La Palombière - Treehouse in Gironde, France

Last cache: 09:25:55, Saturday 21 October 2017

Château Lestange

Suitable for children of all ages

Not suitable for pets

Up to 3 children can sleep in the loft on bean bags. Pets cannot be accommodated.

A magnificent treehouse in the heart of wine country near Bordeaux. Dine overlooking the vines...

Head south, like the migratory palombes which give this luxurious perch its name. A magnificent treehouse has newly grown up in the woods of Château Lestange, a traditional French manor house 12km from Bordeaux. La Palombière is made of red cedar and Douglas fir, decked with fresh flowers, sumptuous linen and touches of antiquity (the doorknobs are borrowed from the historic château), but kitted out with a wood-burner and a super shower for supreme comfort. A canopy bed with sparkling fairy lights (and the option of champagne in the fridge bar) make it a wonderful place for couples, but discover the trapdoor up to the mezzanine level and you might wish you'd brought the kids. Upstairs, they'll find an attic with camping beds (for no more than three little ones or two teenagers, or space gets tight) a TV to practise their French, and the best views of all.

You’ll be excellently taken care of, waking to breakfast at the château (or delivered to you if you're staying in July or August) and whilst there’s no kitchen, there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Despite being wonderfully close to the historic city of Bordeaux and its transport links, you are in the heart of wine country here, surrounded by tumbling hillside villages and beautiful landscapes. Make the most of it – and don’t forget to bring a couple of bottles back home!

Our guests say...

Absolutely amazing! The treehouse itself was beautifully made, superb views, luxury bed and shower and our children loved the attic bedroom. However, what set it way above other stays was the hospitality of Marie and Eric for breakfasts and the incredible Sunday evening dinner which was presented on an 'honesty bar' basis because local restaurants were all closed. Proximity to Bordeaux and hundreds of vineyards also a big advantage.

It was magical! We stayed in the tree house for two nights with our two small children who loved it at much as we did. The bed was luxurious, Eric our host was friendly and helpful and even cooked a delicious meal for us. Try his wine too! Wonderful.... the best holiday we've ever had

Eric and his team were truly wonderful. The hospitality was exceptionally good and if we needed anything, we only had to ask. The meals that Eric and Gerard prepared for us were exquisite and the setting - well - it was breathtaking. An absolute treasure. The treehouse suited our family of five well and the bigger children (age 10 and 7) loved their trapdoor-hidden haven. The woodland and vineyards were beautiful and we had a brilliant five days' stay. We would recommend Bordeaux for day trips and had a lovely day at the coast - Lacanau - which was only 35minutes away. A beautiful retreat in a luxurious setting. Thank you Eric - you made us feel so welcome and we loved staying with you.

We've just returned from the most amazing stay at Chateau Lestrange... it was everything we hoped it would be and more. From the amazingly well preserved seventeenth century chateau to the beautiful vineyard views. We stayed the treehouse which was overlooked the vines and every detail had been though of, from the power shower to star lightning above the canopied bed. Erik and Anne-Marie were the perfect hosts... Anne-Marie's breakfast's in the chateau kitchen were scrummy and she was very helpful in arranging activities and visits so definitely worth emailing her beforehand. Erik's feasts using local produce were worthy of a Michelin star and accompanied by his terrific wines (do not miss either). We had two wonderful meals with him and his friends who were super lovely and extremely understanding of our attempts to speak French. We can't thank them enough for making our weekend so special. We would totally recommend staying here and we'll definitely be going back to Chateau Lestange.

We had a wonderful stay and my kids had the most fabulous time in the magical treehouse. It is set in the middle of a vineyard and Marie and Eric were more than happy to oblige is with a few bottles of wine which made the stay for the adults all the more fun too. Magical place and very warm, wonderful hosts.

