Lower Buckton Country House

Not suitable for children

Pets welcome

Children cannot be accommodated at Millstream Camp, but pets are welcome as long as they do not enter the hut

A homely site in a foodie’s paradise. Take one of Carolyn’s cooking courses or swim in the dammed Millstream...

This charmingly ramshackle camp consists of two very different spaces that go together to make a lovely self-contained escape. The shepherd’s hut serves as the sleeping quarters and the tipi, decked out with old Indian saris, dining table and parasol makes a great day space as well as for extra storage. As well as the chairs in the tipi to lounge around on, you also have the log stools around the firepit and an outdoor seating area by the stream. Lower the tin bucket into the water and put a good bottle of white in to cool. On occasion, in hot weather, the stream is dammed at the mill to create a natural bathing pool.

Food and cooking are an essential part of a Millstream camp holiday. Carolyn runs some great cookery courses on site and tours of local producers, called “food safaris”, with ample opportunity for snacking. And Carolyn’s dinners and breakfasts are something else. Take a look at “eating and drinking” or “local activities” for details. Back at the camp you can use the BBQ and open fire pit with its kotlich (Serbian cooking pot) to hone the skills from the course or put the spoils of the safari to use.

Henry has a vegetable garden and Carolyn can arrange a stash of local produce for your arrival, but if you run out of the essentials, the village of Leintwardine is a lovely half hour walk away along the riverside. The hut is stocked with magnifying glasses, local wildlife guides and a specimen case, so the walk, like most things at Lower Buckton, can become an adventure.

Food & Drink

Carolyn's Cooking!

Delicious meals up at the house, cooked by Carolyn herself, can be booked at any time at a rate of £15 per head for breakfast and £35 per head for dinner. Breakfast baskets and supper hampers for DIY cooking can also be supplied.

Carolyn has won many awards for her country breakfasts which are cooked to order and where overcooked baked beans and out-of-season tomatoes will not be found! Her dinners are delicious and are produced entirely from local ingredients. Her dinners are delicious and are produced entirely from local ingredients with lots of vegetables straight from the kitchen garden. The menu always follows the seasons and everything is sought and caught at Lower Buckton or bought from local, independent farms, growers and producers, supporting the local community and economy.

There may even be a Lower Buckton cookery course or 'Food Safari' taking place - just ask Carolyn when you book. And you can take part in a cookery course or a 'food safari'. If you're camp-fire cooking there's loads of local produce to be had - ask about having the hut pre-stocked for your arrival. Pots of herbs grow all around the camp, house and gardens and there is veg to be had from the garden, surplus permitting.

Pubs, restaurants & cafés

The river-side walk to The Sun Inn, Leintwardine takes half an hour and can be undertaken with or without Copper the dog as a guide. Hugely popular with Millstream guests is the opportunity to get fantastic fish & chips from the Fiddlers Elbow Fish Bar next door shop to eat in the pub: a match made in heaven!

The Jolly Frog is just out of Leintwardine and serves a feast of fish in the French style and The Lion is on the riverside with gardens, restaurant and bar snacks.

Tea rooms

Favourites for morning coffees, light lunches and afternoon teas:

Aardvark Books, Brampton Bryan (1 mile) - Just down the lane, Aardvark Books are a definite first port of call for all guests at Millstream Camp. It's a surprisingly large bookshop and café in old converted barns in the depths of the countryside, with a fantastic selection of books, a fine array of teas and coffees and, most importantly, delicious homemade cakes.

A foray into Ludlow is a must and there's the famous Michelin starred restaurant, Mr Underhill's (make a reservation well in advance). For an excellent alternative, head below the castle down to Dinham bridge and the Millenium Green beside the River Teme to the excellent Green Cafe. The menu uses seasonal, locally sourced produce. The chef Clive Davis, like Carolyn, was a Slow Food Terra Madre Chef and they both derive much of their ethos in the kitchen from the aims and objectives of Slow Food.

Another favourite is The Cicchetti Bar in Broad Street - little bit of Venice in Ludlow.

