Buffalo Springfield Yurt - Shropshire, United Kingdom

Last cache: 12:27:57, Thursday 18 January 2018

Walcot Hall

  • Yurt for 2 from £65 per night (read our low price promise)
  • One double. A single camp bed can be added for one extra guest at a surcharge of £10 per night.

Suitable for children of all ages

Pets welcome

Both kids and pets are welcome

Go boating on the lake, explore the beautiful Walcot Arboretum and fish in the pools, or enjoy a spot of croquet in the gardens.

Hidden away on a grassy hillside, Buffalo Springfield Yurt is set a little back from the neighbouring Lake View Yurt but has equally spectacular views over the Shropshire hills and forests. It’s furnished with a wooden double bed, covered with cosy traditional furs, and comes with a private kitchen corner inside. Everything here has a quirky touch, from the surprisingly modern toilet in the quaint converted hen house, to the gas powered shower in the AA caravan, both shared with the neighbouring Crazy Horse Yurt - you may be sensing a theme here! Look out for the unusual features dotted around 30 acres of grounds and arboretum, including the giant 12ft wooden bear (although he’s not too hard to spot...). With a panorama of hill and forest before you, and everything thought of, you’re faced with one serious decision: to admire the view from the terrace, or the swing seat…?

Bring a fishing rod if you’d like to fish the tiddlers in the Arboretum pools, or on a clear day take one of the rowing boats out on the lake. Walcot Hall’s understandably popular for weddings, but if you have the picturesque gardens to yourself, try a spot of croquet on the lawn. .

Staying in the buffalo springfield yurt was truly blissful. Welcoming and very peaceful . Walcot Hall and the views are breath taking. The YURT was so cozy ,warm and well thought out. Not a car or tv sound mobiles or radio just natures natural tunes. The showers, kitchen and toilet were a lot nicer than I expected. The walks and surroundings and morning views are stunning we shall be booking again

"Because of a problem at crazy Horse Yurt we were given Buffalo Sringfield yurt instead. It was fantastic. An enclosed area with Kitchen hut, luxurious hot showers in the new shower cabin and of course the quirky old hen house loo. The yurt was warm with log burner (loads of logs), comfy bed and other essentials. The welcome was warm and everyone was helpful and friendly. We felt "at home" and our two dogs had a whale of a time. Historical countryside , the elegance of a truly English estate, magical secret corners to explore in the woods and arboretum and time to lounge in the comfort and warmth of the yurt
made our four days stay restful yet invigorating. There was something for everyone. A bit of being Bear Grylls for my husband . Freedom to run and investigate mole hills for the dogs, and for me, just sitting on the decking and watching the wild life whilst sipping some wonderful estate made apple juice was heaven."

Diana

Absolutely idyllic, our first time glamping and we shall definitely be going again! The yurt was beautifully equipped with rustic charm and everything we could need. Perfect break from the world.

Cath

"Loved my stay. Booked both yurts together for my friend and I with our dogs. Enclosed area so the dogs could run free. Very scenic, comfortable beds, lovely and warm with the log burners going in the evening. Area includes badminton net and table tennis. Toilet was excellent and the shower block was just being completed for the yurts which looked great. Didn't really see many people on the estate and it was a relaxing break with plenty of places to walk and explore."

Emma

"We had a fantastic stay that surpassed our expectations. The yurt as comfortable and clean, with the most stunning valley views. The log burner made the stay so cosy, and access to the toilet shed (shared with another yurt) made this a true glamping experience. The grounds are beautiful and worth exploring and the proximity let to towns like Church Stretton give a great combination of escapism and tourism. We are hoping to go back and also check out some other canopy and stars places for our honeymoon."

Jo

"We had a fantastic stay in the yurt. It was in the perfect location overlooking the Shropshire Hills. The yurt itself was very well equipped with quirky vintage decor and a great log burner for the cooler temperatures at night. Toilet in the hen shed was clean and to a high standard. The shower was warm but about a five min walk through the forest/gardens which was a bit difficult. However the shower facilities are being built beside the yurt at the moment to solve this problem! Lots of lovely villages to visit nearby and great spots for road/mountain biking."

Emma

"BF does not do glamour much, I (GF) does  not really do camping so this was a fantastic meeting in the middle in a wonderful location and for his birthday."

09/05/2014

Karen

"Loved it. I got engaged!!!! The dog loved having the freedom to run around. All in all a fantastic setting and a great weekend."

Activities

At Walcot Hall and nearby

There's the giant Arboretum for exploring, horse riding, fishing in the arboretum pools, walking and bike rides (there's an interesting selection of old bikes to borrow if you like). There's a selection of rowing boats that you can take out on the lake, and a croquet lawn that can be used as long as there's no wedding on.

In nearby Bishop's Castle there is a leisure centre with a swimming pool, squash courts, tennis courts and a play park for the kids.

