Heather Hut - Shepherd's hut in Northumberland, United Kingdom

Last cache: 20:48:56, Friday 20 April 2018

Hesleyside Huts

Suitable for children aged up to 5

Not suitable for pets

Children welcome. Sorry no pets.

See the Milky Way from one of two modern and stylish shepherd's huts sharing an oak copse in the Northumberland Dark Sky Reserve

Set in an oak copse a couple of minutes’ walk from the main house, the two shepherd's huts at Hesleyside Hall are Anna and William’s latest project in their regeneration of the family estate. The surrounding parkland was landscaped by the well-known Georgian landscape architect Capability Brown, and the huts’ stylishly rustic exteriors look right at home in their rural environment. They are traditionally handcrafted from reclaimed oak and insulated with sheep’s wool, while the interiors are pure modern luxury; light and airy, with electricity, LED downlights as well as atmospheric hurricane lamps.

In Heather Hut, your king-size bed is in a cosy enclosed area at one end of the hut, with a fold down bunk that makes for a fun child’s bed. The table folds down too, making the living area as spacious as possible. There’s a private shower, compost loo and wood burning stove for both cooking and keeping you cosy, although you’ll probably want to spend a good part of your evenings sitting out by the campfire and stargazing – have a look in the drawer under the bed for a telescope and some helpful guides.

You’re welcome to follow private walks around the grounds (please stick to the trails!), and if that whets your appetite for more stately homes and gardens, Northumberland has plenty more! Or for more adventurous pursuits, Kielder Water & Forest Park is just down the road and offers a whole range of outdoor activities.

Our guests say...

Arriving down the avenue of trees and turning the key in Heather Hut was exciting! It felt secluded and cosy. Our second night brought clear skies so we followed the advice and took the telescope and our camera equipment up the road opposite the farm, enjoyed the wide, starry skies, captured a shooting star and tried to ignore the toe-numbing cold. Back at the hut, we got the fire pit going and set up the equipment for more star gazing. Perfectly blissful. We welcomed the freedom to walk in the grounds of the hall but most of all, we enjoyed being able to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

We really enjoyed the experience of staying in the shepherds hut. It was a lovely location.

Excellent break away from the hustle n bustle. Superb hosts who left us to our own devices and made sure all the comforts were ready and available.

Heather hut more than met our expectations; we really appreciated our host's attention to detail. Everything inside the hut was perfect, from the sweet little hobbit stove to the wonderfully comfortable bed with feather and down duvet. Opening our windows at sunrise we were treated to stunning views and walking in the grounds was a delight. Anna and William were perfect hosts; there when you needed them but otherwise unobtrusive. We've had a wonderful, snug, weekend in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

Fabulous stay looking to stay again. The hut lovely with everything required couldn't ask for more.

we arrived at Heather Hut after a few wrong turns ! What an idyllic setting ! Despite the drizzly weather. We were very excited to be here after a 6 hour drive .We were delighted to find our caravan had such a lovely feel to it and all the amenities that you needed. Such a cute little kitchen ;great accessories and very well planned layout. The shower was fab, lovely and hot and powerful too !It was too wet to have a fire outside and despite it not being that cold we got our little log burner going to add to the ambience of it all . We absolutely loved it ! If I lived closer I would be booking another trip to one of the huts (I live in NZ)

We had 2 nights with a toddler at Heather Hut and had perfect weather and a lovely time, in a beautiful location. The hut was set up with everything we needed, it was set up with a clever use of space, with room to store your own belongings as well. A perfect introduction to camping for a toddler, with lots of home comforts.

Very peaceful time sitting and chatting in the hut and around an open fire outside. Trips to the Kielder observatory, walking in various locations including near Chillingham castle (and visiting it - very entertaining). Walk by Bamburgh castle. Heating up food on the wood burner in the hut & then opening all the windows to cool down ! Generally, a lovely time.

It was fantastic. What a beautiful place to stay in, lovely green fields and woodlands. We stayed in Heather- it has a lovely cosy, retro atmosphere and we could not have been made more welcome. Retro kids sweets and lemon cake- what a treat. We enjoyed staying in something unique. Its not a huge hut, but it had all the essentials and getting the fire going either in the firepit or on the hot stove was good fun. We also enjoyed a tour by the owners William and Anna, who were very friendly, knowledge and had good humour. The proximity to Hadrians Wall, Kielder Forest an historic market towns such as Hexham meant that we could choose between a chilled out walk around the grounds or head out and explore the local area. Sadly it was too cloudy to see the stars during our stay, but we have decided to come back and stay in one of the huts next year as we enjoyed so much!

