivals dedicated to such things as beer, films and jazz. Cumberland Derwent Pencil Museum is situated in Keswick and is known for producing high quality brands of fine art pencils, thus making Derwent Pencils the first choice for artists around the world and the museum surely a must see for all pencil fans.

Hesket Newmarket

Keswick Museum and Art Gallery is home to a collection of local history stretching back to Roman times and includes suchitems as the famous 500 year old cat, a penny farthing bicycle and a man trap. One of the prime exhibits is a set of musical stones which are made from the Skiddaw Slate, known as the Musical Stones of Skiddaw.

north lake

The concept behind Scales Plantation was born through Tab and Rob’s desire to share the sensational beauty of their home withthe rest of the world. The working sheep and cattle farm sits roughly 1000 feet above sea level where life on an upland farm is not always easy. Nevertheless, the breathtaking views over the North Lake Fells easily make up for all the hard work and long hours.

Environmental Policy

Tab and Rob are working hard to safeguard their little slice of Cumbria for future generations. With solar powered electricity, self composting loos and enthusiastic recycling, the green ethos at Scales Plantation is clearly visible. The family is involved in numerous environmental schemes. They have cleared acres of woodland to preserve and encourage wildlife breeding grounds and laid over 1km of hedgerow, planted over 2500 upland hardwoods and created seven ponds and wetland environments. They have also set aside 100 acres of moorland for heather regeneration to provide habitat for grouse.

Scales Plantation is home to a variety of wildlife. The woodlands of the Lake District remain one of the few areas of the country where the red squirrel can still be found in the wild. Cumbria is rich in birdlife and over 200 bird species are recorded in Cumbria in any one year. Many visitors to the Lake District in recent years have shared in the excitement of seeing ospreys breeding in craggy woodland near Bassenthwaite Lake.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

Had a very relaxing chilled few days. A beautiful peaceful location to go to experience the outdoor life with a few comforts along the way. Very idyllic with stunning views and oh so peaceful. Enjoyed a lovely evening outside with the fire lit and a few drinks the dogs had a great time exploring the grounds it was set in. The owner was lovely she arrived with a goody bag containing fresh eggs and bacon and a loaf of bread very thoughtful and we enjoyed them thoroughly the next morning for breakfast. Nothing was too much bother. Very back to basic but very relaxing. Set up was great and very comfortable would definitely go back in the summer and would highly recommend . Well done on a fantastic set up couldn't fault anything

We had a lovely stay at Blencathra, it was just what we needed to relax and unwind in the wilderness. The camp was immaculate when we arrived and had just the right balance between little luxuries / back to basics for a true glamping experience. The owner was very welcoming and helpful, and the goodie bag of camping essentials (eggs & bacon!) was greatly appreciated and also delicious cooked over a wood fire! We had our two border collies with us who loved roaming around the camp and exploring the plethora of walks and footpaths nearby. This was a great base to explore Keswick and beyond, and as our first adventure into the northern lakes we will certainly be back!

This is our sixth year of visiting Scales Plantation which I think says it all. A brilliant, beautiful, calming and restoring place. Comfortable and cosy while at the same time feeling like a little bit of "wild". We LOVE it. Gill, Paul and Jessie

It was amazing! At night, with the stove going and the lights on, it felt as though you were truly alone. It was a very comfortable experience.

Our stay at Blencathra was everything we had hoped for and more. It was the perfect mixture of back to basics (but with some lovely comforts) we so enjoyed coming back to our camp late in the afternoon and lighting the fires. The views were incredible. The shepherds hut was so comfortable, even in the storm which we endured on our first night. Our host Tab was fantastic, only a text away if we needed anything but also leaving us to it. She left for us some bacon and eggs which were so tasty and a nice surprise. We will be back!

We had a brilliant week at Blencathra, the camp was spot on. Tab was really friendly and helpful. We had everything we needed. We cooked every night on the fire outside and had a generally chilled week in a fantastic location.

We had a great 4 day break at Blencathra. The facilities were excellent - really cosy shepherds hut. A simple kitchen with dining table which had a gas powered fridge - who knew these even existed - and a great little wood burning stove. The attached bathroom was a really nice touch - it too had a stove so even though it was chilly outside, the bathroom was lovely and warm. It's not the first time we have used a composting toilet and it was fine. The decking area with a bench was nice to have lunch on. We were lucky to have pretty spectacular weather for nearly our entire stay. And of course, the location was great. Deep in the countryside with sheep surrounding the site - it was picturesque.

Husband and I stayed for his birthday weekend, and had fab time. Stunning 'away from it all' place. Not 'cheap', but I thought it worth the money for the benefit and quality time spent with hubby :) Unfortunately the Malcom Wilson Rally happened to be in the forest nearby (Greystoke) on the Saturday so we initially noticed the noise of the cars, but then blocked it out as we relaxed into the place! Owner came to apologise. She was really lovely.

