Bella at Copper Beech Glade - Gypsy caravan in Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Last cache: 06:44:28, Monday 25 June 2018

Copper Beech Glade

Suitable for children of all ages

Not suitable for pets

Children are very welcome. Sorry no pets.

Across an arched stone river bridge and past a water mill, you’ll find Bella and her Gypsy caravan companions in a quiet glade

Bella, painted burgundy and cream, is the largest of the three Gypsy caravans at Copper Beech Glade, lovingly made over five painstaking years to fulfil her original owner’s dream of life on the open road. Inside, she’s full of pastel florals, varnished pine and traditional furnishings - there's a whole collection of horse brasses picked up over a lifetime of travel, as well as a solely decorative antique wood burner. You can make yourself a cup of cocoa in the log cabin, where you’ll find a fully-equipped modern kitchen to be shared with Carmen, the other full-sized Gypsy wagon. There’s also a shared compost loo, shower and campfire in the glade, but Bella’s two bench seats and table mean you can sit inside and have a glass of something when you want some time to yourself.

The historic Markington Hall has plenty of garden and woodland to make the most of. Just next to Copper Beech Glade is a lawn with everything you need for badminton, boules, football or a good old-fashioned game of croquet. The beck running nearby also offers plenty of fun for everyone, whether you want to fish for trout or just splash around. And at a handy distance from Harrogate, Thirsk and York, you've got a choice between day trips to the city and local museums and long walks on the wild moors of Bronte country.

Meet your hosts

Markington Hall is William and Julie's old family home, although they only recently moved back to start restoring it. It was left in disrepair after a long and interesting history - it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book as a fortified hunting lodge in the Forest of Knaresborough, and the house itself dates back to Tudor times. The hunting lodge which was sacked and burnt to the ground by the Scots in 1300, and the current building was built to replace it in approximately 1410, with the two wings added in the 17th- and 18th-centuries. Markington Hall has been in the Wilberforce family since 1731 and the current William is 4x great grandson of the abolitionist William Wilberforce. As well as The Hall, the property encompasses a 13th century tithe barn, coach house, mill, chapel and 5 acres of garden and woodland.

The Copper Beech Glade is part of a diversification programme to generate funds to continue the renovation works.

Wildlife & Environment

Markington Hall and the Copper Beech Glade are adjacent to farmland and nearby woods. Numerous examples of wildlife can be seen or have been sighted including otters, red kites, herons, bats, deer, tawny and screech owls, occasional barn owls and the area is rich in birdlife. The farmland has been incorporated in the EU ‘Higher Level Entry Scheme’ which provides protection, food and support for wildlife. As part of this scheme, pollen banks have been seeded, hedgerows replaced and woodland planted, and the work is ongoing.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

We had a really great time, made all the more special and easier thanks to the hospitality of William and Julie.

A weekend away in beautiful, serene surroundings. The restored caravan is just amazing a cozy. We spent evenings by the campfire but still had a table to sit at and somewhere safe for our little one to play in the cabin. The hosts were so caring and made sure we had everything we could possibly need. Lots of lovely things to do nearby. Perfect weekend away, would love to come back!

A magnificant and beautiful copper beach trees & other mature tress was our home. The gypsy caravan had a large comfy bed and was made warm by a small electric heater. We were cosy & comfortable for our two nights. There is separate dwelling for kitchen and hanging out space as well as quirky compost toliet, where if you wanted to you could open the top of the stable door to gaze at the wonderful view while doing your business. I could not have wished for a better space to meet up with darling after being apart for a month.

Thoroughly enjoyable - helped by fine weather! Julie is an excellent host.

The spot is beautiful and the log cabin is extremely well stocked with everything you could possibly need. William and Julie were very warm & friendly and made us feel very welcome. And the bed in the caravan was lovely and warm and comfortable. We loved our stay. Thank you.

Amazing! Lovely host perfect surroundings! Anything you could possibly want is there! Going back again soon

It was the best experience, magical, peaceful, relaxing. The hosts were brilliant and thought of everything

Beautiful place, wasn't sure if it would be too cold at this time of the year, but it really didn't matter, with heaters in the caravans and in the cabin as well as an easy to build fire and gas BBQ, there was plenty to keep us warm.

We had a magical time at Copper Beech Glade, it was great to have the chance to get away from it all. I loved cooking on the campfire, sitting by the river and the fact that you can do beautiful walks straight from the site. Will and Julie were warm and friendly hosts. It was the little touches that really make the place special.

We had a lovely stay at Copper Beach Glade. Julie, our host, was amazing - she had thought about absolutely everything and the details really added to the experience. It was lovely to sit by the fire and toast marshmallows, which were included in our welcome hamper. It was really nice to have a local host who could recommend local places to visit and eat.