It was our first time with Canopy & stars. Heather hut was everything we hoped that it might be.

A wonderfully peaceful few days pretending I was in Danny the Champion of the World! Cosy is an understatement - once we'd got the fire going at least! One clear night offered some great views of the stars. A beautiful area to take a short break in.

Fantastic stay. Would love to go back and explore the grounds that the huts were situated in. The accommodation was beautiful and very cosy. Really enjoyed seeing the dark skies. Everything was perfect even down to the little details of lemon drizzle cake and towels fastened with string. Beautiful little personal touches which made my break perfect. Just wish I'd had more time to enjoy the grounds.

"In a word - gorgeous. Better than any hotel room. The shepherds hut was cosy, comfortable and so homely. The attention to detail was excellent from the soft furnishings, luxurious down duvet and pillows, to the crockery, playing cards and marshmallows to toast on the fire. Not to mention the tasty lemon drizzle cake and bag of retro sweets that were left for us. We ordered the breakfast basket which arrived at 9am on the Saturday morning and the bread and croissants were still warm! We will definitely go back again. Loved every minute"

We stayed on a rainy week and absolutely fell in love with the hut. Beautifully appointed with lots of charm and an incredibly comfy kingsize bed! Our six year old was enchanted by the drop down bunk but insisted on sharing our bed with us two nights (I guess we raved about it too much). Despite the rain, we managed walks into the woods and surrounding fields, went to see the pigs and played in the huts private field. Our son enjoyed the shower and played with his Ben 10 toys in there for ages! We took simple meals for the week and had no problem preparing or cooking on either the log burner or the camping stove. Would have barbecued if the rain had held off!We ordered the welcome basket for our arrival which was lovely. I have to admit that much as I love my son, I had daydreams of returning for a short "honeymoon" kind of break to enjoy the snug little hut in peace! One day...

"This was the perfect break away from everything.  On arrival, the shepherd's hut was lit up, warm and we found cake left in the basket on the table.  The scent in the air was lovely.  Inside we found the wood burning stove, a massive bed and a light airy décor.  The interior was compact but well thought out. We did absolutely nothing except sit in sun chairs on the grass outside, soaking up the rays, read, or go hunting for kindling.  We have been to many places abroad and can say that this " back to nature" holiday was the best fun we have had."

"Excellent quality of the huts - convenient yet remote location - beautiful surroundings.  Every little detail thought of. Given the standards of the huts and the equipment provided it was really good value."

"We had a wonderful time. The location and facilities were fantastic and we really loved the attention to detail. (Lovely freshly baked lemon cake on arrival and even had marshmallows left forus so we could toast them on the campfire)."

"I wanted (and needed) tranquility, and it got just that. The 'hut' was very well outfitted, and designed to context. Comfy bed and decor was best. The worst was loo - I'm still a softy townie when it comes to plumbing."

"Had a wonderful time! All v easy. Nice that there were only two huts. Felt v private. Lovely owners. Beautiful location"

"We really enjoyed our stay, the setting was idyllic, and the hut was wonderful."

At Hesleyside

Star-gazing - Hesleyside is within the gold tier Northumberland Dark Sky reserve. A complete star-gazing kit is available so that you can take full advantage of this rare opportunity to witness the night sky without light pollution.

Fishing - The most popular “sport” in Britain is also the most relaxing! Rent a rod on the well regarded Hesleyside Beat (max 3 rods), Hesleyside Huts makes a perfect fisherman’s lodge during the fishing season (Aug-Oct).

Walks - make use of a number of private walks, many in ancient woodlands, which are only available to guests at Hesleyside.

Places to Visit

Hadrian’s Wall - No visit to this area would be complete without a trip to Hadrian’s Wall. As Hesleyside is within savage territory you’ll need to travel a short distance south. The drive to Vindolanda itself is stunning.

