Overview
It’s easy to let the day drift away at Amelie, as you lounge on the sofa with a cup of tea, watching the tide ebb and flow, the boats potter up and down and the light constantly shift on the Penryn River. The open plan space with huge corner windows is a perfect suntrap and you can wander out onto one of the decks for yoga or a nap, maybe take the rowing boat out to the nature reserve just down-river or watch wading birds dibbling for food on the mud banks at low tide - even the occasional inquisitive seal. Make the difficult choice between heading down to Falmouth or … just putting the kettle on again
Downstairs, (but still above the waterline!) you’ll find space and comfort for all the family with three cabins and a bathroom (with shower, double ended bath and composting toilet). Robin and Jane, creators of barge Amelie, have put the same enormous amount of care into limiting the impact on the environment as they have into the comfort of their guests. Biomass heating, rain water harvesting, electricity all from renewable sources and reclaimed and local wood are just some of the ways Amelie minimises her impact on the environment.
The quay is public access and neighbours the popular Muddy Beach Café, so you may occasionally see people wander past your window, but the activity of the harbour around you generally just adds to the nautical feel of the experience. Inside, with the wood-pellet stove going and the windows closed, the boat is a haven of peace. When you’re ready for adventure, take Jane and Robin’s tips on their favourite beaches and coastal walks, explore the town of Falmouth, just a 30-minute walk away, or get out on the water and go paddleboarding, surfing or sailing.
Amelie is a calm and contemplative space and not suitable for hen, stag or party groups.

Wildlife & Environment
Barge Amelie is moored next to eco-development, Jubilee Wharf in the heart of Penryn, one of the oldest market towns in Cornwall and just up the estuary from the arty, coastal town of Falmouth. The converted barge is moored in a quiet stretch of water, with a handful of neighbouring boats and captivating views down Penryn River towards Falmouth and Flushing, on the opposite side of the water.
Penryn River is tidal, with the barge spending some of the day on the riverbed, surrounded by mud, a haven for bird life. When the tide is out, you will see many birds including redshanks, egrets, curlews, kingfishers, godwits, cormorants, little grebes (dabchicks) etc. There is a set of binoculars for your use and a bird book for information. Seals will sometimes venture up the creek to peep into the windows! You will hear the curlews calling and the impressive sound of swans taking off and landing on the water.
Robin and Jane have crafted Amelie to use low energy, low impact technologies. These include wood pellet biomass heating from the pellet boiler stove, solar thermal hot water heating with a thermal store, a composting toilet and 100% renewables electricity tariff. Rain water is harvested, filtered and UV treated, with eco-friendly Faith in Nature and Ecover toiletries and cleaning products supplied to ensure water drained into the river does not damage the environment.
Materials used within barge Amelie are recycled and locally sourced, with all flooring downstairs reclaimed maple from a gym in Nottingham, a refurbished biomass boiler and thermal store, lining upstairs all scrap packaging and cladding untreated Cornish larch.
Our guests say...
Wonderfully unusual property, that works like clockwork. The views were fantastic from every aspect. We need to go back to see the seals looking in at the windows at you.

Sitting with a cup of tea on the sofa with the picturesque view down Penryn River towards Falmouth is all you'll need to keep occupied for hours. The eco barge feels like home the moment you disembark the quay and step aboard, as you ease into the rhythm of life on the water, slowly rising and falling with the tide. I'd highly recommend a visit to the Pandora Inn via water taxi, hiring paddleboards over at Gylly Beach in Falmouth and heading up to the North Cornish coast to experience the wild Atlantic.

Booking Terms
Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)
What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

Your Booking with us is subject to these Agency Terms & Conditions and any specific booking conditions of the relevant Owner(s) you contract with. The Owner’s booking conditions may limit and/or exclude the Owner’s liability to you.

The price charged in total for more than one Booking will always equal the prices charged separately for each individual Booking. All Bookings are available to be purchased separately at the same price as they are when more than one Booking is made. This means that any multiple Bookings do not constitute a package as defined in the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992.
By making a booking, you agree that:-

The Owner may charge cancellation or amendment charges in accordance with its own booking conditions, however for the sake of convenience only, we have outlined the Owner’s charges at clause 2.3 and 2.4 below. Because the contract for your Booking is between you and the Owner, any queries or concerns should be addressed to them. In the event that you have any complaint about your stay, please notify the Owner as soon as possible.