We loved our time at Copper Beech Glade. We couldn't have been made to feel more welcomed, with a beautiful hamper on arrival and even a birthday cake for me to celebrate! Julie and William were wonderful hosts, attentive but also left us to our selves most of our stay so we could relax. The venue was perfect (especially as we had it all to our selves) and we loved cooking over the open fire, walking in the grounds and sleeping in our little caravan.

We had an absolutely beautiful stay at copper beech glade. It was such a magical, peaceful place. The setting was just perfect, with the campfire and the fairy lights and the flower-filled grounds. We spent our evenings playing board games and having barbecues and toasting marshmallows over the open fire. It was just so nice to shut off from the outside world and the technology that fills it and just completely enjoy eachothers company, without any interruptions or distractions. Bella was so cute and cosy, and the bed was so comfy! It was so nice to wake up to the sound of birds. We felt completely at home. Julie was so warm & welcoming & gave us all the information we needed. She had thought out everything and the attention to detail was just brilliant. From the welcome hamper with fresh bread, snacks and a lovely bottle of fizz to the fully stocked kitchen with all the tea, coffee and condiments that you would need. You literally just need to bring yourselves and everything else is catered for. There is a box of ball games, a great selection of board games and lots of books, and blankets if you would rather just sit outside and switch off and take in the lovely tranquil setting.

What a magical place, the trees, the birds, the sound of the river. We loved the little cosy Romany caravan and having a campfire in the evening. We were made to feel so welcome and the hampers and breakfast was awesome. Can't recommend this little gem of a place enough, so relaxing and special. Emma & David x x x

This place was amazing. So tranquil and peaceful. The pictures really do not do it any justice. It was beyond our expectations and truly deserves a visit. The hosts were faultless and had thought of everything. From a hamper on arrival to ensuring the kitchen was stocked up with tea, coffee, sugar, sauces, herbs, washing up liquid and shower gels to even a birthday cake and prosecco as an added surprise. The log cabin also had a cupboard full of games and a ippd docking station/radio. It really has been well thought out. The hosts go above and beyond to ensure you enjoy stay. We will most certainly be rearing for future weekends away. Xx

Arriving on Friday we lit up the camp fire in our glade and cooked campfire chilli which we ate with the delicious home made bread the owners had left for us. We sat and drank wine (also in the welcome basket) and watched the wildlife including a barn owl in the next field. The location is brilliant for places to visit so on the Saturday we headed over for a wander around Fountains Abbey and on the Sunday we wandered around Harewood House. We dined out on the Saturday night in Harrogate (just a twenty minute drive away).

We arrived at Copper Beech Glade late afternoon and were completely overwhelmed by the idyllic setting for our 3 gypsy caravans. They sheltered under a canopy of tall trees, so even when it rained a little, we stayed dry! We needn't have worried in any case as there was also a roomy wooden lodge to eat and hang out in, had the weather turned really wet. William and Julia had left us a very welcome 'welcome pack' with fresh bread, eggs, tea, coffee etc and there was plenty of room in the fridges for all the food we had brought with us. The highlight of our stay was being able to cook on the open camp fire and sit out in the evenings, under the stars. All the cooking equipment we needed was provided by our hosts as were cushions for the tree stump 'stools' which circled the camp fire. The gypsy caravans were surprisingly comfy and warm, with fresh bedding and heating in the caravans - we were truly spoilt! This was a magical experience which we would all like to repeat in the future!

Mrs J

It was lovely as Julie And William are very nice hosts. They are friendly and easy to talk to. The campsite is wonderful with clean and adequate facilities. We really enjoyed thr campfire and BBQ.

It was a great weekend away - just the break that we needed! Julie was an amazing host, who went above and beyond in every way possible. A gift basket on arrival was a great start, and we bought the breakfast hampers - such great value. We had great weather one night and it rained the second but it didnt matter - they have activities whatever the weather. Bella was a beautiful caravan, very homely. Would go back in a heartbeat!

We arrived at the grounds of the Bella which was idyllic we were met by william the owner who was very friendly and showed us around. The Bella was amazing it was decorated beautifully it was cosy and warm and the bed was very comfortable. There was an outside kitchen area for to have barbeques, a wooden cabin with a welcoming hamper, a table inside to play board games. There was nothing they did not think of. On the night we tried to light the camp fire with not much luck, but the second night we managed it. Sitting out at night listening to the birds with a glass of wine was lovely. It made our stay even more brilliant as we had the whole place to ourselves. There is nothing i could fault with the holiday even the weather was nice for april time. Also everything was spotless and very clean.

