An unusual combination of stone barn and timber cabin, just above the coastal path and within walking distance of sandy beaches

Down a sweeping drive, a little way up from a field of curious donkeys, it’s difficult to know what to call the charming building sitting on the side of the Hoffnant valley - downstairs, thick stone walls give away this former barn’s agricultural past, while the timber upper level with oak tree ‘growing’ through the centre has a distinctly cabin-like feel. In wonderfully thrifty style, many of the materials used in this unusual creation are recycled; floors and window sills have been cleverly fashioned from scaffold boards used during the renovation, the double-ended bath sits on a cradle hand made from reclaimed wood and the pan rack in the large downstairs kitchen was once an old meat spit retrieved from somewhere in the grounds. Big windows along the front look down over the valley, and if you’d like some birdsong to accompany the view, double doors lead from the upstairs living area onto an open balcony.

You’re so close to the sea that you can hear waves breaking at the bottom of the valley when the wind is right. Leave the cottage and you've got direct access onto the coastal path, which you can follow around the headland to beautifully sandy West Wales beaches. Owners Kathryn and Geoff particularly recommend the beach at Llangrannog, if only for Wales's closest pub to the sea and the unbeatable homemade ice cream from the beachside café.

COMING SOON! A separate shower hut complete with hot water and beautiful views across the valley.

Meet your hosts

From owner Kathryn:

"The property came to Geoff and me through the family.  It was my brother Peter Locke’s home for many years.  He was a man of the woods- his need to live in close connection with the natural world was far greater than his need for creature comforts.  For years he lived here without electricity or running water, but when he could, he’d light a fire and cook outside and just sit and be with the wildlife.  This was his greatest pleasure.

In 2011, everything except the walls of the building was destroyed by fire.  That gave Peter the opportunity to imagine and create his dream home - Locke’s Cottage. Sadly he died not long after the rebuild began in 2012.

Geoff and I share Peter’s need for a relationship with the natural world, and I needed to take care of what mattered to my brother.  We therefore took on the renovation with Mark, the fabulous builder who had begun the project with Peter.  It was a labour of love to bring his dream to fruition and to be able to share the legacy created for him.  Peter himself had intended to let the cottage in the summer months while he was away travelling."

Wildlife & Environment

The cottage is off-grid and solar powered. The building was designed to make maximum use of sunlight in both summer and winter, with two banks of solar panels at different angles. The renovation made use of as much material as possible from the land.

There is a wide variety of habitats in the grounds and surroundings, including woodland, pasture, scrubland, heath, rock face, wild flower meadow, flower garden, supporting a wealth of biodiversity.

From outside the house you may see foxes, weasels, bats, rabbits, squirrels, field mice and badgers who sometimes climb the steps to the upper garden. A badger highway crosses the track near the house. Owls sit on the balcony railings. Goshawk, buzzards and red kite can be seen circulating above the house. Most of the year the woodland is alive with the sound of birds. Bees and butterflies make full use of the flower garden.

Our guests say...

Had a wonderful time here, really the bees knees, would go back in an instant. Lovely place, well equipped, peaceful and clean. An absolute delight. Also, great walk to a lovely local pub overlooking a beach. literally heaven!

We had a fantastic weekend at Locke's Cottage, despite it raining throughout the journey to Brynhoffnant. Thankfully the weather changed and we had the whole weekend full of sunshine - albeit a little cool out of the sun, but I'm not going to complain too much about that. The description on the website doesn't really do the cottage justice, as it really is a peaceful haven, hidden well away from the rat race. From the eclectic mix of an old-fashioned stone cottage on the ground floor to the modern and bright first floor, you will fall in love with the place straight away. We, as in Bev (wife) and Sorcha (dog), found it peaceful and relaxing but were still able to interact with 'humanity' being just a short drive away - after all, you have to find a good pub! Plenty of walks available and some of the nearby beaches are wonderful when the weather permits, within walking distance if you fancy the challenge walking back up the hills! It was a pleasure to be able to share this cottage and we would really like to consider going back soon (do I win the voucher now?!) :-)

We had a lovely stay at Locke's Cottage. It was very quiet and relaxing and we enjoyed the walks. It is a nice walk of about a mile and a half to a secluded beach and we enjoyed stopping at The Plwmb Tart on the way back for a delicious snack. The cottage has beautiful views across the countryside.

What a wonderful, chilled place. No neighbours. No wifi. No need to look at the clock. The log burner was amazing and the sofas either side of it perfect. Great selection of books and a wonderful bath. I have rarely seen my husband so relaxed and our dog loved the welcoming biscuits!!! In the summer, I'm sure we'd have spent more time upstairs in the living room and on the veranda, but our weather was cold and wet and so we rarely left the fireside! The log burner was easy to use for heating the radiators and water if the instructions were followed. All in all, a wonderful place that was the perfect getaway from the rush and clatter of real life.

