Larix Lodge Tent - Safari tent in Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Last cache: 19:33:50, Friday 24 November 2017

Jollydays

Suitable for children of all ages

Not suitable for pets

Children are more than welcome. Sorry no pets.

Spacious family lodge tents with little huts inside, in woodland just west of York

Jollydays has been lovingly crafted to combine the natural magic of camping in the woods with plenty of comfortable touches. The tents are scattered through fifteen acres of woodland to give everyone plenty of space, and in the true spirit of glamping, all the kit you'll need for your adventure is already here. Pack a jumper and torch, but that's pretty much it: inside the tent, concealed neatly in two little huts, are your kitchen and bathroom with hot showers and gas hobs. You'll find one dreamily canopied king-sized bed, two singles, a sofa bed for two and plenty of space inside, hung with bunting and softly lit by the candelabra. Jollydays is great fun in all seasons: you'll naturally spend most of the long, summer days outside, but as light levels change through the year, autumn evenings when the season's darker and colder are best spent snuggled up by the woodburner in your slippers.

One of the best things about Jollydays is the freedom to roam the outdoors: put your wellies on and scramble around the woodland, where kids big and small can build dens and swing on rope swings whatever the weather. After a long day getting muddy in the fresh air, come back to a private hot bath - the folk at Jollydays take great care of the environment to the extent that each tent's cooking hut and hot showers and loos use only 7.5kw of electricity altogether. Hot water bottles, blankets and plenty of candles are provided for chillier nights.

Any extras can be picked up on site, so local charcoal for the outside BBQ and delicious things to grill on it can be ordered from Carolyn and Christian in advance and delivered to your tent 'door'! Mingle with other guests over a cupcake in The Tea Tent just round the corner, meet new friends toasting marshmallows around the big campfire, or fire up the pizza oven and open a bottle of wine...the friendly, relaxed atmosphere is something special. Guests say it's like stepping into a different world!

PLEASE REMEMBER: All the Lodge Tents at Jollydays are equally beautifully equipped. Upon arrival, you will be shown to a lodge tent of the type you requested - the names are just for show!

Our guests say...

Loved the campsite and the tent. Extremely welcoming hosts. Jim went out of his way to light campfire and pizza oven for us. It made very good pizzas once we got the hang of it. Just a couple of things that would have made the tent easier, an extra self in the kitchen and a shelf in the bathroom would have been helpful. Would love to have a stay in summer and make good use of bbq and decking.

"Group of girls went for two birthdays. Some of them went up first and said they arrived to total darkness. When we arrived it was magical, they had lit up the room with lanterns added extra bunting, had the log fire roaring and champagne poured. Walking through the door it was better than I had even imaged. The whole thing has been impeccably thought out. Spending a day in front of the fire drinking telling stories and playing games, topped off with a singsong around the campfire was a much needed relaxed and fulfilled weekend full of smiles and laughter"

Activities

At Jollydays

At Jollydays you are literally surrounded by opportunities for adventure; the woodlands are perfect for building dens and swinging around on rope swings.

You can also try archery and bushcraft with the local, all singing all dancing, "better than Ray Mears", Andrew Middleton. He caters for all types and groups, and will show you how to survive in the English countryside. Think you’re Robin Hood? Then try out his archery courses and take from the rich and give to the poor. If you’re an all adult group he will hang champagne from trees and challenge you to get it down without touching the bottle. Contact Andrew directly on 01751 417 950

Or for a more relaxing break, you can organise for Diane Hammill to set up a basket weaving session to make your own basket. She is also an expert in making beeswax candles, nature walks and wild food expeditions into the woodland. Contact Diane at babydovedale@msm.com or on 07561 112831

Outdoors and Active

The North Yorkshire countryside is full of exciting things to do. Some of the following are sure to catch your eye:

A day of polo is always recommended, and you don’t need riding experience or polo talent as the local club provide an expert to guide you through the day.

Go Ape at Dalby forest is absolutely fantastic for a group or family day out. This tree top adventure can take up to 3 hours to complete, it includes being 60ft in the air and zip lining it down. They also do other cool stuff like mountain biking and African drumming.

