A unique Victorian gamekeeper’s hut for two, bookable on its own or with the Shepherd’s Rest next door

One of two beautifully-restored huts on wheels in Westfield Farm’s tranquil sheep meadow, the Victorian Gamekeeper’s Hut was once in use on the nearby estates. It lives up to its heritage with old photos, fishing tackle, shooting stick and wooden decoy ducks. Squashy cushions are made from old linen grain sacks, and there’s even the Victorian Gamekeeper’s handcuffs for any unsuspecting poacher!

You can fall asleep gazing the stars, transported back to a time when life went at a slower pace. You might spot a barn owl - and will be able to hear one for sure, in the calm and quiet of the serene north Norfolk countryside. Both huts have their own posh wash cabins just a stone’s throw away with flushing loos and showers. New for this season is an indoor rustic kitchen in the barn, with a huge stone sink, and lamp shades made from old milk pails.

At Norfolk Courtyard, home of The Gamekeeper’s Hut and The Shepherd's Rest
A 30-40 minute personal tour pre-booked with Simon, the owner (cost £25) can include lighting up the original shepherd’s horn lanterns (which give a sulphur yellow glow). The tour takes in their impressive private collection of shepherding bygones and rural artifacts and introduces you to the stories behind them. It gives a glimpse into rural life 100-150 years ago and explains why the shepherd was the highest paid of all farm workers. Meet your hosts

The owners

Simon and Catherine moved to Westfield Farm about eight years ago. The house and grounds were so run down when they arrived that it was a few years of constant labour before they managed to transform it into something truly special and begin their B&B business, to which The Shepherd's Rest has just been added. By moving to the farm, Simon had wanted to give his children something of the experience he had had growing up on a smallholding and the evidence of his love for all things rural is everywhere. This has led, over many years, to Simon amassing one of the best collections of shepherding artifacts and memorabilia in the country. The hut itself, in fact, is part of this collection and decorated with original items from it too.

Wildlife & the environment

Westfield Farm is in a conservation area and near to Foxley Woods (some of the oldest natural woodland in the country). There are resident Barn Owls and Tawny owls, and Little Owls are often seen. For the last two years, breeding pairs of Spotted Flycatchers have been seen too.

Aside from the extensive preservation of history on the site, Simon and Catherine have done their best to keep their footprint on their land down with the installation of ground source heat pumps in the barns and water treatment plants.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

We had a lovely time here! It was so peaceful and relaxing. The facilities were lovely and just enough to help you with meal time and staying fresh!

We had an amazing stay in the Gamekeeper's hut! The hut was very cosy and comfortable and having the barn to make meals and a cup of tea was great. We loved being surrounded by nature and wildlife and seeing a blanket of stars over us in the evening. The farm is in a good location and so we were able to visit Holt, Holkham and go on a seal watching boat trip. We only met our host, Simon, once but he was friendly and gave us a nice welcome and good overview of the area. This was for our 2nd wedding anniversary and it was one of the best weekends we'd ever experienced given its uniqueness and being in the outdoors.

Lovely place! Simon was a wonderful host, and the hut is absolutely beautiful. Area is perfect for roaming and hanging out too. Highly recommend and would even go back.

The but was very comfortable and easy to keep warm. The kitchen was charming and well equipped. Our hosts were very welcoming and took good care of us.

Great couple of days. The kitchen facilities were very good and the host Simon very helpful. He told us about nearby places to visit which was good.

Very pleasant setting, the owner was very chatty and helpful and the amenities were very good. The little Gamekeepers Hut was very cozy with a tiny wood burner which warmed it up really well.

"Loved it. Son (2yrs) really enjoyed being around all the nature. Particularly Rod the Rooster! Hosts were lovely. Gave us our space but were always on hand with advice if we needed it."

"The stay was absolutely fantastic. The Gamekeeper's Hut was absolutely charming and the setting was peaceful. The facilities were absolutely brilliant. It was a really magical stay."

"It was lovely. Great hosts. Beautiful setting. Lived up to the description and expectations 100%"

"We loved it! Far exceeded our expectations. The huts were beautifully presented and the owners had thought of everything you could possibly need! Peace and quiet! Beautiful setting and a cracking local serving great food. Cannot think of any improvements! It is very clear the amount of work that the owners put into this business as the attention to detail was great they have thought of everything possible to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Thank you very much."

"Enjoyed it very much.  The location was absolutely beautiful, we were very lucky with the weather. We stayed in the gamekeeper's hut which was charming.  We had use of the barn kitchen which was rustic and lovely, and we shared the field with the chickens and ducks from the farm, who were delightful company! The surrounding area provided loads to do and see.  The owners were extremely friendly and gave us some great tips on where to go.  A great weekend."

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
