A horticultural paradise near the Welsh border, home to a yurt-and-shepherd's-hut pair that you'll have all to yourself

Between Hay and Hereford, Midland Farm quietly blossoms. There's no guests except yourselves but in every other aspect, variety is the key: you are both ‘under canvas’ and ‘on wheels’ at this eclectic space. Centred around an impressively large bed - a French antique - the authentic Mongolian yurt is for sleeping, and is jazzed up with beautiful Indian throws and rugs. Two single beds sleep kids or friends. Next door, the shepherd’s hut houses a red and cream vintage chic kitchen with a retro fifties sink, and a plumbed in bathroom. Children can collect fresh eggs from the hens, home-baked bread and vegetables are on hand, and the private little garden on your doorstep perfect for a summer picnic or barbecue.

The gorgeous gardens that surround you have been featured on the cover of the Royal Horticultural Society magazine, and open to the public a couple of times a year. Sarah’s small plant nursery, the sheep, horses, free-range chickens, and Walter the duck together bring Midland Farm to life, so you won't feel lonely at this lovely spot.

Our guests say...

Fabulous stay, warm cosy reception with cute homemade cakes. Gorgeously decorated yurt and shepherds hut with everything g you could need, and plenty of wood to get the stove toasty.

We loved it. When we arrived we were shown around and given a little briefing on things to use etc. They instantly made us feel welcome and if we needed anything to not hesitate to come and ask. It was soon clear that Charlie and Sarah had been quite thoughtful in providing for their guests as anything we couldve possibly needed, was there i.e kitchen utensils, towels etc. Also they left us a little gift of some brownies and some fresh eggs to welcome us. The yurt was just awesome. So comfortable and cosy and the shepherds hut was a brilliant addition and provided plenty of space for facilities. The log burner went down a treat and made it all the more cosy. There was a good amount of privacy too as we were allowed to come and go as we pleased and never for once felt like we were being monitored. We did have regular visits from the sheep, chickens and Henry the Cat which we enjoyed. The views and presentation was excellent. A blissfully relaxing and amazing experience. Thank you.

It was gorgeous. Lovely place to stay in a beautiful location.

It was a peaceful cosy place to stay. Sarah and Charles were perfect hosts, always there when needed but not overbearing. The chicken and cat were very friendly!

It was the perfect location for relaxation.

The location of Midland farm was perfect, very quiet and beautiful. Unfortunately we didn't enjoy ourselves as much as hoped as our youngest son had a sickness bug. Sarah was lovely, she arrived with freshly baked cake and even offered to wash the sicky clothes. Considering we were away from home with a sick child we managed very well with the fully equipped kitchen and local shop not far away. The wood burner was a godsend and the yurt really was rather cosy. The boys enjoyed egg collecting in the morning and playing games by candle/lamplight at night. Just what we needed for a total escape from our rather busy lives. We will definitely be back, hopefully without a poorly child.

Lovely stay. Location was beautiful, nice to be on a farm, my daughter loved the horses and chickens. Yurt and cabin were both well equipped and despite cold weather we were kept warm. Would definitely recommend for families wanting to get away from it all but still have some creature comforts (hot showers, toys for children, well equipped kitchen).

We had a fantastic few nights at Midland Farm, the location setting and accommodation was more than expected, we loved the roaming chickens and visits from the horses. The yurt was beautiful and cozy and the shepherds Hut which housed the kitchen, shower and toilet were perfect we really had a fantastic time.

This was a school friends get to-gether and it was perfect for getting away from tv, emails and chilling out, having a catch up.

Lovely couple of nights in an amazing place. Loved the vintage feel to the décor. Enjoyed having our clutch of feathered friends visit every morning. Would recommend.

We spent two lovely days at Midland Farm exploring Hereforshire. My daughter adored the animals and I oarticulalry enjoyed the gardens

Midland Farm was everything we could wish for for a weekend get away. The yurt was amazing and with all the mod cons in the cabin next door, we were more comfortable than any hotel or park we have previously stayed in. The children loved it and the surroundings were fantastic - waking up to beautiful countryside, horses, chickens and fresh eggs in the morning was bliss. The hosts were wonderful and so accomodating. It really was 'glamping' at its best and we hope to visit again in the near future.

Loved the peace and quiet and the fact that we were left alone. Good bathroom and kitchen facilities. Toast warm yurt. Very comfortable bed.

What a wonderful break! The hosts were helpful, friendly, and always on hand if my wife and I needed any help. The weather could not have been any better; beautiful sunshine by day, and lovely clear, crisp skies by night. The log burner in the yurt created a warm atmosphere, which Henry, the owner's Cat, also enjoyed with us. Spending each morning eating breakfast with the chickens was the icing on the cake.

Stay was amazing, so peaceful and relaxing. Was wonderful to be surrounded by the animals and to have everything to hand 5hst was needed. The owners were amazing and couldn't do enough to help and inform. They were there if needed but never intruding.

Absolutely loved our stay, the yurt was gorgeous very detailed and personal, we had everything we needed and the owners were so pleasant and friendly and the area & location was amazing could not fault it!! Friends have already asked for details and we will be recommending to others, we certainly want to return again : )

We had an amazing weekend in the lovely yurt. Perfect peace and tranquillity surrounded by nature.

