*Site can sleep up to 8* A 60s bus, now converted into a comfy escape for couples or families, looking out at the spectacular hills

The bus has been a project long in the making. A loving restoration has turned the well-worked 60s vehicle into a cosy bolthole, giving it a second lease of life and a whole new look with soft wood-colours and homely fabrics. There’s a wood burner to keep you warm, and plenty of room for napping and cooking. The bathroom hut just a few steps away contains a lovely gas powered roll-top bath where you can have a soak with a view (there's a wood burner here as well for when it's really chilly!)

The area around the Majestic Bus has been treated with no less care than the bus itself. The big Dutch barn hides the site from the house and on the other side is nothing but fields for miles, so you’ll be hard pressed to see another soul. The garden area has a fire pit and big cut logs for seats as well as the decking sun trap by the bus and two level grass pitches, either for extra tents or for shaded lazing on long afternoons.

In the surrounding area you’ll find a wealth of things to do from the cultural spot of Hay to adventure sports in the Brecon Beacons, but if you’re tempted just to relax in the bus for a glorious, languid week, we wouldn’t blame you.

Our guests say...

We had a fantastic time. The weather may have been changeable but the bus was lovely and cosy and the views were spectacular. Would highly recommend Hay-on-Wye and particularly the Majestic Bus for a very enjoyable trip away.

The majestic bus was very magical. Very peaceful with fantastic views and not a soul in sight. The chickens, cats and the variety of birds were welcome companions. The flowers cut from the garden and the delicious lemon cake hand made by Layla were a lovely treat. The wood burner was one of the best we had encountered and got the bus so warm and cosy. The huge roll top bath made for two was a great addition to soothe away aching muscles after long walks in the area, particularly with the wood burner to keep the room toasty warm. The games kept us entertained while listening to the quiet pitter patter of rain. All in all, a fantastic stay, thank you!

We had a fantastic stay on the gorgeous and super cosy Majestic Bus! Rob was very welcoming and helpful and the bus was perfect for us and our two boys - just wish we could have stayed longer than two nights.

A tranquil retreat in the country - beautiful and relaxing, like camping but without the hassle!

Amazing Evan my 8 yr old son was over the moon when he seen were we where staying log burner and fire pit. My personal favourite was the bath sooo relaxing with the fire going

My wife and I booked the Majestic Bus for a long weekend. The weather was amazing, which helped a lot but it still would have been a very interesting place to stay regardless. You could tell so much thought and effort had gone into the conversion and Layla did a great job making us feel welcome, showing us how stuff worked and letting us get on with our stay. The location is a little tricky to reach but worth it for such a beautiful and atmospheric location.

Literally the most chilled place ever, absolutely loved it!! Was for my boyfriends birthday and we both loved it and will be coming back again! Also amazing lemon drizzle cake

We were greeted by Layla on arrival, we were a little early but the bus was ready for us. The wood burner was going so the bus was very cosy and warm, such a lovely first impression. We were both in awe of the surroundings and the bus, everything was perfect for our stay. We loved every minute of our stay and didn't want to leave when the time came. It truly was the most relaxing holiday we have ever had and would definitely stay again!

We had a fantastic time, the cake and flowers when we arrived were a great touch. Owners are lovely

What a fantastic stay in a beautiful bus! The rain didn't stop us having a brilliant time.

We had the most incredible holiday at the Majestic Bus. Instant relaxation and the bus and its surroundings couldn't be better. The bus has been created by a couple who are clearly very creative and it's simply beautiful. Amazing flowers were placed in the bus for our arrival and a delicious lemon drizzle cake. Also the most comfortable bed I think I've ever stayed in. A lovely spot to escape to and very romantic. I didn't want to leave...

Our stay on the majestic bus far exceeded even our own high expectations. It is rare to find somewhere so characterful and unique that manages to feel so much like home. The owners have managed to maintain the authenticity of the bus whilst also equipping it with the home comforts necessary to provide a relaxing escape from city life. This homely and welcoming effect was further aided by the wonderful touches added by Rob and Layla - homemade cakes and beautiful flowers were very much appreciated additions to our stay. During our few days here, we spent peaceful evenings in front of the log burner, indulging in books, good food, wine and old fashioned conversation! The clear skies made the stars simply sensational and if we had been better at building fires we would have definitely utilised the roll top bath too! Especially after a tiring but scenic day of walking. The bus was also close enough to civilisation to offer easy access to some great pubs and local amenities whilst also remote enough to feel like an idyllic private retreat. It is safe to say that we enjoyed every moment!

