A beautiful bell tent in a forest village in Dorset where boardwalks wind through the trees to the sauna

Bodkin is a bell tent with all the bells and whistles! There's plenty of room for two in a king-sized oak bed with soft down bedding. The wood-burner, electric blanket and heated towel rail will keep you cosy all night long, you have a Kelly kettle for making cups of tea, and all sorts of other little essentials. All spaces share the green – in both senses – grass-roofed loos, and the steaming hot woven willow shower with eco-friendly shampoo and conditioner provided. You also have access to the Woodland Kitchen, 50 yards away, the sauna yurt and the huge communal sofa yurt. There are free supplies of Clipper Tea and Dorset Cereals, an honesty bar where you can pick up some local cider and the roaring pizza oven so you can try your hand at camp cooking.

Crafty Camping is a magical place where you can do as much or as little as you please. You can even try your hand at green woodworking, spoon and bowl carving or lathe turning with Guy and the team, before returning fired with creativity to your own little camp. (See Things to Do for more information including taster courses on weekdays.)

Low season (Nov-March): Crafty Camping is open during winter and Guy has taken every care to ensure your comfort. Reindeer skin rugs and down bedding plus electric blankets and heated towel rails will all keep you toasty whatever the weather. In extreme conditions the water pipes in your en suite may freeze, but this is rare. The hardier central showers, loo block and the sauna yurt will stay open whatever the weather.

Meet your hosts

Guy Mallinson

Crafty Camping

The camp came about as a way of allowing people to enjoy the woodland and to demonstrate both that sustainability could be fun and that fun could be had sustainably! The result is the peaceful splendour of the woodland village called Crafty Camping.

Owner Guy Mallinson originally trained as a cabinetmaker and has years of experience in working with wood. He has brought his skillshome to this very special woodland in west Dorset, where he and his team run courses in all types of practical woodcraft under the parachute canopy of the Woodland Workshop. He was the 'Wood Mentor' and the woods the venue for the BBC Mastercrafts series and has been featured in a number of other tv series subsequently.

The Woodland Workshop lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Dorset, close to the Jurassic Coast. The wood, formerly derelict, has been maintained by Guy and the team for the past three years. As Guy says, "a well-managed woodland is a perfect sustainable resource."

What is Green Woodworking?

Green woodworking means both green as in 'unseasoned wood' and green as in environmentally preferable to the alternatives. It offers the opportunity to see the whole process from start to finish - from log to end product. Being unseasoned, it is soft and easy to work with hand tools and working this way offers a unique insight into the properties of wood. It also ensures anyone can do it!

The hand craft techniques and the types of wooden equipment we teach and use are both ancient, as well as being dust free andquiet. Guests have use of all the high quality tools required, sharpened prior to each course. Green wood is also affordable and readily available. The scale of the timber that is extracted for the good management of a woodland is too small for economical conversion into planks. The timber that we use would be otherwise destined for the log pile and has little or no commercial value apart from being cut into firewood. However, the species of tree that we use are the beautiful hardwoods that any other cabinetmaker would routinely use in fine furniture.

When using green wood the logs are cleft (split along the grain) rather than sawn and so we are working much more with the nature of the wood. As a result of this cleaving process, the grain runs along the length of the piece whereas a sawn piece of wood will usually have the grain running diagonally across it. This 'cross grain' is a weak point. This means that pieces made using green woodworking techniques are stronger than mass produced counterparts. What's more, because the wood is worked to shape before it dries, there isn't the tension build-up found in the drying of large sawn boards of dry timber. For this reason green woodwork has less tendency to split and crack as it is drying and we explain how to use the drying process to your advantage.

You'll find green woodworking processes relatively straightforward: the basic techniques can be picked up very quickly by everyone - even those with little or no experience, including children. This means that everyone - including complete beginners - goes away from one of our courses with a finished product to be proud of. Having said that, experienced cabinetmakers also gain a great deal of satisfaction and insight from learning about this specialist area of woodworking.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

We had a wonderful trip, it was cosy, tranquil and comfortable with excellent added bonuses like the sauna and free cereal! We intend to return!

We had a lovely stay in Bodkin. The whole site is very carefully constructed and wherever you look there is some clever woodwork. The outdoor shower was great fun and the pizza oven was also good. The loos were clean and their own hut felt quite smart compared to what you might imagine on a (glorified) camp-site.

"Loved it, extremely relaxing and peaceful."

"I thoroughly enjoyed our stay, it was the perfect wintry setting to ring in the New Year (whilst also being a Christmas present for my partner)"

"Absolutely fantastic. Not sure where the time went but felt completely relaxed upon leaving. A real hide away in the woods with every little detail thought of."

"ll yes! Amazing 4 days - it felt like time stood still and everything had been thought of. Such a peaceful place, if only we could live there....."

Harriet & Nathan

"Had a wonderful time. Loved the attention to detail, everything was beautifully crafted and in sympathy with the environment and not over the top, luxurious but simple at the same time. Fabulous and unusual outdoor shower. Sauna a bonus. Incredibly comfy bed and bell tent was spacious yet cosy with the wood burning stove. Location incredibly peaceful and tranquil. Not too many couples staying so felt very private even though some of the facilities were shared. Beautiful area, and friendly host. Wouldn't have changed a thing about it."

"We had a fantastic stay! It was such a relaxing a peaceful few nights away: just what was needed! Arriving in the evening and wandering through the woods to our tipi was magical, and the open roof showers were amazing...  Best thing was the calm, peaceful atmosphere paired with fabulous was pretty hard to leave. Hoping for a few return visits.  "

"The woodland site was quiet (except for the owls) and had everything we needed - so very relaxing. The outdoor shower, kitchen and other facilities were excellent. Coming back to work ive realised how good it was to be away from all the technology and to try my hand at some woodland crafts."

"Craft Camping experience was fantastic. We were secluded enough to feel isolated from the real world, but close enough to local towns and villages to buy the necessary provisions. The camp site was very well designed and the shared outdoor kitchen was amazing. The outdoor shower has to be used to be fully appreciated, and we made sure we used it as much as possible!"

"Yes we loved our stay! It was a place that we never knew existed and will go back in many years to come. It was truely amazing, the location, the set up and most of all the outside shower!"

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