A wonderful spot to unwind and relax. Unfortunately it rained solidly so we're a bit 'yurt bound' but with plenty of space, comfortable beds, and lots of wood for the stove we were fine. The kitchen is good size, and had all we needed to cater comfortably. The views over the fields towards the Brecon Beacons are amazing and when the sun did come our briefly we were able to use the sun deck which was lovely, with loungers, a chimenea and quality table and chairs. The chickens often popped by looking for scraps which was a a welcome trade for their fresh eggs that we were given in the morning. All in, a really well maintained, clean and tidy location in an amazing part of world that made a very enjoyable second stop on our honeymoon

we were welcomed warmly, beautiful setting, well equipped comfortable and really beautifully decorated yurt and shepherd's hut. We had the most restful enjoyable three days at Midland Farm and are very grateful to our hosts for providing such a peaceful, beautiful environment.

"We had an absolutely amazing stay - it was magical. Lovely people and super location."

"I would recommend it to anyone looking for something different. Believe it or not the Chickens came one morning and left us 2 eggs."

"It was our first time 'glamping', I was suprised at the level of comfort. Everything was perfectly set out and looked gorgeous. Our hosts were also lovely and very accommodating. We took our 9 month old baby and she loved it... Especially all of the chickens coming to say hello at dinner times. We've now decided to make glamping our regular anniversary trip. :) Exceeded my expectations. More comfortable than I expected, with all the things you would expect when booking a self catering holiday but with the added bonus of feeling more like camping and being in touch with nature."

"We absolutely loved Midland Farm. The yurt was beautifully presented, very spacious and well equipped. We had everything we needed & finding a loaf of bread, milk, teabags & coffee in our kitchen was a lovely surprise. The owners were extremely welcoming and approachable and the chickens were great too. We also took up a couple of recommendations & went pony trekking & visited The Stagg for dinner. Both recommendations were spot on - we had the best time."

"We enjoyed the stay very much and would willingly go back there again. Beautiful setting and everything you could wish for provided."

"We had a fantastic time at Midland Farm.  Even though the yurt and shepherd's hut aren't too far from the main house and just off the drive, it felt secluded and private.  We were kept toasty warm by the wood burning stove (which was lit for our arrival) even though the weather wasn't fantastic.  The yurt is decorated in a wonderful country chic style which we loved, and had all the comforts we could ask for and more (including electricity to the yurt) to make our first glamping experience a great one!  The shepherd's hut was a luxury - having a fully stocked kitchen and place to have a lazy long breakfast each morning while overlooking the farm was fabulous.  We were even provided with yummy fresh bread and eggs from their chickens, and a box of chocolates as a gift (we booked the holiday for our anniversary) - what a lovely surprise.  The flowers were a nice touch too.  We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and didn't at all mind being woken by the resident roosters and chickens as they clucked around the yurt of a morning!  We ventured into nearby Hay and explored the town and spent some time driving around the local countryside, stopping off at a number of pretty villages on the way - a perfectly chilled and peaceful break. We've been recommending it to our friends since we got back home and a few have already booked their own break at Midland Farm!"

"Our first time glamping, our weekend break surpassed expectation. It was a very different and fun experience but with a lot of comfort!"

"Fantastic! Peace and tranquility. Being woken by the roosters each morning and the quaintness of the yurt and shepherds hut."

"Our stay was wonderful! Beautiful weather and warm friendly hosts. The Yurt was lovely inside and the views were great. We loved the farm yard feel and the noises of the chickens in the morning. It was particularly great as it was the weekend my partner and I got engaged! Its very special to us now and we will definitely be returning. The only one tiny eany weany thing that would have been nice, was a bit of milk and some teabags on arrival. We bought some from the local shop. It really wasn't a big problem though, as tea lovers - it would have been nice."

"The yurt itself was beautiful, a really lovely and cosy space for relaxing and forgetting about the real world for a couple of days. There wasn't really a worst point, maybe the chickens waking up very early in the morning next to the yurt, but then it is advertised as being a smallholding with livestock. I don't think you can have grounds to complain about chickens making noise when you go to stay on someone's farm!"

"We had a wonderful time. The owners were really friendly and welcoming, arranging a pony ride for my daughter and advising on canoeing trips. The yurt was extremely comfortable and attractively decorated and the setting was beautiful."

Places to visit

Hay on Wye is well worth a visit with its many book shops, market and of course it plays host to the Hay Festival every year. The Courtyard at Hereford is a great arts centre for plays, cinema and exhibitions. Check the website to see what’s on. The gastro market town of Ludlow is only slightly further away, and is a must with its lovely shops and restaurants. They say Ludlow has more Michelin stars than any other town in the UK. Weobley village (the nearest outpost of civilisation with a shop and post office!)  is on the Black & White trail.

If you want to venture slightly further afield  (approx. 40 mins by car) are the Malvern Hills, and of course the delightful town of Malvern itself.