"We had a wonderful stay here in Bella, gypsy caravan.  Julie and William were so welcoming and had thought of everything we needed ,even down to marshmallows for the bbq.  There was a delicious lot of goodies in our welcoming hamper and a cake with a candle for my birthday. Copper Beech Glade is a haven of peace and we were lucky enough to have the site to ourselves.  We sank into the gorgeous bed with the ultimate bedding and had the best night's sleep we could remember and slept in. Cooking breakfast over the open campfire using logs and kindling that was provided, my "One match and no fire lighters husband" was in his element. The facilities are perfect and appealed to our own ecological ideals. The cabin housed a cosy eating/sitting are area and was perfect for reading and listening to bird song with no intruding television, mobile or internet. It was an ideal place to visit Harrogate and Ripon where there was plenty to explore but, to be honest, we were more contented to be at our cosy retreat down in Copper Beech Glade - thank you Julie and William for a truly memorable holiday!"

"Our stay was unbelievable. One of my favourite trips ever. The best thing was the facilities and everything else provided by our hosts, William and Julie. It exceeded our expectations."

""We cannot praise Copper Beech Glade enough. We booked Carmen and Bella so had the site to ourselves. As soon as we arrived we got a lovely welcome from Julie and the family who showed us around. The site is really pretty and very well maintained. The two caravans are lovely and snug and very clean. The cabin is well equipped and cosy. There is plenty of cooking equipment both for the camp fire and the BBQ. There are also plenty of games, we really enjoyed our game of croquet. The site is private from the main house and Julie is a great host, attentive and keen to make sure you have all you need but not at all intruding on your privacy. There was a lovely welcome hamper with eggs, bread, wine, biscuits, cupcakes and marshmallows for toasting. Upon finding out it was my Dad's birthday fizz and a candle were added too. The site has lots of wildlife.""

"We loved it! Really excellent little place, a very secluded glad with a magical, homely attitude. The hosts couldn't have been more welcoming, and the welcome hamper was amazing with wine, bread, butter, local orange juice, eggs from the Hall's hens and marshmallows for toasting round the camp fire. Bella, our caravan, was warm and cosy, and the perfect base for exploring Harrogate and Fountains Abbey."

"We had the most perfect weekend! The best things was the little suprises and attention to detail that Julie Wilberforce has created - like a series of printed recipes for meal ideas on the BBQ grill. The breakfasts were very good value for money and so lovely to have local food delivered in the morning! Everything you could need was there, it was like they thought of everything to make the stay perfect. The worst bit was leaving!"

"Loved it. The glade was absolutely beautiful and far exceeded our expectations. The best thing was the location and the attention to detail! It was really incredible the effort that Julie and her family had gone to. There was nothing that we wanted or needed that wasn't there."

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

(3) cancel the Booking. If we do not receive your instructions within 5 days of contacting you, we reserve the right to cancel your Booking without liability to you.

7. Our Responsibility for your Booking

Your contract is with the Owner and its booking conditions apply. As Agent, we accept no responsibility for the actual provision of the Booking. Our responsibilities are limited to making the Booking in accordance with your instructions and acting properly in accordance with our legal duties as an Agent. We accept no responsibility for any information about the Booking that we pass on to you in good faith. However, in the event that we are found liable to you on any basis whatsoever, our maximum liability to you is limited to twice the cost of your Booking (or the appropriate proportion of this if not everyone on the Booking is affected). We do not exclude or limit any liability for death or personal injury that arises as a result of our negligence or that of any of our employees whilst acting in the course of their employment.

8. Pets

Not all properties accept pets. If you wish to take your pet on holiday, please advise us before booking and we can check whether pets are accepted at the property. You must obtain the prior consent of the Owner before taking any pets to the property. A nightly charge may be made by the Owner for each pet and additional terms may apply.

9. VAT

Many of the Owners of properties in the Canopy & Stars portfolio are not registered for VAT in which case no tax is payable. Where VAT is payable, the tax is included in the advertised holiday rental price.

10. Visa, passport and health requirements.

Unless you tell us otherwise, we assume that all members of your party are British citizens who hold or will hold full British passports valid for the entire duration of the Arrangements you chose to purchase. Information on visa, passport and health requirements, where given and applicable, is so given on this basis. Requirements may change and you are therefore strongly recommended to check the up to date position with the Owner of the Booking, Passport Office, appropriate embassy or consulate or your doctor as applicable in good time before the commencement of your holiday.

11. Insurance

You are strongly recommended to take out personal travel insurance for all members of your party. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. Please read your policy details and take them with you on holiday.

12. Special requests

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

16. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These terms and conditions have been drafted in accordance with and are governed by English law and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any and all disputes arising out of these Agency Terms & Conditions.

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.

18. Validity clause

In the event that a court finds that a condition in these Agency Terms & Conditions is illegal or void, the illegal or void provision will be severed from the remainder of the Agency Terms & Conditions, which will continue to be valid and have full force and effect.
