The Chickenshed - Cabin in Monmouthshire, United Kingdom

Last cache: 10:47:02, Thursday 17 August 2017

Suitable for children of all ages

Pets welcome

A striking cabin, drenched in light with views over open countryside to the Sugar Loaf in the distance (discount for small groups!)

The Chickenshed completely belies its name, which makes for extra wonderment when you approach the stunning red cedar, glass and stainless steel structure. Put your shoes in the boot room and pad barefoot across the heated polished concrete floor. Owner Sue will show you round and explain how some of the space-age kitchen gadgets work. This is the place to truly enjoy cooking a feast (though be prepared to look at your own kitchen with a touch of disappointment when you return home!).

The floor to ceiling glass across the expansive open plan living area creates a constant dramatic connection to the beautiful Wye Valley. It’s all very impressive, but homely too. The cabin’s agricultural roots, like the corrugated roof, and chunky wooden cladding, are kept soft and modern with striking greens, asymmetrical windows, and lights which appear to the float around the glulam beams.

Outside there are two private acres where the kids, big or small, can play safely, and a wood to wander through and gaze up at canopies of ancient trees. When you're sitting around the crackling flames of fire pit on the paved terrace with the bats flapping above, and some sizzling steaks cooking – you'll see you don’t have to do much to make days or evenings here perfectly atmospheric.

Our guests say...

Our stay at The Chickenshed was excellent. Superb location and superbly appointed home. Sue was very helpful with information right from the start and her home cooked food on arrival was delicious and generous. We would highly recommend this as a place to stay but also a model for other hosts. Thank you!

The whole thing was amazing. The place is beautifully done, the location is magical and Sue the owner was a fantastic host. Everything you need is provided, even a home cooked meal awaiting our arrival in the fridge! The location was wonderfully quiet with walks from the door or a massive choice a short drive away. Although located very rurally there are fantastic restaurants within a half hour drive two with Michelin stars, one of which is just 10 mins away.

Lovely location, beautiful house, thoughtful, special touches left by the owners, absolutely brilliant time had by all!

Sian

An immaculate property, fitted to the highest specification. Everything was the best quality from the plentiful linen to the cutlery and equipment in the kitchen. Incredibly well thought out for guests down to the tiniest detail. Very helpful host, would 100% recommend and hope to return.

Sarah

We are a family of 4 (including children of 20 & 18 who need separate bedrooms), plus an elderly dog. Our stay was excellent - we found things to do in the area. Our son was able to do longer distance walks on his own. Meanwhile our daughter chose to stay at base 1 day for A level revision. We ate out 2 nights of 4, including once at a local Michelin starred restaurant we have always wanted to visit. The weather was very kind to us.

AMANDA

We wanted somewhere special to celebrate 30 years of being married and wanted somewhere to be with our family (two sons and respective partners and grandchild). The Chicken Shed was the perfect size and looked amazing online in advance and when we arrived totally lived up to the expectations.

Jonny

We had the most wonderful weekend at The Chickenshed. The location and property were both just perfect, the specifications were second to none and it was clear that a lot of thought went into the design. This was only complimented further by the host Sue who was very prompt in all replies and very accommodating. I can't express enough how wonderful this place is and I would recommend it to any combination of group, there really is something for everyone.

Claire

This place is just Amazing! The quality and detail of this built is second to none. And the deco is is LUSH. Brilliant place for 100% relaxing or a party house. Also it has views to die for !! We didn't want to leave.

Marianne

This was our second stay at the Chickenshed and we loved it as much as we did when we first visited. We pre-ordered some food (which was delicious) but it is the little things like having veg in the freezer plus butter, jam, bread and milk in the fridge and everything necessary to light the wood burner that make Sue an excellent host. The walks from the door are great for dogs and the views from the living room are beautiful. This will not be our last visit

Our stay was wonderful. We stayed the Christmas week and the house was perfect. Beautifully designed and in a beautiful part of the country. The host was very accommodating and couldn't do enough for us.

Romy

We had an absolutely brilliant time. The accommodation was exactly what we were after, perfect for a group. It was clean, spacious, beautifully styled and there were lots of little extras from the host, who was there to greet us and show us around. She was super friendly before hand answering all our questions and helped us to plan the perfect stay - with an early check in and late check out. I only wished we were there for longer, it was so peaceful and relaxing. The kitchen was expertly kitted out with everything you could ever need to cook up a feast..if you even need to with the host offering delicious food also!

I booked the Chicken Shed for 8 of us (ladies) to celebrate my 50th birthday. Correspondence with the lovely owner was good, we were given clear instructions on how to get there etc. and she even gave us information on local attractions while we were there.

We had a wonderful stay. The Chickenshed was impressive and every detail had been thought of, from soft comfortable pillows to thick fluffy towels and local handmade furniture. It looked both stylish and welcoming. There were fresh local eggs and bread and a homemade meal waiting for us when we arrived. The place was clean and bright with its wall of windows showcasing the fabulous view. There was plenty of seating inside and out and a state of the art kitchen with loads of cutlery and crockery and even a Nespresso coffee machine, which made very good coffee! Outside was all fenced and safe for our dogs, who even had their own towels provided! The flint gravel around the property was clean and set off the wooden exterior. There were board games and local guide books and Sue Peacock the owner sent a very detailed email in advance with places of interest to visit and good places to eat nearby, which was very useful. A large flat screen T.V. was available and built into the dividing wall, so not intrusive in the main living area. The local area was picturesque and beautiful and we were lucky with the weather and had very little rain and a good deal of sunshine. All in all a great stay

Fantastic time .. Stunning location and an amazing house with every need catered for

Estelle

We enjoyed a fantastic stay at The Chickenshed despite the inclement weather! The property exceeded all our expectations. Every whim was catered for and Sue, the owner was wonderfully helpful and quick to respond to any queries. The kitchen was fantastically equipped, bathrooms excellent and beds comfortable, two of which had views of the valley below.

