Nest at Leewood - Safari tent in Devon, United Kingdom

Wake up to forest views from the super king-sized bed of this eclectic hideaway in your own private corner of a creative, crafty farm

Follow the river down from the medieval bridge at Huckworthy and youʼll find Nest, south-facing and appropriately nestled into the bottom of a steep wooded hillside. The tent is unique, well-insulated and sheltered in its own private meadow, and adorned with antique tapestries and quirky furniture, and then there's the bed - super king-sized with a sumptuous vintage silk canopy. Sheepskins and a wood burning stove allow you to keep your space cosy just as your ancestors would have. Outside you have a fire pit for some cast iron camp fire cooking or head into the woodland kitchen, a 'living willow' structure with running water and gas hobs. You're off grid but a solar panel powers light and USB chargers. While the tin bath and camouflaged compost loo are nearby you may prefer to stroll 200 metres up to the yard for shared modern wet rooms, underfloor heating, more phone charging points and free Wi-Fi.

Leewood is right on the river Walkham and the perfect base for exploring Dartmoor. Bring or hire a bike for the granite trails (or the National Cycle Route 274) or go walking over the moors. Alternatively you can stay on site and go wild swimming in the river, where there's also fishing to be had, or there are workshops on offer on Thursdays, focusing on the three main principles of tranquillity, sustainability and creativity.

Our guests say...

The Nest was perfect, magical and cosy. We had everything we needed there and didn't need to leave the site once. It was the perfect escape and Nick and Ryan were so welcoming and helpful. Even though it rained heavily, it didn't ruin our time spent there at all. I would highly recommend staying here.

We had an amazing time at the Nest. It was everything we hoped for and more. Beautifully furnished and comfortable. Quirky, mystic and enlightening. Amazingly peaceful and calming surroundings. Our host were lovely kind, gentle people.

This was such an incredible stay! My first time using Canopy and the Stars and it really was just the perfect get away adventure. Nick and Ryan were so unbelievably nice and organized - they had everything on hand we could have possible asked for! The Nest was a truly magical and special get away

Lovely, very peaceful place to spend time. A real camping experience but with the comfort of a nice bed, dry, warm and spacious tent. Lovely kitchen and camp fire. River to swim in, and a whole field to yourself, completely private. Off grid, but the grid is not far away if you need it. Absolutely fantastic place.

We had the most amazing time here! We were blessed with gorgeous weather and the Nest is totally idylic, secluded and romantic. Think fur throws, sheepskin rugs, silk saris, candle lanterns, log burners and feather duvets... the ultimate place to chill out and unwind, no one to disturb you and just open wild meadow in front of you. It truly was exactly what we hoped it would be. Perfect for a little weekend away. Nick and Ryan were wonderful and we arrived to home made cake :) there is a deep pool in the river for swimming and the Nest is filled with everything you need. Highly recommended for a quirky and unusual place to stay.

What a wonderful location. Perfect hosts. Nick and Ryan were great with the meet and greet, and then left us to our privacy. We knew how to find them if needed. The Nest itself was cosy and warm when we got the wood burner going. The super king bed was the biggest we have ever slept in! Very comfortable. Had a campfire a couple of nights and the outdoor kitchen had everything we needed to make our meals in.

Absolutely beautiful. It was like something out of a fairytale.

We had the most amazing stay at the Nest. It was a total escape from all the stresses of life. Being off grid was fantastic with no interruptions. Nick and Ryan were welcoming and had thought of ever little detail. Chocolate cake, a friendly smile and fresh eggs greeted us after a rainy drive. The Nest was warm, clean and quirky. The wood burner in the corner made us feel toasty and there was plenty of extra blankets and throws if we needed them. Local information, walks were all provided. The outdoor kitchen by the tent had everything you could think of and the wet room up at the main building was clean and had a great hot shower.

Nick and Ryan were generous hosts who went out of their way to make us feel looked after. We really felt part of their beautiful home. The attention to detail and creativity behind all the decisions at the Nest is an inspiration. There are even blankets and jumpers and slippers for you at the Nest so when you arrive you can just drop your bags and get snug. Nick will help set up your fire too... so, if you're as urban as me, fear not! There was a perfect balance of being secluded where our tent was but welcome around the 'base camp' a short walk away where we so enjoyed lots of lovely chats and helping ourselves to delicious homemade ginger and chocolate cake! There wouldn't be anything we would have changed: nick and Ryan have thought of everything you could need so, you can just relax and enjoy! Can't wait to come back again soon. Thank you.