Berrington Hall

Croft Castle

Cwmmau Farmhouse

Outdoor & Active (walks, watersports)

Herefordshire has plenty to offer anyone keen on some fresh air. There are more miles of public footpath in Herefordshire than roads. You can see the ridge of Crib-y-Garth (locally known as the Cat's Back) at the foot of the black mountains from the top of Calver Hill at the back of Midland Farm, so probably no better place to start exploring the terrain. It's gentle going as you follow it north/north-west, joining Offa's Dyke path near Hay Bluff. After taking in the truly magnificent views, it's then downhill all the way, following a "green lane" path which just happens to pass a charming country pub called The Bull at Craswall - well worth a stopover - before making your way back to the car.

Offa’s Dyke is a subject on its own, best see the web site at for full details.

The Brecon Beacons are easily accessible too. Maps available in the Yurt to plan a hearty day our up Pen y Fan (the highest peak).

One of the great attractions for many visitors to the area, there are several companies that hire kayaks or canoes and also offer lessons and trip out for the inexperienced family.  Here are links to two:  and

A wonderful day out for lovers of wildlife too, as the Wye is home to many species of birds and mammals including otters.

A wonderful way of exploring this lovely countryside..  There are many trekking centres in and around this area that cater for riders of all levels of ability. We likeBrwyngwyn Riding Centre

Food & Drink

At Midland Farm

Oakchurch or Weobley are the nearest shops  – both about 15 mins drive.

By prior arrangement, Sarah will be delighted to provide dinner on arrival or at any other time during your stay.

Pubs & restaurants

The Stagg Inn at Titley was the first pub in England to gain a Michelin star.  Its only 15 mins drive from Midland Farm, and is a great evening destination for a treat.

Just the other side of Hay is The Griffin at Felin Fach.   Cath Urquhart, Travel Editor, The Times said "You know there's something special about the place the minute you crest the hill." It’s a great pub posh grub mix, we love it.

For top value and a friendly welcome for families we strongly recommend The Tram ( ) at Eardisley. It has excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, and we strongly agree !

Further afield a good destination is Simmonds Yat and a delicious lunch awaits at The Mill Race at Walford ( ). Gastro Pub Of the Year in 2009.

Then there is The Talbot at Knightwick, where Nigel Slater began his career.

The gastro market town of Ludlow is only a stone’s throw away and is a must with its lovely shops and restaurants.

Hay on Wye is also well worth a visit and has much to offer in the way of places to eat, really good Indian there on the corner.

Meet your hosts

Sarah & Charlie were living in France 5 years ago and Sarah made a flying visit back to the UK to look at some likely properties for their return.  The first house she saw was Midland Farm and she bought it on the spot. The location is the thing that persuaded Sarah to take the plunge. Tucked away with uninterrupted view towards the Wye, Hay Bluff and the Cats Back (see things to do for explanation), Midland Farm provides a romantic setting.

The garden at Midland Farm has been featured on the front cover in the Royal Horticultural Society magazine ‘The Garden’.  It is open under the NGS scheme twice a year, and is pictured on the front cover of this year’s NGS’s directory. Growing fruit and veg is a passion, and guests are welcome to order produce during their stay. They also have an abundance of very happy hens who produce the most wonderful eggs that are often available for breakfast. Sarah also offers homemade bread, lunch hampers and dinner by pre arrangement.

Wildlife & the environment

Sarah and Charlie have plenty of their own wildlife, optimistically called pets, so guests should expect to meet and hear them all. To date the roll call consists of Daisy the Jack Russell, Flyn the Border Terrier, Sophie the cat who was brought back from France, two ponies Frodo and Sam (Sam’s from France too), six chickens (number tends to vary!), Walter the Cayuga duck (fluorescent in the sunlight, quite magnificent), and very often sheep in the field next to the yurt. There's a pond where Walter likes to dabble, which is often home to frogs, newts and the occasional moorhen. There is a rookery in a nearby wood, and they provide quite a magical display at dusk. You can often hear owls hooting round you at night, we have swans and geese flying overhead in the evening, plus any number of small birds. Letton Lakes nearby is an RSPB sanctuary with some rare species.

Getting there

Midland Farm, Norton Wood HR4 7BP

By public transport

The nearest bus and train station are both Hereford.

By car

Take the A480 out of Hereford heading west. This will take you past the SAS headquarters (on your left) at Credenhill. After about 6 miles you will pass through Yazor. 2 miles past Yazor you will see a turning on your right to Weobley, go straight past that turning. About 500m further on take the turning on the left sign posted to Norton Canon and the church.

This is a single track road. Carry on for about 3 miles and you will see a white house on the left hand side of the road called New House Farm.  There is a gated track that runs down the side of the house that leads to Midland Farm. If you key the postcode ( HR4 7BP)  into the sat nav it usually comes up with Pig Street, which is fine, just look out for New House Farm (see above).

From the West:

Get onto the A4112 heading east towards Leominster.

As you go through Kinnersley you will see the church on your right.  Just before the church take the single lane track sign posted to Norton Wood and Hurstley,.

Go down there for approx. 3 miles and you will see a white house on the right hand side of the road called New House Farm .  Immediately past the house is a gated track on your right leading to Midland Farm.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

16. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.