Amazing! Nice little camp, perfect for the 3 of us (my dog included) took a trip to to Keswick and walked the derwent water, the next day we went to aira force waterfall-beautiful, then walked from there round the ullswater way to glenridding and got the streamer boat back! Amazing views, loved every minute!

Absolutely amazing getaway - second time we have been now, and Tabatha the farmer was once again amazing and very helpful! Such a lovely welcoming place, we hope to return with mates in the Summer!

We had 2 wonderful days in the Lake District, my partner had booked us a weekend food smoking course near by, and Blencathra was a lovely base. It's such a secluded spot, and though there are other people on site, it's so spread out that you really feel like you have the place to yourself.

It was awesome. Loved it in the sun, in the rain, in the wind and rain and in the howling gale and monsoon weather on the last day!

Amazing! The place is so well looked after and is welcoming and friendly. We will be going back!

Loved it - tranquility and calm on a weekend of Brexit madness. A great place to base ourselves for a weekend of running, hiking and exploring in the Lakes. Blencathra is a wonderful place to come back to each evening to relax, freshen up and enjoy the beautiful countryside.

What an incredibly well designed place. Each camp felt like it had been there for years using the natural surroundings perfectly. All we could hear where sheep, birds and the wind in the trees! A perfect place to escape a busy life within nature but with some luxuries thrown in.

We loved our little camp. The accommodation is so charming and well thought out, the woodland setting is private and very peaceful, and there are views through the trees to the nearby mountains. A truly idyllic place.

Very enjoyable even though the weather wasn't great. Loved the glamping experience still camping but with added luxury and a nice breakfast pack full of local produce. Great location for exploring the lakes.

Wow what can I say absolutely brilliant. Piece and quite but so much to do and see, and our host Tabitha so lovely and turned up with a basket of goodies. And so helpful would recommend to other people and will certainly go back

Very relaxing short break. Location fantastic and facilities exceeded all expectations.

The location was fantastic ,peaceful private . Accommodation was great the shepherds but was very cosy even on a very frosty evening. We had everything we needed. The hamper was lovely , the bacon was so good even better cooked the wood burner . Tabs was also great extremely helpful when needed. We felt we had left the world behind and there was just us. We will be back in the autumn.

Fantastic! Luxury away from home and really suited our needs. The accommodation was of a really high standard and all the essentials were provided. The shepherds hut was warm and cozy and the bathroom facilities were excellent. We will definitely return!

It was lovely. We were on a very private site in comfortable accommodation. A great escape yet a great base from which to explore.

Magical. Hair and clothes smelling of bonfire, our dogs playing wild in the woods, candlelit baths and a proper bed. Rewilding for the 21st century! We have a 'no returns' policy on our holiday destinations usually but we'll definitely return to Scales plantation. Thank you Tabitha and Rob.

Absolutely loved it. The hut was fantastic, the other buildings were great too, but best of all was the privacy- so relaxing. And for the Lake district the weather was kind. Tabitha was lovely and helpful, but also not intrusive at all, respecting our privacy. We will return.

A lovely break in the Shepherd's hut. Great hosts, very friendly and helpful.

Superb! Looked amazing on the web but exceeded all expectations in the flesh. Secluded and private, and a tantalising view of Blencathra to lure you onto the fells. Not that we needed it. Tabitha was a friendly and welcoming host with a great sense of humour. I proposed to Amanda after 3 fells while enjoying a moonlit bath. We are now engaged. We cannot recommend Scales Plantation highly enough.

Wonderful stay, Tab and Rob were perfect hosts. Our camp was spotless and well stocked with wood for the lovely fires. The welcome basket full of milk, bread, eggs and bacon was a nice touch

Blencathra is an absolutely magical place. The most beautiful setting, and a lovely set up - just enough to make for a comfortable stay, and not too much to feel silly. There was a storm on our first night, which made for a fairly uncomfortable night - but considering we were in a tiny hut in the middle of nowhere, it was warm and cosy! Tab was lovely and very helpful and has made a really special place. I can't wait to go back in the summer to make better use of the outdoor space, and roll those kitchen windows up!

"The camp was lovely. Great position overlooking Blencathra. Due to the high winds the gas boilers pilot light was blowing out a lot. The wood supply was a little short for a 4 night stay in mid winter, given this was the only source of room heating available. In the hut it would be nice if the bulkhead lights could be turned on & off individually"

"We had the most fabulous time!! Staying in camp and making the most of all the wonderful amenities was one of our greatest pleasures. Plenty of logs to keep the burner going - which we could cook on! Tabitha was always at the end of the phone to answer any questions we had and popped up in the evenings to check all was ok and say hi. She was a fantastic host. Beautiful scenery surrounded us so we had lots of walking, we climbed Blencathra too which was breathtaking. The whole trip was a huge success"

"This was our first experience with Canopy and Stars. A late booking for a weekend. When I booked I was asked if it was to celebrate something, which it was, my 50th birthday and my sons. The place was amazing, albeit the bad weather. The shepherds hut and kitchen / bathroom areas were extremely warm with the log burners. Our two boys loved and even though I do not camp!! this was great!"

