Lochhouses - Tyninghame, Scotland
Family glamping at the beach in one of six luxury safari tents
If you've ever dreamt of walking straight off the beach into your living room, Lochhouses, just an hour from Edinburgh, is for you. Lochhouses is owned and run by the Laird and Lady Laird of Lochhouses and Newbyth, Robert and Michele Dale and has been in Robert’s family since 1892 prior to which it was part of the Earl of Haddington’s majestic Tyninghame Estate. Over the dunes from the seven beautiful safari tents, lie the long white sands of Lochhouses beach. As the name suggests, it's pretty private, making it perfect for walking the dog, lazing for the day or taking a trot in the surf courtesy of Lochhouses' own horses or the child-friendly ponies from the next-door farm. Inland lie miles of walking and cycling trails, wetlands, lochs and award-winning wildlife habitats. As well as the wealth of wildlife in the surrounding countryside, the farm itself is home to lop-eared rabbits, hens, sheep and ducks, and you're more than welcome to muck in.
Despite its blissfully rural location, the nearest shop is really close by - an old boat on the beach converted into the farm store. You can pick up duck, pheasant and venison, as well as crab and lobster with only a few 'food yards' of travel behind them. Depending on the season, you'll find a great range of vegetables including Robert & Michele's prize-winning potatoes and blackberries and wild raspberries grow all through the woods and in the hedgerows, so you can stroll out for dessert. You can also hire an outdoor cooking pot and firepit if you want to experience outdoor cooking but all tents have lovely log burning stove with ovens inside.
The seven luxury tents at Lochhouses are all fully equipped and sleep four or six to eight people. They're a perfect place to bring the family for a glamping holiday that can be anything you want from helping out on the farm to lying on the beach.
Stabling is available, please give as much notice as possible. Kids of all ages are welcome.