Nick and Ryan made us feel really welcome and were very chilled out, friendly and helpful. It was so amazing to get to stay somewhere where you were really secluded in your own field! We felt like we could really relax and loved that we were completely alone - unless we walked to the top where the car was parked and the shop, hot showers and toilet were. How the tent was decorated was so cool and hippy! We loved making our own fire and keeping it warm and cosy inside our tent at night with the log burner. So much detail had been put into the outside kitchen and we really felt like we were so lucky to get to stay somewhere so special and fairytale like! :)

Incredible weekend, would go back in a heartbeat! Nick has thought of everything, lovely and relaxing weekend far away from the hustle and bustle, she did everything to make our stay enjoyable and would 100% recommend

As soon as we arrived at the yard of this almost-too-picturesque little farm we knew we were in for a special weekend. A very warm reception from Nick & Ryan (which included a specially baked chocolate cake w/ clotted cream) and a clear, concise run through of the need-to-knows set us up nicely for the following 3 nights. It's hard not to be inspired by the attention to detail the pair have put into this magical little retreat; you really do forget that the real world exists for a few days. Everything from the perfectly arranged kitchen nestled into the tree line, to the various bits and bobs of antique decor and 5 star comfort king sized bed in the (generously sized!) tent, goes a long way to make you feel very well looked after. Nick & Ryan were always very happy and helpful whenever consulted but are also more than okay to leave you to your own devices. Not even a solid day of drizzle could dampen our spirits, the tent is just too cosy, especially when you get the wood burner going! All in all it was a perfect way to spend our anniversary, literally couldn't have asked for more. Gabriel & Rosie.

We had the most wonderful weekend at the Nest in the beautiful surroundings of Leewood. We couldn't have possibly asked or needed for more. Nick and Ryan had thought of everything and created a magical place and had even laid on additional special touches such as a freshly baked cake, and their chicken's fresh eggs. The huge bed in the yurt was extremely comfortable, the compost loo was cleaner than most loos! The woodland kitchen was fully kitted out not to mention the fire pit and wood burning stove! We couldn't recommend this place more highly. We will be returning.

The Nest is totally magical. Sumptuously decorated yet totally rustic. All the delights of camping but none of the hardship! And so secluded. Little touches like cake and clotted cream on arrival and a bread maker up at the main building so you can make your own fresh bread make it even more special and the owners are super friendly, helpful and welcoming while leaving you firmly to your own devices.

We had a fantastic time at the nest! Our hosts were lovely and provided everything we needed for the weekend. The camping area felt really remote and super luxurious. It felt a million miles away from camping. I couldn't recommend it more highly. A perfect weekend away.

Our stay at the Nest was utterly magical. Nick and Ryan have thought of everything - we literally couldn't think of anything that wasn't just right. Really special, very comfortable and truly peaceful. The tent is just gorgeous, beautifully made and furnished with incredible detail, comfortable, spacious, warm and sturdy even in a storm. The woodland kitchen is a triumph! Everything you could possibly need, in the most wonderful space. And the setting is also lovely - a real feeling of peace and quiet, being in the middle of nowhere, big open spaces, very private etc, while simultaneously being a couple hundred metres from showers, chargers, wifi, etc. It's the sort of place you can't bear to leave. Thanks Nick and Ryan!

We had a great stay despite heavy rain! Nicky and Ryan were very welcoming and they had thought of everything that we might need. The bed was extremely comfortable and the log burner was easy to light and soon warmed up the nest. Unfortunately, we did not manage to take advantage of the outside fire due to the weather. The outdoor kitchen was very well equipped and under cover so we were able to cook outside. The furnishing was unique, quirky and very comfortable. The owners kindly supplied us with ginger cake, gorgeous eggs and clotted cream. The showers in the main building were excellent.

My boyfriend and I had the most fantastic long weekend at the Nest at Leewood. From our arrival (and lift from the nearest shops) we were made to feel completely at home. The complimentary home made cake and cream was delicious, and the Nest was so cosy and welcoming we immediately relaxed. Its the perfect place for a romantic, peaceful weekend away- even when the weather isn't perfect the Nest is a spacious and luxurious place to curl up and read/play cards/nap. I couldn't fault our stay, from start to finish. Nick and Ryan are fantastic hosts, even after we left they returned to pick up my phone for me when I managed to forget it!

My girlfriend and I had a lovely long weekend at the Nest. Nick and Ryan had thought of everything to make it feel at home and I couldn't recomend it more if you're wanting a break away from day to day life as its secluded location is perfect!! All cooking and cleaning items where supplied so there was no need to take anything. Nick really couldn't do enough to make sure your stay was perfect; we would love to return again in the future!!

I booked Nest as a surprise 30th birthday present for my partner.... What a find, we loved it!! Nik and Ryan are wonderful hosts, the care and attention they have put into Nest is remarkable. Nest has everything you need for a very comfortable stay.... A really comfy bed with big fluffy pillows, a very well stocked kitchen full with utensils and plenty of firewood the keep both the log burner and fire pit burning! The showers were very clean and always had hot water. The boot room held lots of useful things like backpacks, hairdryer, wellies, phone charger, torches... Things you're likely to forget! The honesty shop held a small amount of food items. There were bread machines you could use to bake some fresh loaves.... What a great idea! The local area is stunning, plenty of walks and some lovely little villages in close proximity. We visited the London Inn, it serves a great Sunday Dinner and outdoor seating next to the river.... Very pretty! Its the extra little details that make this place so special such as freshly baked cake on arrival, eggs in the kitchen, friendly hosts..... Amazing! We can't wait to visit again :) Oh and we caught fish!! Lots of fish!!