Gardens - If you are a lover of gardens and grand stately homes, then Northumberland has plenty to offer. You might have heard of The Alnwick Garden, reputedly the finest contemporary garden in the UK, but other equally delightful gardens can be found at Howick Gardens & Arboretum and Cragside Estate to name but a few.

Northumberland Coast - It’s a good drive but one with near constant views to the horizon and where you are unlikely to see another car. The Northumberland Coast offers stunning & deserted beaches, ruined castles, rocky islands and wonderful fish. Highly recommended for those here for a longer stay.

Kielder Observatory - You’ll be able to see the Milky way from your hut but if you fancy viewing the rings of Saturn why on visit the famous Kielder Observatory which is only 20 mins drive away.

Outdoor & Active

Kielder Water and Forest Park -  The largest man-made dam in western Europe is filled with hidden works of art, walks and experiences (the Charlton family love the Kielder Birds of Prey Centre) but the real reason people are flocking to Kielder is the adventure.

Adventure - Off-road mountain bike trails, sailing, water-skiing, the Calvert Trust Adventure Centre and kayaking are among the options for those looking for a bit more of an adrenaline rush during their stay at Hesleyside. Explore the area on horse or try your hand at Go Ape at Matfen.

Cycling - The lack of traffic and breath-taking new view around each bend has meant makes Northumberland a great place to explore on 2 wheels! Anna and William can arrange bike hire if required or suggest routes from 9 – 90 miles.

Food & Drink

At Hesleyside

Hesley huts3-108

The basics for a welcoming cuppa will all be provided in your hut. Get in touch with Anna and William if you'd like to order a breakfast basket - it'll include a selection of local sausages, bacon, eggs, marmalade and croissants. £20 for a basket for 2 adults and £5 extra for each child.

For special occasions you might also like to order a champagne bucket too...

The nearest shop for supplies is in Bellingham, 20 minutes' by foot or a short drive away.

Pubs & Restaurants

The Pheasant at Falstone -  Cosy and friendly country pub with good food and on the way to Kielder

The Holly Bush at Greenhaugh -  An old Drovers Inn and tiny little friendly pub

The Barrasford Arms, Barrasford  Good Country Pub with lovely restaurant and pub food using local ingredients

The Battlesteads at Wark -  A warm welcome and some very good food

A little further afield...

The Rat at Anick - the Northumberland Foodie's favourite

Bouchon in Hexham -  an award-wining French bistro; small, friendly and delicous

Meet your hosts

Now the home of William and Anna Charlton and their young children, the historic Hesleyside Hall has been continuously inhabited by the Border Reiver Charlton family in an unbroken line, since 1346 and the reign of Richard the Lionheart. It is

Hesleyside website, 115

a magnificent historic house set within grounds landscaped by Capability Brown and located in the heart of the Northumberland National Park.

Wildlife & Environment

The Hesleyside Huts are set in 4000 acres of land, including SSSI woodland with ancient oaks, with red squirrels, roe deer, hawks and owls

Getting there

Hesleyside, Bellingham, Hexham, Northumberland, NE48 2LA

By public transport

The nearest station is Hexham, about 20 minutes' drive away. There is a bus stop in Bellingham, which is 15 minutes' walk from Hesleyside.

By car

Hesleyside is 1.5 miles west of Bellingham on the south side of the North Tyne river.

From the A69 (1 mile south of where it joins the A696) take the B6320 west to Bellingham. Drive through Bellingham on the B6320 and 200yds after crossing the North Tyne river, turn first right which has a roadside advertising sign for Kielder Organic Meats. Follow the road lined by trees, and Hesleyside Hall will be on the left after 1.5 miles. If you're travelling north on the B6320 from Hexham, or Carlisle via Wark, then take the left (with the Kielder Organic Meats sign) 200yds before bridge.

From the B6320 (by the Kielder Organic Meats sign) it is 1.1 miles to your own private drive. The access to this drive is on the steep “Spring Bank”. You will see a green “Hesleyside Huts” sign on a pair of wooden gates.  Please be careful and close all gates behind you.

Park at the end of the huts' tree lined avenue (not on the grass please!). There is a turning circle there. Please park so that another car can pass.

You can use the wheelbarrow provided to cart your luggage to your hut.

You might want to bring a torch if you're arriving late!

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
