Deep in the heart of the Welsh Mountains, in a wooded secret valley, there are six chic and secluded treehouses at the Living Room, designed and built by their imaginative owners. After a short hike up through the woods (bring boots, and pack light!) you'll spy a dramatic spiral staircase, at the top of which is the main living space: a futuristic curved pod, with a double and bunk beds sleeping four altogether. Completely off-grid and built on low-impact floating joints that keep the trees from harm, it’s the sort of place you can just lose yourself in - simple and beautiful. Great fun for kids but blissful for two, each treehouse has a living/dining space with kitchen and an outdoor terrace as well. The wood-burner sits right in the middle, spreading warmth not only to the space, but also to the water. The piping hot spring water shower is down below the treehouse and the clever Swedish separating compost loo is on a platform across a walkway from the deck.

Great for outdoorsy folk, the area around the Living Room is criss-crossed with great walking trails crossing gorgeous mixed woodland, streams and fantastic mountain walks - and there’s a lovely pub 20 minutes' walk away if you don’t feel like cooking. This is a simply amazing place to come and unwind whether you hike through the hills or just sit back on the deck and listen to the wind in the treetops.

Our guests say...

We arrived on the Sunday, and we met as soon as we arrived. Made to feel welcome straight away, and left to ourselves in the fabulous tree house. What a great place, even better than we thought it would be. Beautifully made, with many thoughtful touches, and the location was perfect. And the squirrel. Machynlleth and the surrounding area is beautiful with lots to do if you are prepared to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

My husband daughter and I stayed for three nights in the beautiful treehouse. It was a great chance to relax and play games and laugh all surrounded by the trees and inquisitive squirrels. The outdoor shower heated by the wood burning stove was amazing and enjoyable even in the pouring rain. Having no electricity was also great and we were able to switch off in a way that isn't always possible. Everything felt like an adventure- even crossing the wobbly bridge to the compost toilet. It is a gorgeous treehouse and creates an environment where relaxation and appreciation for the beautiful surroundings are unavoidable. It would be great for families but also as a romantic retreat.

This was our first experience at the tree house. We absolutely loved it. Children loved exploring the area walking by the stream. All of us enjoyed the hot tub. Great experience. The tree house was cosy and charming. Great memories and we will be coming back soon!

A magical escape in a glorious location to celebrate early retirement! Despite the absence of electricity and plumbed 'facilities', it was exceptionally comfortable, spacious and secluded. I could not think of a better way to escape and rediscover what is important (and what is not).

Following the directions that were emailed to us, The Living Room was very easy to find. We arrived and were greeted by Mark, who helped us load our bags onto a rickshaw. We then crossed the sheep farm to a wood where a steep climb greeted us. Mark pointed through the trees to our treehouse which was perched amongst a sea of bluebells. Absolutely stunning! Once we settled in and Mark showed us the ropes (literally and figuratively), we left the treehouse only to go on a couple of the walks that were very clearly mapped out by a treehouse-specific guide. The treehouse has the perfect balance between minimalism and functionality, allowing guests to 'disconnect' and truly unwind without losing the comforts of everyday life.

We LOVED it. My fiance is very outdoorsy, me not so much, but Iwanted to do something he would love for his birthday. And he did. The weather on our first night was a bit dicey - very windy which meant we didn't get a wink of sleep but it all added to the experience!! We (he) loved the wood chopping, the outdoor shower, and just the peacefulness of it all.

Fantastic concept, beautiful surroundings, a relaxing and wonderful break

The tree house is beautiful and surprisingly cosy. I loved the peace and quiet and the surrounding area is gorgeous. I even enjoyed chopping wood! The pub nearby is nice and food was gorgeous. The last night was topped off by the amazing view of the sky you can see.....I've never seen stars like it. There's lots of information on leaflets in the house with some great ideas of places to visit.
