The Wild 100: Wild flavour

The best food is about more than flavour. It captures a time and a setting perfectly. From restaurants with a taste of history to some extremely local gin, these foodie experiences will linger on the tongue and in the memory.

Wild flavour is only one type of experience that features in The Wild 100, our selection of the incredible things that come with our stays. You can see the full 100 here, or sign up to our newsletter and have them sent to you in inspiring episodes over the next few weeks.

The Poppy Treehouse, Hampshire

61. Truffle hunting and wine tasting

Seasonal or evergreen? At The Poppy Treehouse, you don’t have to choose. Spend a lavish weekend lazing about in scandi-design. In winter, go truffle hunting. Staying in the other seasons? Then settle for the year-round wine tasting – quel dommage.

Inshriach Loghouse, Scotland

62. Very local gin

Inshriach estate, a beautiful slice of highland wilderness, is one of the last strongholds of Scottish Juniper. Owner Walter celebrates this fact by creating his own gin. If there's an open day on, wander up from your loghouse, tour the on-site distillery and maybe have a taster or two in the bar.

Trebus, Cornwall

63. The perfect picnic spot

You can’t beat the simple things. A cosy blanket, fine food, stellar views, and your chosen loved ones. Pick a wild spot, and perfect the art of picnic. Share a bottle, a giggle – and a memory for a lifetime. At nightfall, swap blanket for fireside, and crisp s’mores over licking flames.

Oriana, Herefordshire

64. Super cider me

Little Pomona is generally regarded as one of the UK’s best cideries - loved by top chefs and third-drinking hipsters. A visit to the tasting room and garden is a must for any visit to Herefordshire and our treehouse Oriana is just a short stumble up the track.

The Raft at Chigborough, Essex

65. Catch your own fish

Sure, you’ve had freshly caught fish at a restaurant. But how fresh is fresh? That day? That morning? How about within minutes. At The Raft at Chigborough, you can fish for trout for dinner, and have quite possibly, the freshest fish of your life. Just subtract water.

Uplands Treehouse, Bristol

66. Stars next door

At Uplands, you're five minutes away from The Ethicurean, if you manage to escape the pull of treetop serenity, you can be busy in a tasting menu sourced from the wild of the Mendips. The Ethicurean is a Michelin Green Star winner, celebrated for their eco sourcing.

The Black Shed, Isle of Skye

67. Argentina X Scotland?

Argentinian food is history, on a plate. Mediterranean influence that hopped across the pond and met gaucho culture. At Black Shed, you’re round the corner from Dunvegan, an Argentinian restaurant on the isle of Skye – where Argentinian food hopped back across the pond again.

Squirrels Nest Treehouse, Forest of Dean

68. Island BBQ hut

If you’re not cooking pizzas in the wood fired stone oven, or keeping an eye out for the wild boar that roam the forest, you’ll be relaxing in the stunning Scandi-design of the treehouse. But the real magic, is found over the wooden bridge, in the island BBQ hut. Yes, island BBQ hut.

Little Poro, Devon

69. Apple pressing

The cool woodland kitchen and pizza oven will make you desperate to get some local produce and start cooking, but if you visit in autumn, it's your glass, not your plate, that'll see your finest work. When the harvest is in, you can learn to press apples, making the finest, freshest juice you'll ever taste.