Alison titchmarsh

we really enjoyed our 2 night stay in Locke's cottage. I was warm and cosy but off the beaten track.

Fantastic cosy cottage, beautiful views, lovely location. Perfect for coastal walks.

Lovely place, beautiful views, spotlessly clean and everything we needed for a very relaxing couple of days. Will definitely return and spend longer exploring the nearby coastline and sampling more of the lovely food served at the nearby Ship Inn.

Totally wonderful, relaxing stay in lovely minimalist setting. Locke's cottage reminded us all what family down time was all about. We were so lucky with the weather while we were there too, the sun shone every day, not what we expected for February in Wales!

We spent a very quiet and peaceful few days here over Christmas together with our cat.

We had such an incredible, cosy, chilled out stay at Locke's cottage. It is set in such a lovely location and was exactly what we need for an off-grind, quiet weekend.

A wonderful few days at Lockes cottage. A much needed break for us both and a belated 30th wedding anniversary gift from my sister. Highly recommend Lockes cottage and it's a credit to its owners , who we thank for sharing their holiday hime with us.

Catherine &Neil

Just back from a fantastic weekend at this wonderful cottage. The location was perfect, the facilities excellent and the welcome from out host was super friendly. Although the weather was not the best (Wales in September) there was still time for lovely walks dodging the showers and taking in the sea views and we made it down to the local village for a couple of drinks without too much trouble.

We had a great time, the cottage was exactly what we were looking for - very comfortable, quiet, cosy and well equipped. Perfect for a week of reading, playing games, relaxing and generally just winding down.

We had a wonderful three nights at Locke's Cottage, it's a great place to unwind and switch off, and the location is perfect for exploring South West Wales. The cottage itself is a real gem, it has got lots of character, lots of space (perfect for our Labrador), with great views over the surrounding countryside from the balcony.

We had an amazing stay. The cottage is beautiful, very unique, cozy and clean. The kitchen is well equipped and the collection of books is truly amazing! Location is very quiet and private. Our children and dog loved the place.

We had a peaceful, relaxing break with our two children. The cottage has an idyllic location and there were lots of welcoming, friendly touches.

It was a tranquil weekend break. The location forces you to relax and unwind. I enjoyed the chance to catch up on some reading and to observe the local wildlife

Two cosy nights with hubby and WITHOUT kids (first in 17 years). Just wanted somewhere quiet to spend quality time together and have a 'board meeting' about our company, neither of which we usually get time to do! The cottage fitted the bill perfectly, no mobiles, internet or TV. Just peace and quiet, comfy bed, lovely bath and a cosy fire.

The stay was fantastic. So relaxing and the cottage had everything we needed. It was really close to the beach and had a very convenient store nearby.

Absolutely Fabulous, very relaxing, lovely location and a very cosy stay enjoyed by all! Our six month old was fascinated by the stove and loved the bath!

A lovely, peaceful break after a hectic Christmas - it was just what we needed!

We spent 2 nights here for a pre-Christmas get away and absolutely loved it! We loved using the stove to heat the water and the cottage! The roll top bath was very luxurious. We used the kitchen to make dinner on one of the nights and found there was everything you could ask for. The local village of Llangrannog was very welcoming and we were left awe struck at the sight of dolphins feeding by the coast. The Pentre Arms did lovely food at a great price too - a good recommendation!

The cottage and views were beautiful and very relaxing. We really liked the decor of the cottage and it had all the amenities needed for those long dark nights of winter. I definately would recommend locke cottage to frinds.

We stayed for 3 nights - a return trip, we came the same time last year.

we had a really lovely time at Locke's cottage, away from the rest of the world and pretty much off grid so a chance to stop checking your phone and not worry about what's on tele - we played cards, read, chatted and enjoyed the roaring log burner. the dogs had a great time too. My only disappointment was I didn't see the badgers!

We had a lovely relaxing stay at this beautiful cottage. The decor is quirky, interesting and homely. We were lucky enough to have a series of close encounters with the neighbouring buzzards who were a joy to watch. Stepping out of the cottage we were only a short walk from the tranquil Penbryn Beach and village of Llangrannog. Altogether; a wonderful break!

Relaxing place to stay , peace and quiet and just the local wildlife to remind you you werent alone !

We had a lovely time at Locke's Cottage. The views from the balcony were magnificent. The weather was also kind which obviously helped with our enjoyment. The cottage had everything we needed. Although we only ate breakfast there, there seemed to be enough pots and pans to make meals had we so wished. It took us just under an hour to walk to the pub where we could have a drink and something to eat - via country footpaths and back roads. Should we decide to visit that area again we would definitely try and stay there again.