Rob

We had an amazing stay at The Chicken Shed - there were 7 girls and it was a lovely long weekend. Sue (the owner) was very easy to contact via email and sent through lots of useful information before we arrived. We were even allowed to check out a bit later! We made unforgettable memories in The Chicken Shed and we are looking to re visit! Do not doubt your decision on this stay, just book it! You wont regret it

The Chickenshed will create ‘shed’ envy in anyone. What a misnomer and what a treat to stay for a couple of nights. This is an incredible cabin and I loved the sense of light and the connection to the outdoors, in something so beautifully designed and contemporary. Monmouthshire is such a great area and we enjoyed exploring with the kids. We were lucky to visit on a bright winters weekend and so went walking, but also a lot of staying in, eating. The kitchen is incredible. And it’s such a lovely space to just relax and read a book. There are tempting mountains to look at from bed, but gentle strolls also. There are great local towns and markets - we even had an amazing organic curry for a mid-morning brunch from Usk farmer’s market – it felt a bit of a strange thing to be eating at 11am, but I would heartily recommend!

Meet your hosts

Meet Sue & Nick!
Sue & Nick moved to the Wye Valley 8 years ago and with the help of local architects Hall & Bednarczyk renovated and extended their higgledy piggledy cottage to make the most of the glorious setting with a light and open space.

When they saw that the dilapidated poultry barn they passed most days on our way to Monmouth, was for sale at auction, and that Hall & Bednarczyk had drawn up plans to convert it into a holiday let, they thought it would be a great opportunity to create another space which would combine their love of good design and craftsmanship. They also wanted to invest in the area – which they have come to love for the peace, the woods and the walks - and to encourage more people to visit by offering an unusual holiday home.  A couple of years on, the Chickenshed is the result.

Nick continues to work in London when he needs to, whilst staying in Monmouthshire as much as he can, and Sue runs the Chickenshed (when she is not walking their two collies.)

Wildlife & the environment:
The Chickenshed is on the Trellech plateau, which forms part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has views across to the Southern fringes of the Black Mountains.

Behind the shed are 2 acres for you to discover – there are bluebells in spring and it is rich with wildlife. From here you can follow the footpath which leads into Parkhouse Wood (itself a Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise

Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?

Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

We accept no responsibility for any information about the Booking that we pass on to you in good faith. However, in the event that we are found liable to you on any basis whatsoever, our maximum liability to you is limited to twice the cost of your Booking (or the appropriate proportion of this if not everyone on the Booking is affected). We do not exclude or limit any liability for death or personal injury that arises as a result of our negligence or that of any of our employees whilst acting in the course of their employment.

8. Pets

Not all properties accept pets. If you wish to take your pet on holiday, please advise us before booking and we can check whether pets are accepted at the property. You must obtain the prior consent of the Owner before taking any pets to the property. A nightly charge may be made by the Owner for each pet and additional terms may apply.

9. VAT

Many of the Owners of properties in the Canopy & Stars portfolio are not registered for VAT in which case no tax is payable. Where VAT is payable, the tax is included in the advertised holiday rental price.

10. Visa, passport and health requirements.

Unless you tell us otherwise, we assume that all members of your party are British citizens who hold or will hold full British passports valid for the entire duration of the Arrangements you chose to purchase. Information on visa, passport and health requirements, where given and applicable, is so given on this basis. Requirements may change and you are therefore strongly recommended to check the up to date position with the Owner of the Booking, Passport Office, appropriate embassy or consulate or your doctor as applicable in good time before the commencement of your holiday.

11. Insurance

You are strongly recommended to take out personal travel insurance for all members of your party. It is your responsibility to ensure that the insurance you purchase is adequate and appropriate for your particular needs. Please read your policy details and take them with you on holiday.

12. Special requests

If you have any special requests (for example dietary requirements, cots or room location), please let us know at the time of booking. We will pass on all such requests to the Owner, but unfortunately, we can't guarantee that they will be met and we will have no liability to you if they are not.

13. Group Bookings

Not all Owners accept Bookings for a single sex group (for example, a stag or hen party). Guests wanting to make such a Booking should check with us beforehand to enable us to check whether the Owner is prepared to accept the Booking. We will then advise you accordingly. In event that an Owner does not accept this type of Booking then it is with regret, that the Booking may be cancelled and cancellation fees may apply. It is the Guest’s responsibility to enquire with Canopy & Stars and/or check on our website beforehand to make sure that this type of booking is permitted.

14. Maximum Numbers

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

16. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These terms and conditions have been drafted in accordance with and are governed by English law and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any and all disputes arising out of these Agency Terms & Conditions.

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.

18. Validity clause

In the event that a court finds that a condition in these Agency Terms & Conditions is illegal or void, the illegal or void provision will be severed from the remainder of the Agency Terms & Conditions, which will continue to be valid and have full force and effect.