For other recommendations for dinner or drinks, please ask for Carolyn and Henry's current favourites.

Outdoor & active

Walkers and cyclists alike are spoilt for choice here, with Hopton woods 5 miles up the road. There are national standard race tracks for those chasing the fear factor and for those who prefer to spend their holidays in a more relaxing manner, there are plenty of quiet trails in 1000 acres of Forestry Commission countryside. The Herefordshire Trail, which goes on to link with theMortimer Trail, runs right past the house. Offa's Dyke is a more famous and dramatic walking path, just 7 miles away with absolutely breathtaking views.

The River Teme is just at the end of the garden and is well stocked with trout, grayling, barbem and eels for a spot of fishing where permits allow. Or spend a day steeplechasing from the tiny Heath Chapel set in a field to cathedral-like St Laurence's Church in Ludlow.

The Land of Lost Content is the national museum of British popular culture that can be found a 20 minute drive away in Craven Arms. It is an opportunity to step back in time and discover everything you, your parents, grandparents, sons and daughters owned, used, played with and threw away. Open daily except Wednesdays.

The gardens in the grounds of Hampton Court Castle, half an hour drive away, are definitely worth a visit. Adjacent to the castle is the Orangery Café set in a large conservatory which uses produce from the kitchen garden to lay on an excellent seasonal menu. During the summer months, travelling outdoor theatre groups perform such classics as Beauty and the Beast, Pride and Prejudice and Shakespeare.

Leintwardine, a nearby village, is home to The Sun Inn. Listed by English heritage for its national interest, it is one of the last remaining parlour pubs in Britain. Despite the longest standing owner passing away last year the locals have kept this establishment running, where customers sit on wooden benches in the front room and beer (the only alcohol on offer) is served from barrels on the kitchen floor. Bring your own fish & chips from just up the road.

All the tours place a gloriously heavy emphasis on sampling and include a full lunch and a goody bag of various edible bits and pieces, if you can possibly find room for them.

Meet your hosts

river teme

Already famous on the Food Tourism trail, Henry and Carolyn Cheshire’s cooking is the starring attraction here. If you wish to improve your culinary skills or simply sit back and enjoy, Carolyn’s love for locally sourced produce and her award-winning breakfasts never fail to please. Everything is either home-grown and made by Carolyn and Henry or locally sought, bought and caught from small-scale farmers, producers and growers. With local game from the woods, meat from the neighbouring farmers and Lower Buckton's own year-round productive kitchen garden of herbs, vegetables and fruit, Carolyn and Henry work hard to ensure that Lower Buckton is a multinational supermarket free zone!

If you are lucky, your trip may coincide with one of the 'food safaris' - a fantastic day out in which you take a leisurely tour of the local shires sampling culinary delights. The day courses are planned around a theme to suit the time of year and ingredients available.

From the house are uninterrupted views for miles of farmland, woodland, forests and beyond the horses' paddocks are glimpses of the River Teme meandering its way to Ludlow just ten miles downstream.

If you manage to prise yourself away from the table, Lower Buckton is the gateway to some of the most tranquil, beautiful and unspoilt countryside in England and Wales. Footpaths and bridleways for walking, riding and cycling in Mortimer forest are the perfect scenery in which to while away the days after those hearty breakfasts. Discover and explore ancient surrounding towns including Ludlow, Leominster and Bishops Castle with cobbled streets and gabled houses steeped in history.

Spoilt for choice with walks, idyllic villages and historical monuments, in the evening you might just want to relax at the camp with a glass of wine by the stream listening to the birds. With virtually no 'light pollution' it is the perfect spot to watch the clear night skies.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

From the minute we were welcomed by Carolyn and Henry and shown to our own private camp site our break just got better. We had supper at the house that night and met some nice people who were staying there, Carolyn cooked and Henry was our host and waiter. Monday it rained but a visit to Ludlow kept us busy and by the time we returned the rain had stopped.and we had stew cooked over the fire pit and a bath heated by logs under the stars. Wine, good food and a wind up radio you couldn't want for anything more, apart from a bed for a good nights sleep under a ba ba duvet which was in the shepherds hut which was lovely and cosy. Every morning we woke to three beautiful horses in the adjoining paddock and a flask of tea dropped off by Carolyn and Henry. Tuesday we visited Much Wenlock and Ironbridge both places well worth checking out. Then that night we ate in the sun inn in Leintwardine with fish and chips from the local chippy. A perfect end before we had to pack up and return home.

