Swallowtail Hill - Rye, East Sussex
A wildlife paradise less than two hours from London
Swallowtail Hill Farm is an almost unbelievable haven for wildlife of all sorts. The results of the years of dedication that Sarah and Christopher Broadbent have put into encouraging and maintaining the biodiversity of their forty acres are visible and audible everywhere. Butterflies, birds, bees, bats, barn owls and a wealth of wildlife not beginning with B abound in meadow, pond, stream, and woodland. There are even some tame ones up at the farm. The scenery is as varied as its inhabitants, with undulating hills, coppice woodland and wildflower meadows. The coast at Camber is only nine miles away, so you can even have a day trip to the beach. Back at Swallowtail though, there is plenty to keep you busy. Stoke up the campfire for breakfast before taking the kids to feed the farm animals or even, in keeping with the timeless feel of the place, learning a little longbow archery.
Two five metre bell tents are set on decks in the Beckley Bowl, almost a natural amphitheatre. They are furnished with the finest in local and sustainable craftwork and both sleep four in one double and two single beds, have private fire-pits and share the same washing and toilet set up. The Meadowkeeper's Cottage is off in its own area by a large pond and between two wildflower meadows. It's just like an old country cottage, but on wheels! The Woodcutter's cottage is similar, but set at the end of the chestnut and oak filled Dean Wood. Both have private loo and log-fired shower facilities.
Whatever you do at Swallowtail Hill Farm, your genial hosts will make sure you enjoy the magnificent countryside and all it has to offer. They can arrange food packages from local farmers and growers and help your stay in this pastoral paradise be as relaxing or as energetic as you want it to be.
Sorry, pets are not allowed at Swallowtail Hill Farm. Kids of all ages are welcome.