"Stay was lovely and relaxing, the accommodation was very clean and comfortable as well as different and interesting, and the hosts were very welcoming"

"This was for a short weekend break to celebrate my partners 40th birthday (without the kids!). Having used Canopy and Stars on several occasions we knew roughly what to expect but were delighted by the ambience of the place, the comfort and the uniqueness. We enjoyed two relaxing nights with a warm fire and the whole weekend was amazing in a completely isolated location"

"The stay was perfect. The owners were very welcoming and friendly but equally gave us privacy during our stay. The accommodation was amazing and worked perfectly as a place for a few friends to chill out and catch up by a warming fire and under a starry night sky"

"We arrived on a very bleak afternoon. It was extremely misty because the Majestic bus is so high up in the mountains, but it created a very ambient and atmospheric scene. The ruins and twisted trees in the fog resembled a film scene, and at the top of the hill, we could see the bus. It looked lonely with its chimney smoking away all by itself, and we were uncertain upon arrival. The second we stepped onto the bus I knew it was going to be a good experience. From the quirky ornaments and fairy lights, to the uniqueness of the accommodation itself, with its steering wheel, indicator switches, wood burner and beds. Rob came to greet us with a couple of wine glasses and the Majestic quickly became home. The bathroom facilities were an experience in themselves, a log cabin with a roll top bath, roaring wood burner, candles and bizarre black cat decoration reminiscent of the nearby and somewhat eerie Hay on Wye. I felt like I was in Transylvania beautiful, glorious morning sunshine could be interrupted in the blink of an eye by a thick mist as the clouds engulfed the craggy mountainous peaks we were living in. It was extremely isolated too, but none the less an absolutely fantastic surprise and an amazing getaway that I'd love to revisit again soon. The milky ways belt would glow like a faint cloud at night due to the lack of light pollution and the stars were out in force. It was a wonderful trip I won't forget"

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the quirky Majestic.  There were 5 of us on board, which at times was a little crowded, but great fun too!  The purpose built bathroom with log fire and free standing bath was lovely - such a luxury to bath with the stars!  We only met with the owners briefly when we arrived but knew they were around if we needed any help or guidance."

"Welcome excellent

Walking excellent

Seclusion excellent

Accommodation excellent

All other aspects I can think of - excellent

First task on arriving home - booked for longer stay next year"

"A brilliant weekend. The weather was perfect so that we were able to sit outside until late each night and the bbq newly provided by our hosts was used twice.  The bus was amazing, very comfortable, beautifully fitted out and very cosy when the log burner was in action.  The washroom facilities were also great and again made even better by the log burning stove. A lovely location and beautiful countryside."

Yes, it was a great experience and absolutely fantastic place to stay and relax. The owners couldn't do enough for us. The best thing was staying in such an unusual place and taking a bath in the fabulous roll top bath looking at the countryside surroundings. There was nothing negative at all to say about our stay."

Meet your hosts

Filming the Majestic Bus

Rob & Layla have been at their place since 2007. They started the venture in order to supplement their income in a way that suits their lifestyle with a young family as well as giving people a chance to see the area they live in the way that they do themselves. They are completely off-grid and have not allowed the bus to impact on that at all. Much of their land is used to grow seasonal cut flowers for Layla's business, and you might find a couple waiting for you in the bus if the time is right.

The bus is located in a private and peaceful setting, in an elevated but sheltered location down a track and far from busy roads. They have some magnificent views across glorious rolling countryside and back across Herefordshire. You're able to have a real sense of having your own camp as there are no other units on site. They abundance of cut flowers and vegetables growing on site are a painters/photographers dream. The whole property is off-grid with solar panels to power the bus and the whole area is teaming with wildlife including red kites, all sorts of birds of prey, hedgehogs, hares, stoats and even a barn owl which Rob & Layla hope will take up residence.

Getting there

Penycastell , whitney on wye ,Hereford, HR3 6HW

By public transport

The nearest train station is  Hereford, about 20 miles away. The nearest bus station is Hay on Wye, about 6 miles away. Rob & Layla cannot pick you up, but taxis can be arranged.

By car

Get to Clyro on the A438 near Hay on Wye and drive into the village (opposite side of the road to the petrol station). Take the road signposted Newchurch and go up the hill. It's a left off the main road and then a quick right, both signposted Newchurch. Stay on this road on a fairly constant rise for about 3 miles.

Look out for a white cottage on the right where there is a right turn signposted Rhydspence. DON`T take this turn but carry on up the road and go past Clyro hill farm before taking the next right which is not signposted.

Go down this road and go straight over the crossroads, proceed down this road for about 1 mile and you will come to track on left to Bush Farm and, opposite this is Rob & Layla's track on the right over a cattle grid. Go down this track which is quite bumpy in places (keep left on the way down for a smoother ride).  Their place is on the right and you'll be able to see the bus just above you up the hill. The parking spot is just below it.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