Places to Visit

Shrewsbury (18 miles)

Church Stretton

If you have children, Acton Scott is a working Victorian Farm and is a great place to go - they teach you how to make butter and cheese, and you'll get to see and pet all the farm animals too!

Outdoor & Active

Walking - Walcot Hall is very close to the Long Mynd, Jack Myttons Way and the Offa’s Dyke path.

2 miles away in Bicton there is an outdoor adventure centre where you can go paintballing, build rafts and lots more. Advance booking is essential.

Food & Drink

Lydbury North has some small shops and there is a bigger Co-op and a butcher's in Bishops Castle, 3 miles away. Or in the other direction, there is a supermarket about 10 miles away in Craven Arms. There is also lots of good food and home made ales/beers in Bishop's Castle and Ludlow.

Pubs & Restaurants

The Powis Arms pub, just a short walk at the end of the main driveway, is under the ownership of Walcot Hall and serves wonderful home-cooked food and local ales.

Bishop’s Castle (3 miles away) has a good selection of pubs that serve great local ales and home made food. The Three Tunns or The Castle Hotel are both good choices, but do make sure they are booked in advance.

Ludlow is about 20 minutes away and has a lot more choice from pub grub, afternoon tea’s to fine dining. Try The Clive, Mr Underhill’s, Ludlow Food Centre restrant which has just opened and has been getting great reviews.

Meet your hosts

In 1956 the Woodbine Parishes bought Walcot from the Stevens and are still here! The Parish family have been at Walcot since 1957.  Robin spent his childhood here with his family.  In December 1997, Robin married Lucinda Rogers-Coltman and they have lived together at Walcot Hall since. They have four children, five dogs, a guinea pig, three horses, several chickens and a couple of ducks.  Arthur (12), George (11), Nancy (9) and Edward (7) all roam around fairly free-range.  They have grown up with the house being run as a business and not just a family home, so enjoy meeting and greeting new visitors to Walcot. Occasionally a guest might unwittingly come across them playing a game of hide and seek in the house, or stumble into one of their dens in the arboretum. The whole family hope that you will get as much pleasure from your visit to Walcot as they do living there and they invite you to share it with them.

In the arboretum there are peacocks and pheasants nesting. On the lake there is an amazing selection of  swans and other wildlife, and the lake is filled with carp, perch and tench. The two pools in the arboretum are filled with tiddlers which you are welcome to fish if you bring your own kit!

Getting there

Walcot Hall, Lydbury, North Shropshire, SY7 8AZ

By public transport

The nearest train station is Craven Arms and the nearest bus station is Lydbury North. There is a bus stop within walking distance.

By car

The entrance to Walcot Hall is

through the village of Lydbury-North (B4385). Some SatNavs will attempt to direct you to Walcot Farm. Please ignore this advice. Once in the village, you will see the Powis Arms public house, and the turning for Walcot Hall is just adjacent to this. The spaces at Walcot Hall are widely scattered so there can't always be someone on hand to check you in on arrival. Please bring these directions with you to help you find your accommodation. The lodge houses on the left on either side of the road to the rear of the house, is where the caretaker and housekeeper live. Please contact them if you have any concerns during your stay.

arry on along the driveway, go over the two lakes, pass a turning on your right, and take the next right hand turn which will take you up a steep bank until you reach a small car park with a gate. From the car park you will proceed on foot. Go through the gate and follow the path to the right, pass a boot tree on the right (a very unique tree with old shoes and boots stuck to it!), and keep going until you see a giant 12ft wooden bear on your right. Take the smaller footpath in front of the bear, which will lead you to the yurts. Crazy Horse Yurt is the first and Buffalo Springfield Yurt is the second.

Proceed along the drive, over the lakes and bear left at the fork in the road. Proceed to the top of the drive and over the cattle grid. Bear right and go through the clock tower you see in front of you. Park in the stable yard.  It is advisable to arrive in daylight as it is harder to find The Chapel in the dark. Go through the green double doors on the left hand side of the stable yard signposted Plassey, along the cobbled path and up the steps. Go through the gate and follow the woodchip path up until you see a path, go straight. Walk along the side of this up the bank.  You will see the Green Tin Chapel on your left.

Once in the village of Lydbury North you will see the Powis Arms public house. The road to Walcot Hall is adjacent to this. Proceed down the road, over the lake and turn left in the fork in the road for all apartments. To reach the Dipping Shed take the next right and then turn right again up the steep slope. You will see the Dipping Shed roof with the turquoise peaks on your right. Continue to the top of this track to the stone car park. Park here and continue on foot back down to your right, across the grass and through the heavy iron gateway. Carry on ahead, there is a path through the grass and you will come to the smaller gate leading into the Dipping Shed garden. Please make sure all gates are closed behind you as there are sometimes sheep in the fields. If arriving after dark please bring a torch as there are no outside lights and wellies are also useful if it has been wet.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise

Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
