Three well-travelled Gypsy caravans gathered around a fire pit, with a stream for paddling and a lawn for croquet. Bring the whole family!

Go across an arched stone bridge over the river, past an 18th century water mill and you’ll find Copper Beech Glade, a trio of colourful Gypsy wagons, each with their own individual story and all surrounded by a circle of copper beech trees. Bella, the largest, is painted burgundy and cream, with pastel florals, horse brasses and a decorative wood burner inside. Carmen is vibrant red, with an intricate red and gold fabric ceiling. And Rosita is the baby of the family, made especially for children and complete with a child-sized tea set. All well-travelled, they’ve come to rest at the historic Markington Hall (first mentioned in the Domesday Book) in the care of your helpful hosts William and Julie. They're accompanied by a log cabin living space with room for extra guests, with a modern kitchen for when you’re not using the fire pit, and there’s a compost loo and shower in the glade too, all for your private use.

Just next to the Copper Beech Glade is a lawn with everything you need for badminton, boules, football or a good old-fashioned family game of croquet. The beck running nearby also offers plenty of fun for everyone - the adults might like to try their hand at trout fishing while the children paddle and build dens. And at a handy distance from Harrogate, Thirsk and York, you've got a choice between day trips to the city and local museums and long walks on the wild moors of Bronte country.

***Outside of July and August, the wagons at Copper Beech Glade are booked individually as Bella and Carmen. If you'd like to book the whole glade, please call 0117 204 7830.***

Meet your hosts

Markington Hall is William and Julie's old family home, although they only recently moved back to start restoring it. It was left in disrepair after a long and interesting history - it was first mentioned in the Domesday Book as a fortified hunting lodge in the Forest of Knaresborough, and the house itself dates back to Tudor times. The hunting lodge which was sacked and burnt to the ground by the Scots in 1300, and the current building was built to replace it in approximately 1410, with the two wings added in the 17th- and 18th-centuries. Markington Hall has been in the Wilberforce family since 1731 and the current William is 4x great grandson of the abolitionist William Wilberforce. As well as The Hall, the property encompasses a 13th century tithe barn, coach house, mill, chapel and 5 acres of garden and woodland.

The Copper Beech Glade is part of a diversification programme to generate funds to continue the renovation works.

Wildlife & Environment

Markington Hall and the Copper Beech Glade are adjacent to farmland and nearby woods. Numerous examples of wildlife can be seen or have been sighted including otters, red kites, herons, bats, deer, tawny and screech owls, occasional barn owls and the area is rich in birdlife. The farmland has been incorporated in the EU ‘Higher Level Entry Scheme’ which provides protection, food and support for wildlife. As part of this scheme, pollen banks have been seeded, hedgerows replaced and woodland planted, and the work is ongoing.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

We stopped off for a couple nights during a family roadtrip. It really was a perfect place to stay and recharge.

I booked to take my family to Copper Beach Glade for my 40th Birthday! It was just magical Julie was the perfect host and I could not have wished for more. The site was larger than expected and catered for us in every way possible. We had stunning nights by the campfire singing and laughing and the kids who are usually glued to the wifi were enjoying playing Rounders and Croquet. Brilliant value for money, the Caravans are a delight and the lodge has everything you could ever need for a splendid holiday! Thank You so much for a wonderful stay!

We had a fantastic 6 days at Copper Beech. Lots of fun had at the site, with the croquet, boules and the football goals. We ran out of time to play badminton. Campfire was brilliant, also as it had all of the equipment to be able to cook every meal it made it all the more fun. Would recommend this to families, and as you can take a couple of tents, you can make it an extended family break.

I literally can't recommend this place enough, it was INCREDIBLE. I went there for my Hen with all my friends and we had the best time. The weather was not always on our side but the surroundings made it so perfect that we didn't care about the rain! Julie was so wonderful and helpful for everything we needed and we were made to feel so welcome. I am already planning our next trip!

Wonderfully relaxing three nights at this idyllic spot. The kids loved playing badminton, stroking the very friendly chicken, Rosie and the adults enjoyed cooking over the open fire with a glass of wine in hand. Very helpful and friendly hosts who checked to make sure everything was ok every day. We hope to be back next Summer with our friends for another stay. Heartily recommended!

Wonderful stay in a beautiful setting. Friendly helpful owners, who have thought of everything you need down to the tiniest detail.