Set in 50 acres of grounds, Allerthorpe Lakeland Park is great for large groups, with a large range of different water sports and have many team building exercises, like raft building. There's even the opportunity to get a qualification if you do a BCU or RYA course.

A family run business set in 35 acres of rolling Yorkshire countryside, Monkton Shooting ground is a perfect place to try clay pigeon shooting. This family are an informal bunch who will provide a fun and inexpensive day out; it could be for beginners or a corporate do. Specialising in tailoring for any group’s needs, you can be sure that they will provide a great day out.

Places to visit

Castle Howard is a stunning baroque mansion just 20 minutes from the camp. This magnificent house has been used as Brideshead in 2 adaptations of the Evelyn Waugh classic. It makes for a splendid day out, the house and grounds are stunning, there’s a great adventure playground for the kids and the farm shop is amazing too. Other beautiful houses in the area are: Hovingham Hall, Nunnington Hall, Scampston Hall and Newburgh Priory.

York is consistently picked as the best European tourist city and contains many unique attractions including the Jorvik Viking museum, the famous Betty’s Tea rooms, York Dungeons, the Chocolate Story of York attraction, quaint and unique shops, museums, galleries, sightseeing and ghost tours. (And don’t forget the incredible Minster!)

The award winning Eden Camp at Malton is a very comprehensive and dynamic way of telling the story of the Second World War in an Old Italian POW Camp, from battles to rationing, and land girls to rat catchers. It is only 20 minutes drive away.

The North York Moors National Park is wonderful and quieter than her sister the Dales National Park. This is where some highly known TV and motion picture scenes were filmed, from Heartbeat to Harry Potter. On a sunny day the skies seem to stretch across the relatively flat topped moorland, with only wooded valleys and streams distorting the view. The purple heather contrasts with the sea and cliff line creating a picturesque view across the North Sea. There is also the North Yorkshire Moors Railway winding through sheltered valleys nestled in the National Park. You can pick up the train at Pickering and wind all the way to Whitby. Alternatively you can stop off for walks and pub stops on the way!

The coast is just 45 minutes away depending upon where you wish to go - Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Scarborough, Flamborough Head - there are cliffs, beaches, bays, the lot, and the climate is apparently warmer and drier than Cornwall! The Yorkshire heritage coast is one of the UKs best kept secrets and a real favourite with our glampers. Whitby, still a working fishing port is best known for its Dracula connection. Scarborough is a classic seaside town which still retains some of its genteel grandeur. Robin Hoods bay is a quaint old smuggling town with a dramatic location and Runswick bay is a tiny village with a sheltered beach.

Flamingo Land is only half an hour away from the campsite, offering the thrills of rollercoaster rides and a famous zoo. It’s a small, quirky family run theme park which has lots of impressive rides but is also great for the little ones. Set on the outskirts of a pretty Yorkshire village you can look at lions whilst on the log flume, or ride over the giraffes on a cable car. A great day out for all the family.

York Maze is just outside of York and no more than 20 minutes from camp. They create a new maze layout every year, from Big Ben to Star Trek, to give you the best possible experience. Along with the maze they many other activities to do there, so it can turn from a couple hours of fun to an entire days enjoyment.

Food & Drink

At Jollydays

Each tent has its own kitchen facilities and barbecue, and the local Balloon Tree farm shop can provide you with delicious local produce (you can even Pick Your Own). Alternatively, there is a Co-op in Stamford Bridge (20 mins walk), or 2 large supermarkets that can deliver to the site. Or for a real treat, Carolyn can provide a supper basket and breakfast basket service delivered straight to your tent. These need to be booked at least 4 days before you arrive - get in touch with Carolyn for current menus.

Pubs & Restaurants

Talbot Hotel (15 mins) - This country house style hotel has recently undergone a £4 million redevelopment and local boy James Martin is now in charge of the kitchen. The food is always delicious but afternoon tea is a particular favourite - look out for the miniature Victoria sponge!

The Star Inn (30 mins) - If you’re after something special this is Carolyn and Christian's all time favourite pub. It's A 14th century thatched inn with a fabulous restaurant attached, where owner Andrew Pern has created a robust country menu full of the best produce Yorkshire has to offer. The pub is situated in an idyllic village close to the Moors National Park, making it a great place to have a drink after a day in the hills.

