Meet your hosts

Meet Michael & Anne-Marie

Michael and Anne-Marie moved from their previous home in the English Lake District in May 2017 following a long distance love affair with the landscape of the far North West of Scotland, and in particular Assynt. They both love the poetry of Norman MacCaig, a Scottish poet whose words vividly evoke the experience of the landscape and have always been drawn to this special place.

Michael’s passion for fell running has taken him high into this wild and remote region, while Anne-Marie’s love of the landscape inspires her work as an artist. They have created an inspiring living and work space in their new home, Taigh a Chnuic (House on the Hill) and have brought the same energy and attention to detail to their new venture, The Studio Hoose. A beautiful self-contained living space nestled a little further up their croft.

They saw this project as a collaboration of their complimentary skillsets, Michael’s design and project management experience and Anne-Marie’s interior design and sense of space. They wanted the ‘Hoose’ to feel as if it has always been there – its contemporary shapes and construction, completely in harmony and sympathy with the landscape around it. Designed to become part of the continuing evolution of the dramatic and breath-taking surroundings, offering an experience with many dimensions.

Wildlife & Environment

Immerse yourself in nature, experience the peace the landscape can offer, absorb its tranquillity and experience the stunning views across Loch Broom and the hills beyond. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get closer to some of the wildest and most remote mountain scenery Scotland and these Isles has to offer.

Lochbroom, translated as ‘loch of rain showers’ in Gaelic, is a sea loch located in Wester Ross on the North West coast of Scotland. Directly east across Loch Broom, the foothills rise gently to reveal the drama of Beinn Dearg and Easter Ross. Heading away from nearby Ullapool, towards Inverness, The Corrieshalloch Gorge is a must. Translating as Ugly Hollow in Gaelic, this stunning environment is a tremendous opportunity to see and feel the force of the River Broom as it drops over 60 metres before flowing into Loch Broom. Further afield, the area north of Ullapool is Coigach and Assynt, a truly unique and awe-inspiring landscape of spectacular mountains and lochs –wild, remote, isolated, atmospheric – memorable in so many ways.

Pods of dolphins are regularly sighted on Loch Broom, with pine marten, otter, red squirrel and red deer, not to mention the diverse bird species including the isles largest raptor, the white-tailed sea eagle, inhabiting the local area.

Getting there

Studio Hoose, Taigh a Chnuic, Letters, Loch Broom, Ross-shire, IV23 2SD

By car

Letters is situated approximately 9 miles away out of Ullapool about 3 miles off the A835. Drive from Inverness to Ullapool on the A835 (approximately 45 miles) and about 6 miles before Ullapool, look out for the road sign and turn left to ‘Letters’ and ‘Loggie’. Drive a few hundred metres along a tree lined lane. Take the first right turn heading for Letters and Loggie and drive along a beautiful single track road for approximately 3 miles. It’s a stunning drive, with spectacular views of Loch Broom to your right, but do watch out for the very relaxed and slow moving sheep grazing at the roadside! Once in Letters, drive for another 500 metres, looking out for the lovely dry stone wall with the burn trickling through on the left. You have arrived! The Studio Hoose is clearly signposted. Drive up the track, with Taigh a Chnuic on the left, and park up.

Parking is located 60 metres from Studio Hoose, accessed by a hill path and steps.

By public transport

The nearest mainline station is Inverness, 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Regular train services from Edinburgh and Glasgow run to Inverness daily. For something extra special, the overnight Caledonian sleeper runs from London Euston to Inverness. There is also a station in Garve, 30 minutes by car, where you can pick up the iconic ‘Kyle’ line to the Isle of Skye, one of the world’s most scenic railway  journeys.

There is a local bus from Ullapool, with onward connections to the far North and Inverness. The bus will stop at Taigh a Chnuic.

Please get in touch directly with the owners after booking if you would like to arrange a pick up if using public transport. There is a charge for this.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

Agency Terms & Conditions

The price charged in total for more than one Booking will always equal the prices charged separately for each individual Booking. All Bookings are available to be purchased separately at the same price as they are when more than one Booking is made. This means that any multiple Bookings do not constitute a package as defined in the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992.