"We had an amazing stay at Blencathra camp, Scales Plantation. Very unique accommodation in a very remote and beautiful part of Cumbria. A luxurious take on camping."

"Yes we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and had amazing weather. Everything was great, the cabin was amazingly cosy and the kitchen area was great, the cooking facilities kept us warm and cosy and we really liked the bath, even the compost loo was OK, not smelly and easy to use. The only downside was that we were sort of confimed to our area of the camp, on a previous trip we were more involved in the farm and had more space to roam."

"This was my second stay at Scales Plantation and having been there in wet and windy weather it was wonderful to be there in dry sunny conditions. Being able to sit around the fire pit in the evenings and cook dinner was nice and then to watch the stars appear as night fell was pretty special with clear views in the pitch black. Loved how quickly the hot water turned on and that was most welcome after running/hiking across the fells."

"Fantastic time. Glamping at its best. Location, position and privacy of having your own forest clearing and facilities were superb. Tabitha, the owner, was lovely - also very kindly bought a welcome back of bacon, eggs, bread, milk, etc."

"We had been to another part of the site the year before and wanted to go back again. We decided to try a different part of the site and loved this plot too. Tabitha made us feel very welcome. The children explored, we cooked over the camp fire, and in the kitchen. It was a great base for walking, and exploring the Lake District. The huts were so well kept and clean. We all loved the experience."

"Loved every minute. Tab, the owner was so welcoming and the breakfast pack was a lovely addition. We couldn't ask for a better weekend away."

"I have stayed at Scales 5 or 6 times now and have enjoyed it more each time. Tabitha is so friendly and welcoming, the cabins are cosy, comfortable and clean and the location is wonderful, breathtaking views and a feeling of peaceful seclusion make it such a relaxing break. I love it and so does everyone who has stayed there with me. It is definitely my favourite place to take a holiday."

"It was wonderful, our 2 boys loved living in a hut in the woods for the weekend, they were in their element.  Building dens, having the most amazing adventures... Walking up Skiddaw at 5 and 8 what a great achievement! Then back to a fabulous warm bath, then ready to toast marshmallows on the camp fire with a hot chocolate.  Excellent family place, Tabitha made us feel really welcome, and they were so busy with the lambs."

"Loved it... beautiful, quiet and close to the Fells."

"Fantastic, beautiful place, perfect get away."

"Warm, comfortable, secluded. A rustic but luxurious experience. Perfect getaway"

"We received a friendly welcome from attentive owners who have good attention to the little details that can make a holiday special."

"We loved our stay in Blencathra shepherd's hut.  It was very cosy and comfortable and in a very peaceful, beautiful location.  It was our third visit to Scales Plantation and hopefully we'll be there again soon."

"We had a fantastic time. The shepherd's hut was cosy and beautifully done out. We loved cooking on the wood burning stoves and using the bath with the view of the woods. Fresh eggs from our lovely host who couldn't have done more for us. A very relaxing break in gorgeous surroundings. We saw deer every day of our stay. We'd love to go back and will recommend to everyone."

"LOVED our stay :) We arrived (& left!) mid storm, but it didn't matter, it was such a beautiful place and we had lovely local food to eat, a wood burning stove in every room and Scrabble! It was romantic and cosy, and I can't wait to book our next stay somewhere with your guys."

"The camp was superb! The toilet took a lot of getting used to, but I loved how everything was so eco-friendly.  Tabitha was an excellent host and made us feel welcome. The location was fantastic, close enough for ease of access to the local villages and pubs, but not so close as to impose on the secluded nature of the camps. The bed was luxurious and the fire kept us nice and warm when the weather outside was wet and windy. I cannot praise this place enough, best holiday I've ever had!"

"Absolutely loved it, fantastic place to stay - this was our second visit and we will definitely go back. The location is great - so peaceful, accommodation is perfect and the owners are very friendly.  The only bad thing was the weather! "

"The best thing was the location - surrounded by trees and fields just beyond, with mountains in view and a fire pit all to ourselves.  Very tranquil and good fun to cook over a fire.  All the facilities provided were high quality, well serviced and worked perfectly - which is just what you need when in a more isolated location.  Even with some poor June weather we were comfortable and warm - spending most evenings 'braving' it outdoors - with a good fire going.  The welcome was very warm, friendly and informative and we appreciated the eco standards and food basket.  It is evident not only hard work goes into running the accommodation but also thought and care."