The Three Cups (20 mins walk) - The local pub - relaxed, child friendly and usually with a cosy fire roaring. It’s not a gourmet pub so stick to something simple (the fish and chips are tasty!)

Sizzling Plate (5 mins) - The sizzling plate Indian restaurant in Stamford Bridge is the closest and also has a takeaway service.

Jinnah Restaurant (15 mins) - Another good curry house, slightly further away but very easy to get to, on the A64. The Jinnah has more space and has a buffet along with a takeaway service.

The Balloon Tree (5 mins) - As well as being the local farm shop with lovely local produce, there is a nice little cafe open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

Jamie's Italian (30 mins) Yes we know it’s a chain but the York restaurant is still worth a visit. It’s sited in a really cool building close to the river and has a raw, slightly industrial vibe. It’s always buzzing and great for kids.

Betty's (30 mins) - Betty’s is a Yorkshire institution for lunch or afternoon tea. The service is excellent and the cake trolley is the stuff of dreams. Surprisingly for a posh place they are great with kids and always have activity packs on hand. Don’t be put off by the queues - they move quickly. The shop also sells delicious treats to take away.

JBakers (30 mins) - If you find yourself in York and have something a bit special in mind, head to J Baker. The food is delicious and beautifully presented, and great for romantic suppers.

The Farmers Cart (10 mins) - The Farmers Cart Farm Shop is well worth a visit; the cake is delightful and the setting pretty and peaceful. They have a range of animals to watch and feed on site to entertain the little ones, including their new farm attraction... piglets!

Meet your hosts

Jollydays was set up by Christian and Carolyn, who were originally trained in fashion and landscape architecture respectively. They were previously “darlings of the design world” and are renowned for redefining the contemporary fireplace and transforming the industry. However by 2008, they were tired and stressed with the pace of urban life in Central London and moved to idyllic North Yorkshire with a dream of setting up an eco-chic glamping business, which would nurture their own family life and support local tourism. Jollydays was born and became an immediate, runaway success. And with four children of their own, your hosts have really thought of everything when it comes to planning a fun-filled holiday for the whole family.

The camp is set within 200 acres of woodland, just 5 minutes from the Yorkshire Wolds and 30 minutes from the North York Moors National Park. Carolyn and Christian promote getting back out into the wild, away from the computer screens and technology that seem to have taken over modern life. As the camp motto says, this is the perfect place for anyone to "Escape, Relax and Enjoy the Magic!"

Wildlife and Environment

The environment is very important to everyone at Jollydays, and Carolyn and Christian are very conscious of their own environmental impact; they plant 7 trees for every 1 they have to take out and try not to take down a healthy tree if at all possible. As much waste as possible is recycled, and each tent has its own recycling bin to encourage guests to do likewise. Minimal electricity (only 7.5kw) is used on site, and they even donate 10% of their profits to environmental and educational projects.

Being set in the middle of woodland, human and animal residents come into contact on a daily basis, so there have to be strict rules to protect the local wildlife. To maintain the ambience of the camp, cars must be parked away from tents in a designated car park so that animals still have safe conduct throughout the woodland area, and pets may not be brought.

Getting there

Jollydays Luxury Camping, Buttercrambe Moor Wood, Stamford Bridge, North Yorkshire, YO41 1AP

By train

The nearest station to us is York, 20 minutes’ drive away. You can either take a taxi (Carolyn recommends Streamline Taxis) or the bus (see below).

By bus

The nearest bus stop is Stamford Bridge, which is only 20 minutes’ walk away. If you're getting the train, there is a direct bus to this stop from York railway station.

By car

From the A64 (York outer ring road), turn onto the A166 towards Bridlington. About 4 miles down, after passing through Gate Helmsley, you will see the farm shop "The Balloon Tree" on your left. Take the next left towards Buttercrambe. Follow this road round, and the site entrance is the 3rd on the left, with a large oak tree in the hedge and a small sign to Jollydays. The car park is 100m away from the tents to preserve the peace and tranquility of the site, but you can unload all your gear closer to your tent if you wish - drive on to the reception, about 150m beyond the car park.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise

Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.
