The Train Carriage - Train carriage in Ceredigion, United Kingdom

Last cache: 01:56:16, Saturday 25 November 2017

The Yurt Farm

Suitable for children of all ages

Not suitable for pets

Children are more than welcome. Unfortunately pets cannot be accommodated.

Stroll the hills and woods and meet all the animals at this family-friendly and family built farm! 2 kids can be accommodated on roll mats

The Train Carriage was a real bargain - Thea and Laurie actually swapped a neighbour a box of organic vegetables for it! They set to work refitting it with fresh panelling which gives the wagon its soft woody smell, bright red metalwork for a dash of colour and a big bed and a woodburner. Given that they have built everything at The Yurt Farm themselves, it was a breeze! It's now a comfy, cosy living space that looks out onto hills and fields from its position in the lower half of their land. The carriage has a fire pit for marshmallow toasting and gas hobs for whipping up simple meals or a cup of tea, but you can't pass up the opportunity to meet Margherita, the monster pizza oven, who lives up at the communal cabin where you'll also find useful stuff like the showers, power points (but not for hairdryers!) and the recycling area.

The Yurt Farm as a whole is a great place to take it easy. In the field just above where the carriage lives is the Orange Yurt and two others, which are spread around a large meadow, home to the communal cabin, a kids play area with a rope swing and sandpit and the small wind turbine that keeps it all ticking over. There are chickens that live over by the wood store and sheep roaming in the field next door, but up at the house is where the full menagerie lives. A herd of cows, pet lambs and three donkeys are soon to be joined by goats and pigs. You'll also find the farm shop at the end of the drive by the house, where you can pick up home-grown eggs, meat and salad leaves.

Our guests say...

The Train Carriage was wonderful; an idyllic setting surrounded by bluebells. The kids had a wonderful time feeding the chickens, exploring the woodland and getting wet in the stream. Its a wonderful setup with great hosts who obviously have a talent for working with wood (I especially liked the craftsmanship in the composting toilets!!!) Very clean and only room for 6 families so its always peaceful. We will be back!

Meet your hosts

Thea and Sylvan

After university, Laurie and Thea both joyously turned back from the brink of the workaday world to settle on the farm where Laurie had grown up, five miles from another farm where Thea was raised. They wanted to give their own children the same childhood that they themselves had had and The Yurt Farm came about when they realised how much they had to share with everyone. Back then, glamping had only just begun to be talked about and most of their friends thought they were mad to start such a thing. But they set out anyway, crafting everything themselves from the communal cabin to the farm shop shack, decorating and digging, felling and clearing while bemused cows and sheep looked on from what they considered their home, but Laurie called his workshop. What they have made, in their lovely spot in the hills just south of Aberystwyth, might not prove that they aren't mad, but certainly shows how deeply they care about and love what they do! They have taken on not only the yurts, but three children, a herd of cows, a flock of sheep, some pet lambs, a hefty handful of chickens, large-scale salad growing, a few donkeys and the latest arrival, some pigs, are on the way. They stock a locally popular farm shop where you can always grab fresh leaves, eggs and meat and everything.

Cryfryn Farm, where The Yurt Farm is, was one of the earliest registered organic farms in the UK but the yurts have given the farm a fresh burst of vitality. Laurie and Thea are able to show people how the meat, vegetables and eggs that they buy in the farm shop and/or they receive in their veg box are reared and grown. This year they also plan to buy some goats that will keep down the grass in the yurt meadow and provide tasty cheese for topping our pizzas.

There are four generations on the farm, Jane and Thomas, Laurie’s grandparents, Matthew and Suzanne, Laurie’s dad and his partner, your hosts (Laurie and Thea) and their children Mossy, Wren and Sylvan.  This is pretty rare nowadays and something they're very proud of. Who wouldn’t want to stay and live on the farm?

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise

Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

17. Discrepancies