"Had the best weekend ever, kept it surprise from my husband who works away in London and who do sent do camping!!! But he is totally  converted to glamping now and wants to go again but for a week!!  Very impressed with the whole set up, took 2 boys aged 13 and 14 who had a ball making fires, everything there that we needed, very clean and comfy (especially  the beds)  and lovely and private with great views, lovely welcome from Tabitha, couldn't have asked for more and good value too."

"What an absolutely fabulous long weekend we had at Scales. Blencathra was perfect in every way - secluded, romantic, comfortable (the mattress was wonderful) and frankly, the best equipped self catering we have ever stayed in ... tea towels, washing up liquid, plenty of night lights, a decent corkscrew and lovely crockery.

"The mountain biking with Adrian on Monday was equally brilliant - exhausting and exhilarating - he took us on the old mining railway track out of Keswick then up above Threlkeld. Nothing was too much trouble ... We couldn't recommend him enough."

"We had the most wonderful time! The camp was just perfect and really well designed. Fabulous facilities, amazing location & views, lots of little touches that made it really special. Tabatha was the most welcoming and friendly host. Absolute heaven on earth."

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. 3. Changes and Cancellations by the Owner

We will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if the Owner needs to make a significant change to your confirmed Arrangements or to cancel them. We will also liaise between you and the Owner in relation to any alternative Booking offered by the Owner but we will have no further liability to you.

4. Complaints

Because the contract for your Booking is between you and the Owner, any queries or concerns should be addressed to them. In the event that you have any complaint about your stay, please notify the Owner as soon as possible. If you don’t follow this procedure there will be less opportunity for the Owner to investigate and resolve your complaint and so make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Delays may also mean that amount of compensation you may be entitled to may be reduced. Whether or not your complaint is dealt with satisfactorily, please also contact us as we appreciate all feedback. It’s important to us and the Owner to know that you’ve enjoyed your stay or if anything could have been improved.

5. Pricing

Canopy & Stars reserve the right to amend advertised prices at any time on behalf of the Owner. We also reserve the right to correct errors in both advertised and confirmed prices.Special note: changes and errors sometimes occur.

6. Information & Accuracy

The information and prices shown on this website are varied from time to time and may change between the time you first view a property and make a Booking. You should check that all the details are as you expect prior to making a Booking. It is always possible that, despite our best efforts, some of the properties (including the features and extras available) may be incorrectly described and/or priced. If we discover this is the case after you have made a Booking, we reserve the right to contact you with details of the correct information and/or pricing and will give you the option to:

(1) proceed with the Booking based on the correct information and/or pricing, which may require the payment of an additional amount by you;

(2) subject to availability, change your booking dates to dates when the pricing can be honoured ad so no additional charge to you. In the event that a lower price can be offered for alternative dates then the difference would be refunded;

(3) cancel the Booking. If we do not receive your instructions within 5 days of contacting you, we reserve the right to cancel your Booking without liability to you.

7. Our Responsibility for your Booking

Your contract is with the Owner and its booking conditions apply. As Agent, we accept no responsibility for the actual provision of the Booking. Our responsibilities are limited to making the Booking in accordance with your instructions and acting properly in accordance with our legal duties as an Agent. We accept no responsibility for any information about the Booking that we pass on to you in good faith. However, in the event that we are found liable to you on any basis whatsoever, our maximum liability to you is limited to twice the cost of your Booking (or the appropriate proportion of this if not everyone on the Booking is affected). We do not exclude or limit any liability for death or personal injury that arises as a result of our negligence or that of any of our employees whilst acting in the course of their employment.

8. Pets

Not all properties accept pets. If you wish to take your pet on holiday, please advise us before booking and we can check whether pets are accepted at the property. You must obtain the prior consent of the Owner before taking any pets to the property. A nightly charge may be made by the Owner for each pet and additional terms may apply.

9. VAT

Many of the Owners of properties in the Canopy & Stars portfolio are not registered for VAT in which case no tax is payable. Where VAT is payable, the tax is included in the advertised holiday rental price.

10. Visa, passport and health requirements.

Unless you tell us otherwise, we assume that all members of your party are British citizens who hold or will hold full British passports valid for the entire duration of the Arrangements you chose to purchase. Information on visa, passport and health requirements, where given and applicable, is so given on this basis. Requirements may change and you are therefore strongly recommended to check the up to date position with the Owner of the Booking, Passport Office, appropriate embassy or consulate or your doctor as applicable in good time before the commencement of your holiday.

11. Insurance

You are strongly recommended to take out personal travel insurance for all members of your party. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. Please read your policy details and take them with you on holiday.

12. Special requests

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.