"We stayed at The Nest at the end of October.  Our hosts (Nick and Ryan) were so nice and really accommodating without being imposing at all. The accommodation itself is amazing (esp. decor and log burner!) and has everything you will need and the surroundings are lovely - there is a stream, woods to explore and we were only a leisurely walk form the Moors.  Perfect place to unwind, we absolutely loved it.  Highly recommended."

"Absolutely loved it! Really liked being able to look out through the doors when lying in bed - we have only ever stayed in yurts, which can feel rather enclosed. We had everything we needed and the extra detail in the separate kitchen was great."

"We had a great time. Good mixture of comfort and proper camping. It was our babies' first camping trip and the whole family enjoyed it. The hosts were friendly and offered information without being intrusive into the weekend. Weather was good. Kitchen well equipped."

"We enjoy our stay very much. Lovely interior and friendly welcome."

"It was amazing. Beautiful and relaxing. The beautiful surroundings and the obvious care and love that the hosts put into creating the perfect place to stay."

"Had a wonderful time. Loved the location, the Nest itself was great and the privacy."

"Absolutely amazing. Exceeded my expectations. Everything was perfect, everything we needed was there (and more!). The woodburner kept us toasty at bedtime, the kitchen was delightful, the hosts were fabulous - there if you needed them but we were able to be as isolated as we liked. It was the most relaxing weekend break I've ever had."

"Was amazing, could not recommend it more highly. Was just magical and even better than the pictures."

"I can't even say how much more the Nest exceeded my expectations. Nick has made sure that every aspect of the Nest and it's surrounding area are all immaculate and just perfect in their design. You feel like a mix between Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, it's just amazing! We cooked on the fire every night and even when it rained it made cuddling up inside the Nest even more inviting. You have so much open space arounds you so if you are looking for a weekend away from it all I couldn't recommend it enough. I actually can't wait to go back again! Best thing, just being at the Nest. You immediately forget the worries of the world when you step into the Nest, light your fire and sit back with a nice glass of wine. I don't think I have felt more relaxed in a really long time. Nick is lovely and the rest of the grounds are lovely. Walking along the river is also very calming. I couldn't fault our stay one little bit."

"We had a marvellous time in 'The Nest' . Our hosts were fabulous and there are no words to describe the beautiful spot in which we camped. It really is beautiful. So peaceful and picturesque. The Nest is wonderful - magical. We will definately return to this place."

Meet your hosts

Nick has been at Leewood her entire life, spending what she calls "a happily feral childhood" making the most of of the land around her: building dens, making rafts, looking after the livestock... She now works as an artist, drawing on these experiences of her upbringing and childhood passions, which she has now converted into spaces and opportunities that allow others to feel as calm, relaxed and connected to the natural world as she does.

Wildlife & Environment

Leewood lies towards the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park, on the south facing slopes of the Walkham Valley. With conservation grazing and only natural fertilisers, Leewood maintains a rich biodiversity, and the mature pasture and ancient woodland offer a wonderful haven for wildlife.  Depending when in the year you visit, you may get to see spotted orchids, ragged robin and kingfishers or baby buzzards taking their first flight. The tent is completely off-grid, letting you forget all the cares of modern living and fully immerse yourself in your natural surroundings.

The nearest train station is Plymouth, 11 miles away. The nearest bus top is at Horrabridge, 2 miles away. It is possible to walk from here, or pick ups can be arranged at an additional charge.

By car

From Yelverton take the B3212 towards Princetown. After 0.3 miles turn left onto Walkhampton Road. Go through Walkhampton, past the pub and school, and the lane will descend to very narrow bridge. Continue over the bridge, and then turn left immediately. Follow the drive down and you can park just before the yard. This is 100m from the tent.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.

Please note that except by prior arrangement confirmed in writing, only the number of persons specified on a booking confirmation may occupy  a property. Most owners reserve the right to refuse admittance or revoke a booking if this condition is not observed and you are unlikely to receive any refund.

15. Your Responsibilities

Please note that you have a contract with the Owner of the property. As such you are under a responsibility to behave in a proper, appropriate and legal manner whilst staying at the property with due respect to the Owner, the Property and other guests and their property. You are responsible for informing the Owner of any losses or damage to the property as soon as possible. Please note that you will be liable to pay the Owner for any losses or damage to the property caused by you or a member of your party (except reasonable wear and tear). Some Owners will also require damage deposits. You must also leave the property by the check-out time specified on your booking. If any guest behaves inappropriately or improperly (of which the Owner will be the final judge on their Property), or illegally, the Owner reserves the right to ask the guest and their party (at their discretion) to leave the Property before the end of the holiday period and/or refuse any future bookings from you.  Any refund for so doing will be at the entire discretion of the Owner. In addition, the Owner reserves the right to sue the guest for any loss, damage or injury caused to the Owner, the Property or to other guests and/or their property. As agent, we will have no liability to you in these circumstances.

17. Discrepancies

In case of a discrepancy between these Agency Terms & Conditions and any other Canopy & Stars literature, these Agency Terms & Conditions shall prevail.

18. Validity clause