Amazing experience. Our three teen boys fitted easily in the loft; one declared he wished he lived there - he has always been happiest up a tree!! Can hardly find words to describe being there. It really was the Magic Faraway Tree come alive!! Everything about it was magical - the warm welcome, immediate drinks (wine from the vineyards we were sat in!!) picnic delivered by beach buggy, eating on its terrace, lighting the fire just for the fun of it, shower - amazingly posh! - and gorgeous bed...WOW. Sunrise the next morning was so beautiful. Have never stayed anywhere better!!

I planed this trip for my girlfriend and myself over valentines weekend. From the beginning we were overwhelmed with the hospitality and treehouse. We were welcomed in like part of the family. We hadn't eaten and arrived late but this wasn't an issue - food cooked up specifically for us. The treehouse we stayed in was out of this world 5*. The setting was perfect, we only woke up to the view and that again was remarkable. Breakfast was served in the main chateau then we were given any information needed to get around. We then had our valentines dinner and that will be an evening never to forget! The service, food and company was brilliant. I would recommend this place to anybody without a shadow of a doubt and great value for money.

Our stay was wonderful. The setting is beautiful and the treehouse was everything I expected and more - comfortable, clean, cosy and romantic. The owners and everybody we met were extremely accommodating and kind. We came away feeling very relaxed.

We had a very relaxing overnight stay in la Palombiere tree house. The attention to detail was very impressive and the tree house managed to feel both cosy and luxurious. My girls loved their loft room and slept with the blinds open so they could see the stars. We had a reasonable early flight but our lovely hostess managed to put together a lovely breakfast for us, and delivered it the night before We wish we could have stayed longer.

This is a very quaint cabin set in the corner of a wood overlooking vineyards and Bordeaux in the distance. The welcome we recieved, the horse riding, cycling, wine tasting and not to mention the send off we recieved was all brilliant and very friendly. I would recommend this place highly!

I booked this treehouse for my boyfriend as a surprise and I can honestly say it’s one of the best places we have ever stayed. The treehouse itself was stunning, the beautiful photos don’t even do it enough justice. The power shower, the beautiful secluded setting, the 4 poster bed etc was paradise. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel like one of the family. Ann-Marie went out of her way to help us with anything we needed and went above and beyond, even giving us a lift into town which would have cost around 50 Euros in a taxi. The food prepared by chef Eric was faultless, I’m vegetarian and usually struggle to find anything to eat in France apart from bread and cheese and he cooked me some gorgeous tapas dishes from scratch, always making sure my wine glass (delicious wine from a local vineyard) was fully topped. My boyfriend was also spoilt for choice with all the meat and fish dishes noting it was some of the best food he had ever tasted. Finally, an extra special thank you to Nicholas who helped me conquer my fear of horse riding. I had a severe accident 20 years ago whilst horse riding and had not been back on a horse since, but felt like I would be missing out by

"Oh wow what a fantastic place to stay! [...] A lovely lady called Susana looked after us, and whilst she didn't speak English and we don't speak that much French, we managed to communicate enough. The treehouse was beautiful. The gorgeous, comfortable 4 poster bed, the fun loft for children (my two loved it!), the lovely shower! And the AMAZING breakfast! Homemade yoghurt, homemade jams (all delicious) warm croissants and bread, coffee and orange juice - all delivered by Susana. The view of the vineyard, the tasty bottle of wine we had given to us.....everything!

After the treehouse we spent a night in an expensive hotel in Bordeaux, and whilst it was nice, we all agreed we would have preferred another night in the treehouse! And not even the hotels breakfast beat the one we were delivered in the tree house! We will be recommending the treehouse highly to all our friends, and really hope we will visit it again!"

"Our stay was wonderful, the cabane was clean and well equipped ( with also a bottle of wine produced by the owner). Our guests were helpful finding a restaurant nearby ( as it was quite late ). The location near Bordeaux is easy to reach and from there you can reach the town center catching the tram (clean and always on time) without parking problems. Definitely a place to recommend."

