Food & Drink

At L'Olivette:

There's a simple kitchen to cook your own meals. There will be olives, organic rose and some sparkling water in the fridge and a few more bits and bobs that you can use and replace for the next guests.  You can help yourself to the edibles growing on the land.

Local shops:

The nearest shop and boulangerie are 2 km away and there are daily markets in Grasse (3 km) for fresh fruit and veg.

The local shop has everything and a delicatessen offers take away food.

Bars & Restaurants:

There’s a wonderful selection of cafés and restaurants a short distance away.

We leave suggestions in the cabin, and the visitors’ book is often very resourceful too.

Meet your hosts

Meet Jane & Jean-Patrice Oulmont:

The Oulmonts live between Toulouse and the Pyrenees. They have four grown up children – two daughters and two sons – and four grandchildren (with another on the way)! Jane is a retired nurse and her husband Jean Patrice works as a full-time sculptor. They enjoy the outdoors, travelling, gardening, walking in the mountains, and chilling-out with friends and family.

They built L'Olivette themselves about 30 years ago using recycled materials. It was built to provide simple accommodation for work experience apprentices who came from all corners of the world and for many artists and painters. The Oulmonts now use it when they come back to harvest the olives which they press into oil. Odile is a close friend of the family who will meet and greet you. She is a very friendly and caring host, lives just 15 minutes away and has lived in the area all her life. If you arrive late and she can't be there to meet you, she will pop round the next morning.

Jane's story:

Jean Patrice's parents moved to Domaine de Cantegril in 1946. This is a beautiful old Provencal house which is near to L’Olivette on Chemin de St Jean. They had 8 children; Jean Patrice (my husband) is number 4, born 1953. The parents were kept busy with their children and their small-holding, growing organic (in those days very avant-garde!) fruit and vegetables. Jean Patrice eventually took over the farm. I arrived in 1976.  Having finished my nurse’s training in London, I took a job in a small Anglo-American hospital in Cannes. I met the Oulmont family while working there, and asked if I could work for a year on their farm as a student.  This I did, and ended up staying!

With some friends, we started up an organic Cooperative, selling organic whole food, and of course all our own produce (fruit, vegetables, eggs, honey etc.)  It was incredibly popular, for its atmosphere and unbeatable prices (it was a non profit-making organisation). People came from all over the region.  It was an utopic enterprise, where the quality of life and of the environment shared equal importance. In 1989, as our family expanded, we decided to change direction and we moved to the other side of France, to the foothills of the Pyrenees. Jean Patrice was then able to work full time at his other passion, sculpture, and is now an established artist.

Following this, the bulk of the Domaine was divided between three of the Oulmont children.  When selling our old property, we kept the chalet and one hectare of land. The land above is owned by the family who bought our house when we moved.  The land to either side of the chalet belongs to my brother-in-law on one side, and my sister-in-law on the other. In 2000, we planted 100 olive trees. We go two or three times a year to tend to them, and they are today all well and strong and producing lots of olives! We pick them in November or December, and take them to a local olive mill to make into oil. We also keep some olives in brine for eating.  So the chalet is really a home from home for us. When we stay there, it always brings back fond memories. In a busy overcrowded part of France, L’Olivette and its surroundings are like a little oasis.

Wildlife & Environment:

There are plenty of birds and butterflies, and rare fireflies can be spotted in June. Shy lizards and geckos are regular visitors. In true Provence style, you can hear the sounds of crickets and cicadas singing through the warm months and Nightingales in May.

L'Olivette sits in its own grounds of over two acres of olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, wild flowers and fruit trees that the guests are free to pick. The olive trees provide gentle shade from the strong Mediterranean sun and the sea can be seen, twinkling in the distance. The atmosphere is magical with the sounds of cicadas and the Mediterranean fragrances. The setting is ever changing and stunning throughout the seasons with a warm climate until late autumn months. Adjacent to the property is a plantation of organic damask and Provence roses.

Getting there

95 chemin de Blumenthal, 06130 GRASSE, France

The nearest airport is Cote d'Azur in Nice.

Parking is 100m from the cabin.

Odile likes to welcome you and show you around on your arrival. This can either be at the pre-arranged time of 4pm or 6pm.  However, if neither of these times is possible, don’t worry, there is a safebox for the keys at the gate and you can let yourselves in. Odile will come round to see you the following morning at 10am unless you ask her not to.

1) From autoroute A8, take exit to Cannes. At the roundabout immediately after the exit, take direction GRASSE D6185. Follow this to the very end.

2) At the first roundabout (with a still /distiller in the middle) take direction GRASSE.

3) At the next roundabout with a fountain called "les Quatre Chemins " with a McDonalds on the left, take the 4th exit "Grasse est" (the exit just before Macdonalds).

4) At the  next roundabout (with a sculpture) take 2nd exit. "Lycée A. Toqueville ".

5) At the next roundabout, (having passed E. leclerc on your right) take 2nd exit (straight on) then first right.

6) At the next roundabout with a watermill "moulin de Brun", take 3rd exit direction Le Rouret.

7) At the junction which is immediately after going under a bridge, turn left and then immediately right, quarter St Jean. Keep on this road, bearing left at a T junction. Chemin de Blumenthal. L'Olivette is on the left, about 350 metres further, almost opposite the number 94.

When you arrive in front of the gates, please send Odile a text message and she will come to open the gates. If you get lost at any stage, text Odile at once and she will come to meet you! It should take about 15 minutes from the autoroute.

If flying to Nice airport and hiring a car, the journey is between 45 minutes and 75 minutes depending on traffic conditions. If you have been delayed and cannot arrive at L’Olivette on time, please send a text message to Odile.

If you are letting yourselves in without Odile, please read the following:

Once inside the gates, the track curves round to the right and then divides.  Turn to your left and follow the track up to a small one-storied white building with green shutters. You can park the car anywhere around here. From here, follow the grass path up the hill and you will see L’Olivette on your right.  At night time, there are a few solar lights to guide you.

The entrance is shared with the neighbour and therefore the gates need to be kept locked at all times. Thank you.

Booking Terms

Canopy & Stars low price promise
Book with us in confidence knowing you won’t find that place cheaper elsewhere. All of the prices we display are set and matched by our Owners. (In this world of foreign currency, we do have to say 'subject to exchange rates' for some of our European places.)

What does ‘from price’ mean?
Our ‘from price’ is based on a four night stay in low season and designed to help you to compare different prices across our collection. Some of our Owners vary their nightly rates and check in days throughout the year, so it may differ from the rate quoted below the calendar. It is quite common (although by no means universal) for places to charge a little more in peak season or for shorter stays, to cover changeover costs. Consider booking longer stays during the cooler months if you’re looking for the lowest nightly rates.