It was perfect. Have recommended to friends and planning a return visit with a bigger party. The place itself was stunning, the gypsy caravans really were magical. Everything had been thought of to make it a fabulous stay and the owners felt like hosts, warm, welcoming and really helpful. Loved it. My three year old daughter was over the moon and delighted about every new exciting thing she found.

We'll thought out a home away from home Julie and William were wonderful very helpful great surrounding we couldn't of asked for anything better great atmosphere didn't want to leave

We had an absolutely wonderful time, it was both relaxing and filled with adventure. The children loved looking for birds, exploring everything and building a campfire. It was convenient and comfortable and felt homely despite being absolutely unlike anything we have done before.

Our stay was superb the hosts were really kind and couldn't do enough to help the place was fantastic everything was thought through couldn't ask for more

This was an excellent short break for us all. Everything was very well set up and the site provided everything we needed-many thanks to our hosts.

Had a fantastic weekend 'glamping' with friends at Copper Beech Glade. The setting is perfect - peaceful, idyllic, spacious etc. And just about everything is provided in the cabin. Fortunately too the weather was spot on for us.

This was my first time using the Canopy and Stars website to book and accommodation and it has turned out to be one of the most memorable holidays our family has ever had! Copper Beech Glade was absolutely perfect for our group and the setting was truly magical. My 4 year-old son had the time of his life staying in a gypsy caravan all by himself and being able to roast marshmallows by the fire. I was initially unsure of how comfortable it would be when making the booking but it turned out to be very comfortable indeed. The kitchen was well stocked and even the compost loo was not at all stinky contrary to expectations! As lifelong city folks, this was exactly the kind of camping experience we wanted. All the beauty and fun without the pain and hardship! Would love to come again and friends are already asking about our amazing stay. Would recommend highly.

We had a lovely time in our Gypsy caravans. We had the whole site to ourselves, so it was a lovely private glade. Firewood was provided, but we were also allowed to forage for our own, which brought out the Ray Mears in us and cooking on the campfire was lovely, with the great tripod and Dutch Ovens provided. For the more timid camper there is power, hot water and a well equipped kitchen in the log cabin as well as a lovely hamper provided by our generous hosts. The beds, both in the caravans and the sofa bed in the cabin were all super comfy. All the cooking materials you'll need as well as linen and towels are provided so you won't go without. And do not fear the compost toilet - it is clean, comfortable and doesn't smell hardly at all. Wind up torches are provided so it's easy enough to get to in the middle of the night! All in all a lovely trip in beautiful surroundings. Lots of fun to be had with the games and sports equipment provided and even a ukelele for a bit of fireside singing.

Had a fabulous time again (second time stayed here, won't be the last!) It's so beautiful and peaceful but so much to do whether you're alone or with the whole family. Julie and William are such amazing hosts, just the right amount of attentiveness.

"The place is amazing. The hosts have thought of everything and the welcome and breakfast hampers are fantastic. Cooking on the camp fire is so much fun and sitting under the stars at night round the fire at night is magical"

"Fantastic stay in a superb location, great hosts in Julie & William"

"Absolutely loved it, gorgeous spot with lots of space, extremely well equipped, you really only need your clothes and shoes. The owners were great and offered very useful and delicious food boxes. The caravans were warm and everything was clean."

"It was perfect. Best thing was the owners' attention to detail and the warm welcome. It was a lot of money for a weekend, but there were 8 of us, and it was perfect, so value for money was excellent."

"Copper Beech Glade is a beautiful setting for the gypsy caravans and the fire circle with tree stump seats really added to the feel of the place. The owners were incredibly welcoming and provided a fantastic welcome pack on arrival including freshly baked bread and delicious shortbread biscuits. The caravan was perfectly warm and snug despite the autumnal weather and we'd definitely go back!"

"Loved it. The glade was absolutely beautiful and far exceeded our expectations. The best thing was the location and the attention to detail! It was really incredible the effort that Julie and her family had gone to. There was nothing that we wanted or needed that wasn't there."

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

16. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.

18. Validity clause

In the event that a court finds that a condition in these Agency Terms & Conditions is illegal or void, the illegal or void provision will be severed from the remainder of the Agency Terms & Conditions, which will continue to be valid and have full force and effect.