"Fabulous. Carolyn and Henry were the Consummate hosts - attentive but discreet, and exceptionally thoughtful. The camp was superb - totally secluded, right next to a small stream, outdoor shower, and a wonderful outdoor bath heated with logs. Truly relaxing, truly luxurious and highly recommended"

"Absolutely fabulous. Week worn and jaded we needed a complete change. You have to think differently without electricity and the challenge of cooking over an open fire was so rewarding and such good fun. The shepherd's hut was cosy each evening with the log fire burning. A good novel, a chance to chat and the birdsong alarm was superb and the flask of tea delivered to the door each morning, a delightful touch. Carolyn and Henry were wonderful hosts, always there to help, advise or inspire and Shropshire is such a beautiful county. Highly recommended! Even the compost loo!"

Dave & Barbara

"We really enjoyed the stay, we had gone away at the end of October for my partner's birthday. The time away was amazing, not only did we feel like we had a private space to spend time but one of the real highlights was being able to cook on the open fire during our stay. It was amazing to spend a day outside and then return to cook a beef stew on the fire (go to the Ludlow Food Centre to get the meat). Of course, the bath under the stars was idyllic, even at the end of October the bath generated enough heat to keep us toasty warm. Being able to run across to the Shepherd's hut and warm up meant there was none of the uncomfortable, cold nights which can sometimes be associated with camping.   If you go you simply must have a food hamper by Henry and Carolyn; all freshly prepared food ready to cook on the open fire. Wonderful.  The local area is wonderful - Ludlow castle is a must as is a bracing walk along Offa's Dyke.   A highly recommended location."

"Amazing truly amazing we never realised how fantastic it is to cook outside  over a fire pit it was so simple yet so effective and much better than a barbecue. Then lighting another fire under the open air cast iron to bathe under the stars was bliss.I'm sure the weather helped but we have not enjoyed ourselves so much for years. We will certainly be going again."

"It was a magical few days. The snuggly shepherd's hut, cooking a stew an open fire, having a bath surrounded by candles and hearing owl hoots. All new experiences for me and my boyfriend and felt very back to basics even though we had the comfort of a bed and not a canvas tent! The surroundings were lovely; seeing birds of prey in the sky, sheep in the field and the wonderful stream running around our 'home'."

"The stay was fantastic, glamping at its best. The shepherds hut was stylish and cosy and bathing under the stars so romantic. The hosts were great and the dinner was superb. Can't recommend it highly enough for a romantic break."

"The camp was all we expected and much much more, the lovely local Shropshire village Clun being the best, it's like life should be like, a special mention to the local pub though, the Sun Inn, super friendly, watched England game. The out door shower and lighting the camp fire, eating bacon and eggs on the open fire all great memories."

"We had an amazing stay. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome. Our dog made friends with the owners dog, which meant we could relax! It was perfect and even the sun came out! We will decently be returning."

"I took my girlfriend to Lower Buckton as a birthday surprise, and what a wonderful experience! Carolyn was an amazing host and took us on a wonderful food safari where we tasted some delicious charcuterie and slow roasted pork. The camp itself was lovely, well presented and full of character which is exactly what we wanted."

"I really enjoyed the hut it was warm, especially with the log burner going, and thoughtfully decorated. The setting is key to it all with a stream bubbling by, fields all around and being able to see the star clearly every night."

“We very much enjoyed our stay. Everything was delightful, it was one of the most lovely trips away ever.”

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

17. Discrepancies

18. Validity clause