Silvia

"Our stay at La Palombiere in the wonderful Chateau Lestange was magic from start to finish. We were welcomed by a very friendly lady who took us to our maison dans l'arbres which far exceeded our dreams, with a four poster bed (!), fabulous shower and proper loo...as well as the wonderful chamber upstairs where the children slept, above a trap door, nestling in the branches of the tree. We loved having breakfast in the Chateau, setting a precedent for chocolat chaud every morning henceforth, with lovely croissants and homemade yoghurt. On our last day we had breakfast in the treehouse itself, which was very romantic, looking over the vineyard. Eric Charmet, our host, invited us to sample local wines including his own highly desirable La Villa Ferret, which is a seriously good rosé winning all kinds of awards. We had the wine tasting in his home next to the chateau itself, and were provided a mini education in wine, via Franglais and my very rusty french. We spent a day at the nearby Dune de Pilat, which was incredible, and I'd recommend it to anyone staying here as a day trip. We also spent a very nice evening at a local restaurant, Cafe De l'esperance. All in all, this was a memorable and inspiring stay, and we would love to go back for more! Great for couples and families, or even reclusive folk who want to hide in a tree for a few days writing a book..."

"We had a really great time, despite indifferent weather for the time of year.  The treehouse certainly had a luxury feel, with really comfortable bed, luxury shower and lovely view over the vineyard!  The log fire was both cozy and comforting.  The welcome from the owners was warm and friendly and we could not have asked for more personal care and attention.  We definitely recommend the whole C&S concept and this fabulous site in particular.  Thanks to Eurostar and Canopy & Stars for the opportunity."

"Wonderful, magical..perfect in every way.  Our host was very nice, breakfast was great..fresh orange juice, fresh yoghurt, coffee, tea, croissant, bread etc... all brought to our beautiful treehouse terrace.  Enough shelter on the terrace to have breakfast in the rain one morning.  Children loved the loft and bean bag beds (might not be so comfortable for any child over 12 because they would be too big.)  The whole place was full of charm and simple beauty."

03/08/2012

Julia

"The treehouse was magical, tastefully and thoughtfully designed with beautiful fittings with fabulously comfortable bed. The loft room for the children with giant bean bags, complete with DVD / TV was great.  It was a real pleasure to sit on the terrace and enjoy a chilled glass of Rose in splendid isolation but without being far from the children.  Breakfast delivered to the terrace the following morning was also a delight."

Deirdre

"We loved it. The family who owned it went out of their way to pick us up from the airport and ensure all our desires were meet. They made us coffee before they drove us home. We have never had such a love filled holiday."

Further afield, the l'Entre-deux-Mers region is between the two great rivers of the Garonne and the Dordogne. If even that's too strenuous, meditate in a green space surrounded by 45 grand plane trees, originally planted by the family as a quiet place for reflection after mass in the estate's chapel.

Horse rides in the Entre Deux Mers Regions :

-        Two hours ride : 50 €/person

-        Two hours ride and wine tasting at different Chateaux 100 €/person

Art and culture

You are perfectly positioned to visit two UNESCO world heritage sites: Bordeaux with its splendid 18th century quayside, and Saint-Emilion, the quaint town tumbling down a hillside surrounded by famous wine-producing estates. Wine-tasting tours are a must. If you drink more white than red, Sainte Croix du Mont and its famous white wines is a short trip from the château. Cross the Garonne river and you can discover the Graves region with its unique dry white wines.

Artistic and cultural events are regularly organised, so do check the calendar for news on what's on.

Wellness

60 minutes Californian wellness massage: 50€ (to be booked in advance)

Food & Drink

At Chateau Lestange

Breakfast is usually served at the chàteau, or in July and August you can opt to have a breakfast basket delivered to you with delicious fresh croissants that you can eat outside on the balcony. Tea and coffee are provided, but there are no kitchen facilities in the treehouse, so you'll have to eat out at one of the many lovely local restaurants. A wine cellar in a treehouse may sound strange, but your hosts, Eric and Anne-Marie, are true connoisseurs and would be pleased to arrange fine local wines and chilled champagne to await your arrival, according to your taste and budget.