We had five nights and four days at Locke`s Cottage. We enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the cottage and explored the surrounding countryside on foot and by car.

We had a delightful stay at Locke's cottage, it really is a special place. Thank you for the personal touch of a pretty willow heart on our pillow, it is a lovely reminder of our 10th wedding anniversary. Best wishes from Anne and Ian

Such a gorgeous place and amazing location, we had such a fun and relaxing holiday!

We had an amazing stay at Locke's cottage over May half term. As a family with one young boy (10) and two dogs, it met our needs amazingly and was everything we could have wished for. Such an amazing and picturesque location, beaches close by and so many things to do in the local area.

Absolutely wonderful; we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Locke's Cottage. The cottage is a perfect place in which to relax and unwind in peace. Inside, the accommodation is very comfortable with plenty of room for two adults and two dogs to spread into. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of utensils and also includes a gas oven, fridge and freezer as well as plenty of storage space. The upstairs area was a wonderful cosy space with skylight windows which filled with stars on clear nights. The book shelves were well stocked with a range of fiction and non-fiction titles. The balcony was a perfect spot from which to sit and watch the local wildlife, catch up on some reading or star gaze. Other practical considerations - parking is available right by the front door, the solar panels easily provided enough energy for electricity, heating and hot water even at the end of a chilly April, and the 'how to find us' details provided by the owners are spot on - follow these as directed, rather than trying to rely on SatNav to reach the exact location.

Our stay was just idyllic. The cottage was extremely well equipped with every comfort and amenity. Should you wish to cook a banquet, you have every pan or utensil you could need.. It was beautifully clean and colourful and we loved the cottage mixture of fixtures and fitting. All in all we couldn't have chosen a better cottage.

Amazing place, 2 miles from the beach, perfect for dog lovers and everywhere we visited were dog friendly

This was booked as a birthday treat and didn't disappoint. The cottage is stunning and has beautiful views with plenty of nearby beaches to explore. We brought our dog with us and he thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area and relaxing in front of the log burner. It was a proper escape from it all. Highly recommended!

Beautiful cottage and brilliant location. We had a magical and relaxing time in between lots of lovely hill, cliff top and beach walks. The cottage is amazing and we loved the fact there's no TV and you have to heat your water via the wood burner ! It was so peaceful and cosy .

Our first Christmas away from home and Locke's Cottage was the perfect place to spend it. So quiet and peaceful. Fully equipped kitchen so had no problems cooking our Christmas dinner. Our nearly 14 year old dog Oliver was very happy with his doggy biscuits waiting for him on arrival and the 3 of us were more than happy curled up in front of the wood burner. We really couldn't fault this gem and would highly recommended it. Really didn't want to go home.

We spent a fantastic anniversary weekend in the rustic charm of Locke Cottage.

It began to get dark as we wondered if we had missed the property down the single track lane until we came suddenly through the trees at lockes cottage. On entering the cottage we couldn't of been more elated at the sight of the big wood burner. Every part of the cottage was uniquely decorated. Coming from the city how liberating it felt to be completely in the wild the only noises coming from he wildlife outside. Everything we needed was inside the cottage for cooking and we felt a little sad leaving it everyday to explore the surroundings. At night when the breeze turned cold we stood on the balcony turning our heads towards the stars wishing we could stay awake long enough to watch the frost appear on the hills we could see so far into the distance. We would wander to the nearby beach, enchanted by the wild sea and throw sticks for our dog then warm by the fire whilst getting acquainted with the friendly locals. On our 4 day stay we only saw one person pass our cottage, we truly felt alone and a chance to be as isolated as we chose. There is so much in nearby towns to indulge in true welsh culture, foods, landscape. This really was such a perfect place to escape everyday life.

Short break in a wonderful location, stunning location and views. Accommodation very comfortable and relaxing.

I had an amazing time at Locke's Cottage. From the minute I stepped through the door, I felt myself de-stress. The cottage is tucked away off a minor road, and is therefore peaceful and private. The sofas and bed were extremely comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped and everything is easy to use. The views from the balcony over the hills are just stunning, and sitting out in the sun with a glass of wine is pretty close to perfection. The location is great, being just off the A487 means you can easily get to all of the fantastic beaches and coastal towns of Ceredigion. I couldn't recommend Locke's Cottage highly enough for a relaxing, peaceful and comfortable stay.... and my two dogs absolutely loved it!

Myself and my wife decided to stay at Locke's cottage for our first wedding anniversary, and it was just what we wanted and more. A cosy, beautiful cottage, surrounded by the most idyllic, breath-taking landscape. Perfect for escaping for the weekend!

Glamping? I'm not so sure, no sign of roughing it here in any form but exactly what we'd hoped for, more luxurious than many homes. The upstairs and downstairs offered two different experiences and we made the most of both. Lovely and clean, well kept and well equipped. Offered great access to the local beaches.

