Living Room

Suitable for children aged 4 and over

Not suitable for pets

The treehouses are perfect for children aged 4 - 16. Younger children are also welcome, but please be aware that the treehouses are up to 30 ft off the ground. A day bed is available for a third child if required. Sorry, pets cannot be accommodated.

Come and live in the trees! A return to the simple life awaits you, thirty feet off the floor...

*Please note the treehouse names are for show only. You will be allocated your treehouse on arrival, based on suitability – some treehouses are more challenging to get to and others are more suited to families with young children, but each as magical and impressive as the next.*

Deep in the heart of the Welsh Mountains, in a wooded secret valley, you'll find five chic and secluded treehouses, designed and built by their imaginative owners. After a short hike up through the woods (bring boots, and pack light!) you'll spy a dramatic spiral staircase, at the top of which is the main living space: a futuristic curved pod, with a double and bunk beds sleeping four altogether. Completely off-grid and built on low-impact floating joints that keep the trees from harm, it’s the sort of place you can just lose yourself in - simple and beautiful. Great fun for kids but blissful for two, each treehouse has a living/dining space with kitchen and an outdoor terrace as well. The wood-burner sits right in the middle, spreading warmth not only to the space, but also to the water. The piping hot spring water shower is down below the treehouse and the clever Swedish separating compost loo is on a platform across a walkway from the deck.

Great for outdoorsy folk, the area around the Living Room is criss-crossed with great walking trails crossing gorgeous mixed woodland, streams and fantastic mountain walks - and there’s a lovely pub 20 minutes' walk away if you don’t feel like cooking. This is a simply amazing place to come and unwind whether you hike through the hills or just sit back on the deck and listen to the wind in the treetops.

Getting there

Living Room Treehouses, Cemmaes, Machynlleth, Powys

Main gate: ///saga.regulator.collapsed

By public transport

The nearest bus stop is in Cemmaes (1 mile away) and the nearest train station is in Machynlleth. Pick ups can be arranged.

By car

BEWARE SAT NAV! - The postcode of the nearest farm is SY20 9PZ, but you should see signs for the treehouse when you get close enough. Please don't go to the farm.

Before you get that near, follow the A458 from Shrewsbury to Welshpool. From Welshpool (still on the A458) follow signs for Machynlleth. After 45 minutes you will find Mallwyd village. At the roundabout join the A470 (signed Machynlleth). After about 10 minutes, you'll arrive at the village of Cemmaes. Pass the Penrhos pub (on your left) and take the first left (not signposted). Follow the country road for about a mile and turn right to Bryn Meurig. By now you should see the signs!

Your treehouse will be allocated to you when you arrive, but do let Mark know in advance if you have any specific requirements. Being met on arrival and led through the woods to your treehouse (while it's still light enough to appreciate the walk!) is all part of the Living Room experience, so please do arrive for your allocated time slot, between 3pm and 4pm, and let Mark know as soon as possible if you foresee any problems with this.

Food & Drink

At the Living Room

The treehouse is a self catering experience and you'll need to bring all your own food. There are gas hobs for cooking and a clever "fridge" made out of a couple of plant pots that's big enough to hold the essentials.

Pubs & Restaurants

The Pen Rhos Pub (1 mile) - Good pub food at a walkable distance.

The Brigands Inn (7 miles) - Turn right when you get to Cemmaes and drive for 5 miles until you get to the traffic island. Really good pub food.

The Wynnstay Inn (Machynlleth, 8 miles) - Slightly finer dining and a very nice pizzeria out the back

Top Shop (11 miles) Also in Machynlleth, award winning fish & chips

The Riverside (11 miles) On the way to Aberdovey, a good new addition to the area

The Penhelig Pub (Aberdovey 18 miles) - Great fresh fish dishes

There are wonderful walks starting at your treehouse! You'll find maps provided for you.
1. Walk to the Top of the World - a wonderful 2 1/2 hour circular walk, perfect for all ages - with amazing views over the mountains of southern Snowdonia. The walk includes part of the magnificent Glyndwr's Way long distance foot path - with lots of gorgeous places for a picnic!
2. Walk to Power Mountain (Moel Eiddew) - a must for both serious hikers, and amateur adventurers alike! - peaking at 2000ft, with views over the Dyfi Valley Biosphere, Cadair Idris and out to sea - a truly magical place.
3. Walk to the Pen Rhos Pub - our lovely local is just a mile away, and serves food all day! A pretty walk through woods and across fields!

Machynlleth is a short hop away and has a range of cafés, restaurants and shops. It's pronounced Ma-hunk-leth and was once the stronghold of the legendary Welsh prince Owain Glyndwr. In the 60s "Mach" was in the running to become the new Welsh capital, but was pipped at the post by some place called Cardiff.

If you're keen on railways, check out the Talylln Railway (in Tywyn) and the Fairbourne Railway. Also in Tywyn is the nearest cinema (just 22 miles away), worth a mention here because the owners are actually your hosts at the treehouse. It's a lovely old Victorian building with a great bar, and you can take your drink in to the movie!

The treehouse project

Living Room treehouses are built on the scenic Bryn Meurig Farm - a 200 acres organic sheep farm, deep in the heart of the Welsh hills.
Peter, Mark, Carly and Julia design, build and look after the treehouses - and their backgrounds in architecture, product design, customer service and interior design have led to the creation of these breathtaking homes in the trees.

The design

The treehouses are built on floating joints, allowing them to remain attached to the tree but move very little, even in high wind. The timber is mainly larch, with a little red cedar, and all of it is locally sourced. The inside is designed with strong oval ribs and a lightweight timber cladding, keeping it light and aiding the stability of the overall structure. In time, the matting on the roof will grow with moss and the treehouse will blend in even more with its surroundings. The treehouses are all completely off grid, giving you a chance to experience nature from a height and in style.

  • Overview

Our guests say...

Loved it. Treehouse, wildlife, hot tub in the woods. Re-tuning and conversation. Painting and walks. Just lovely.

Despite the weather our stay was amazing, and if anything, the rain gave us the perfect excuse to soak in the hot tub for 3 hours! The sounds of the surrounding area and the tranquil setting were ideal for a relaxing few days away. Bliss! (but with a sense of adventure of course)

It was magical, we couldn't have asked for more. Friendly hosts greeted us on arrival and took us to our tree house where we were happily left to explore. Wonderful being without electricity and mobile phones and living a simpler life for the weekend. The tealights were so pretty on arrival. Hot tub was a bonus too. I love the fact that each tree house is secluded in its own area. I really think this is a wonderful place.

On a wet weekend in September I can't imagine staying in a more welcoming, cozy and unusual place; 30ft up in a treehouse with tealights, a wood burning stove and no electricity. What's not to like? Time to unwind, rediscover simple pleasures and spend quality time with the family. A perfect antidote to the 21st century.

Amazing. Rainy weather but cosy. Great introduction to the place. Nice to be left alone. Loved the bridge and the log burner.

Wonderful tree house. Beautifully built, and very cosy. The site was well thought out in that you couldn't see any other tree house, and each had it's own path and bridge so you didn't feel overlooked. Welcomed by friendly people, good supply of logs for the fire, and not far to walk to a cosy little pub.

Such an incredible experience! Brilliant time away to unwind and relax. I booked this 8 months ago as a surprise for my partner and it exceeded my expectations. Truly something unique and wonderful... We will be returning!

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