Local restaurants

There are restaurants easily accessible by foot in the local village. There is a new restaurant just 300m away.

Cafe de l'Esperance, Bouliac (15min drive) serves grilled meats and traditional French bistro cuisine as well as having a great view of Bordeaux

The estate

Commanding a view over the broad Garonne river, the château was built in 1645. It inherited the site of a post-house and pilgrims' refuge en route to the famous Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where dusty travellers would rest in the peaceful, shady woods nearby. Visitors have been welcomed here for even longer: a freshwater well existed here as early as 1534, next to the old Roman road. Later, the aristocracy of Bordeaux built beautiful villas in the area, and fled here en masse to escape the stifling summer heat of the Bordeaux marshes.

In 1834, the Charmet-Thomas family returned from ‘L'île Bourbon’ – now the French department of La Réunion - and brought the warmth of the Tropics into this magnificent manor house, to transform it into their family home. The paintings of three-masted galleons which hang above the stairs hint at a love of adventure in far-off lands, and the louvred fanlights echo the shade much sought after in the Tropics. The new treehouse project, and the rooms and gîtes featured in the Alastair Sawday's guides, share the spirit of the château itself: beauty and calmness reigns over the whole of Lestange, making it somewhere guests love to stay and return to. Today the estate covers twelve hectares, five of which are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grapes. It's an exciting time for the vineyard: gradually converting to organic farming, the estate is also steadily being replanted with grapes. One hectare of new Merlot is springing up already, and the grape varieties are just being chosen for a new, high quality ‘terroir’ white wine.

The wine

Château Lestange produces a red AOC Premières Côtes de Bordeaux. The wine is currently produced and marketed by the famous Caves de Quinsac (very close and worth a visit) but soon the wine of the château will once again be produced at home. Traditionally the 'terroir' (a French word meaning the local conditions which lend a unique quality to the wine) is legendary here. In 1874 the edition of Féret, bible of Bordeaux wines, wrote "the Lestange Domaine covers 33 hectares, 12 of which are situated on a hillside with clay-limestone soil and clay-gravel soil on rock and dedicated to vines. This vineyard is planted exclusively with Malbec, Merlot and Verdot and produces a much sought-after wine, regarded as one of the best in the area."

Wildlife and environmental policy

The treehouse is discreetly hidden in the trees of the ancient wood, overlooking the vineyard, which itself is in the process of converting to organic farming. The treehouse is fully plumbed in, however all waste and water goes into a specially-designed biofiltration tank buried at the foot of the treehouse. The sustainable red cedar and Douglas fir used in the construction of the treehouse are sourced from France, and have been treated in an eco-friendly way.

Getting there

Château Lestange, 33360 Quinsac, Aquitaine, France

La Palombière is easily accessible by car, train, ferry or plane, 12km from the transport hub of Bordeaux. You may find a car useful for getting around the area once you've arrived. A translator can be arranged if you need one too.

By ferry

LD Lines go from Portsmouth to Le Havre and Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo (closest), Caen or Cherbourg.

By train

Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris. The TGV from Paris to Bordeaux takes 3 hours. (Bear in mind you can book through journeys from your local UK station to Bordeaux.) From Bordeaux station to Quinsac, taxis take around 15-20 minutes.

By plane

Bordeaux airport is very close, around 20 minutes away by car or taxi.

By car

If you're arriving by train or air, car hire is available in Bordeaux.

If you're taking the car ferry (above) or Eurotunnel, head for Bordeaux. From Bordeaux, take ring-road ('rocade') exit No. 22a for Latresne Cadillac on the D10. At the Quinsac roundabout, take the sign for the village centre, 'Centre Bourg.' The château is situated about 200m further on the left, before you reach the village. The entrance is through a large gate underneath a porch set into the wall which will open authomatically on your (slow!) approach. Please text, call or email in advance with your estimated time of arrival. Guest parking is to the left, then round to the right, following the signs.

It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs.