We had a lovely time at a slow pace and without the distractions of every day modern life.

Absolutely fell in love with this place. Cottage and location wonderful.

We had a marvellous stay, with the owner unusually there to welcome us. Peace, tranquility all wrapped up in a very comfortable ,homely cottage, crafted with love.

We had a wonderful relaxed couple of days at the cottage. It was exactly what we wanted!

My Partner and I were chose to stay at Locke's Cottage for our 3 day honeymoon to escape the madness of a city wedding! Everything about the cottage was beautifully put together, the location is breathtaking, the decor of the cottage gorgeous. Plus solar powered and energy efficient! Perfect for us.

it was a beautiful place and stunning locate - it obviously was a real labour of love for them to build.

Wonderful, peaceful and comfortable little place. Cosy evenings by the woodburner, brilliant stars outside and lots of thoughtful touches made lockes cottage a wonderful place to be. Penbryn beach and cafe (5min drive) for miles of golden sands and great homemade cake.

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. The exact charges will be notified to you by the Owner at the time of cancellation and/or can be found in the Owner’s own booking conditions which are available from the Owner on request.

3. Changes and Cancellations by the Owner

We will inform you as soon as reasonably possible if the Owner needs to make a significant change to your confirmed Arrangements or to cancel them. We will also liaise between you and the Owner in relation to any alternative Booking offered by the Owner but we will have no further liability to you.

4. Complaints

Because the contract for your Booking is between you and the Owner, any queries or concerns should be addressed to them. In the event that you have any complaint about your stay, please notify the Owner as soon as possible. If you don’t follow this procedure there will be less opportunity for the Owner to investigate and resolve your complaint and so make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Delays may also mean that amount of compensation you may be entitled to may be reduced. Whether or not your complaint is dealt with satisfactorily, please also contact us as we appreciate all feedback. It’s important to us and the Owner to know that you’ve enjoyed your stay or if anything could have been improved.

5. Pricing

Canopy & Stars reserve the right to amend advertised prices at any time on behalf of the Owner. We also reserve the right to correct errors in both advertised and confirmed prices.Special note: changes and errors sometimes occur.

6. Information & Accuracy

The information and prices shown on this website are varied from time to time and may change between the time you first view a property and make a Booking. You should check that all the details are as you expect prior to making a Booking. It is always possible that, despite our best efforts, some of the properties (including the features and extras available) may be incorrectly described and/or priced. If we discover this is the case after you have made a Booking, we reserve the right to contact you with details of the correct information and/or pricing and will give you the option to:

(1) proceed with the Booking based on the correct information and/or pricing, which may require the payment of an additional amount by you;

(2) subject to availability, change your booking dates to dates when the pricing can be honoured ad so no additional charge to you. In the event that a lower price can be offered for alternative dates then the difference would be refunded;

(3) cancel the Booking. If we do not receive your instructions within 5 days of contacting you, we reserve the right to cancel your Booking without liability to you.

7. Our Responsibility for your Booking

Your contract is with the Owner and its booking conditions apply. As Agent, we accept no responsibility for the actual provision of the Booking. Our responsibilities are limited to making the Booking in accordance with your instructions and acting properly in accordance with our legal duties as an Agent. We accept no responsibility for any information about the Booking that we pass on to you in good faith. However, in the event that we are found liable to you on any basis whatsoever, our maximum liability to you is limited to twice the cost of your Booking (or the appropriate proportion of this if not everyone on the Booking is affected). We do not exclude or limit any liability for death or personal injury that arises as a result of our negligence or that of any of our employees whilst acting in the course of their employment.

8. Pets

Not all properties accept pets. If you wish to take your pet on holiday, please advise us before booking and we can check whether pets are accepted at the property. You must obtain the prior consent of the Owner before taking any pets to the property. A nightly charge may be made by the Owner for each pet and additional terms may apply.

9. VAT

Many of the Owners of properties in the Canopy & Stars portfolio are not registered for VAT in which case no tax is payable. Where VAT is payable, the tax is included in the advertised holiday rental price.

10. Visa, passport and health requirements.

Unless you tell us otherwise, we assume that all members of your party are British citizens who hold or will hold full British passports valid for the entire duration of the Arrangements you chose to purchase. Information on visa, passport and health requirements, where given and applicable, is so given on this basis. Requirements may change and you are therefore strongly recommended to check the up to date position with the Owner of the Booking, Passport Office, appropriate embassy or consulate or your doctor as applicable in good time before the commencement of your holiday.

11. Insurance

You are strongly recommended to take out personal travel insurance for all members of your party. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. Please read your policy details and take them with you on holiday.

12. Special requests

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.
