Karlotta - Roulotte Retreat, Scottish Borders

Sleeps 2: 1 double. Sorry, Karlotta is not suitable for children or pets, however they are both welcome in the cottage

Karlotta is Avril and Alan's second roulotte and the decor is a bold and successful combination of art deco and Celtic knotwork designs with horses and flowers. Its colours are Moroccan-influenced: rich purples, reds and golds. An elegant chaise longue graces the salon so that you can relax in style. Oriental hand-woven rugs soften wooden floors. The living area includes a small kitchen – perfect for cooking a tagine of wild venison or locally foraged wild mushrooms (or something else suitably Scottish-Moroccan fusion). In the bedroom there's an original-style roulotte bed with cupboards below; a few steps away is a modern stainless steel shower room with separate loo and basin. Karlotta is quite unlike any Gyspy caravan you've seen before!
Roulotte Retreat is a fascinating place to stay and Avril and Alan's creativity and warmth are apparent everywhere. But this isn't just a place where you can feel, and be, pampered; it's also a place where you can explore the charming Scottish Borders. A place where you can simply relax, chat with other guests around the campfire – or not – as you please.

Sloe gin weekend – 29-30th October: Explore the nearby woodlands for sloe berries, then enjoy the creative process of making sloe gin! Take a couple of bottles away with you for bringing in the New Year

Our guests say...

“Many thanks to both Avril and Alan for their wonderful friendly welcome. You very much made us feel part of the Roulotte Retreat ‘family’. Your extensive knowledge of your local area was very helpful giving us lots of top tips on places to go and see (and eat!). Karlotta was beautiful and a real novel experience, made all the more special by the little details, brass ducks on curtain rails, Moroccan tea pot, quirky crockery, and authentic items of furniture. Perfect relaxation, and something different to tell family and friends about once home… Thank you so much, we hope to see you again!”

We particularly enjoyed our stroll over to Melrose along the St Cuthberts Way, for lunch and bottle of wine at Marmions, followed by a game of spot the pig at the Abbey (which I am pleased to say I won!) Karlotta was beautiful and a real novel experience, made all the more special by the little details

"There were a hundred best things...jumping in the pond, finding Easter eggs outside the door, the cosiness of the wood burning stove, the beautiful decor, the comfiest bed, the walks, the incredible book shop in St Boswells, and inspiring chats with lovely Avril"
